When To Go Thailand's monsoons arrive around July and last into November (the 'rainy season') and can be quite uncomfortable to deal with. This is followed by a dry, cool period from November to mid-February, followed by much higher relative temperatures from March to June. By far the best time to visit is from February to March when the weather is kind and the beaches are at their finest. The peak seasons are August, November,December, February and March, with secondarypeak months in January and July.If your main objective is to avoid crowdsand to take advantage of discounted roomsand low-season rates, you should considertravelling during the least crowded months(April, May, June, September and October).On the other hand it's not difficult to leavethe crowds behind, even during peak months,if you simply avoid some of the most populardestinations (eg, Chiang Mai and all islandsand beaches). Tsunami/Conflict in Southern Thailand Thailand's Andaman coast suffered damage and loss of life in the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004. The southern provinces of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and Songkhla should to be avoided due to indiscriminate bombing by suspected Muslim militants. Factoid Love your Ghosts Many Thai houses or buildings have spirit houses, which are places for the spirits ofthe site to live in. Without this vital structure you're likely to have the spirits living inthe house with you, which can cause all sorts of trouble. An average spirit house looks rather like abirdhouse-sized Thai temple mounted on a pedestal. A big hotel may have a shrine covering 100 sq m (1076 sq ft) or more.How do you ensure that the spirits take up residence in your spirit house rather than in the mainhouse with you? Mainly by making the spirit house a more auspicious place to live in than the mainbuilding, through daily offerings of food, flowers, candles and incense. The spirit house should alsohave a prominent location and should not be shaded by the main house. Thus its position has to beplanned from the very beginning and the house installed with due ceremony. If your own house isimproved or enlarged, the spirit house should be as well. Beaches, giant water falls in tropical rainforests, skiing in the Andes, horseriding on the Pampas, or watching whales and penguins off the tip of Patagonia . All you need in Argentina is time. Iguaz National Park The area extends on both sides of the River Iguaz and its water falls between Brazil and Argentina. Derived from a Guaran word for great water, the name is Iguau in Portuguese-speaking Brazil. The falls are the centrepiece of the parks. Over 60 m high, the series of falls and cascades stretch for 4 km in the wet season. Visitors can view the base of the falls in Argentina, and the lip in Brazil . The Great Waters Rain Forest : This is the region of the great rivers, of the humid tropics, of the red earth and the magnificent jungle. A virgin jungle full of gigantic trees, and extraordinary flora and fauna. Great Waters, in the Guaran language Iguaz, which overflow with a roar in one of the wonders of the world, the Falls of Iguaz. Pampa Region The Pamas are the vast treeless plains of central Argentina that stretches from the Atlantic coast to the Andes Mountains. The humid Pampa, eastern portion, is one of the most fertile regions in the country. The dry Pampa is the area towards the Andes, a less populated region famous for its horses, and sheep. Home of the legendary gaucho, all the romantic fantasies about Argentina are concentrated here. The Andes The great mountain range of the Andes forms the spine of South America. Running almost parallel with the Pacific coast, the Andes stretch for more than 7,000 km -- that's 41/2 thousand miles, from Panama down towards Cape Horn. The highest mountain in the western hemisphere is in the Andes -- Argentina's Aconcagua (6,959 m). South America Touches the Sky : The North-western and the Cuyo are regions of high peaks -- here is the Aconcagua, stone sentinel - snow-capped volcanoes, plateaux, ravines and deserts. Under clear blue sky, small villages let the seasons pass by quietly, only interrupted by the carnivals, Indian markets and the worship of "Pachamama" or Mother Earth who provides maize and the pastures where the llamas and guanacos graze. Mount Aconcagua : The Aconcagua, in the province of Mendoza, is the highest mountain in the Americas. The passes through the Andes are at their highest, steepest, and narrowest in Peru . Arequipa to Puno (4,468 m); Lima to Tarma and Cerro de Pasco (4,804 m). Between Mendoza, Argentina, and Santiago, Chile , the Uspallata Pass, still reaches a staggering 3,900 m. Between Puerto Montt and Bariloche: Crossing the lakes and lower mountain passes of the southern Andes, with a condor flying overhead, beats looking up at hang-gliders in the Alps. The mountains of North Central America are an extension of the mountain system of Western North America while the ranges of South Central America are outliers of the Andes Mountains of South America. The middle portion of Central America is an active zone of volcanoes and earthquakes; it contains the Nicaragua Depression, which includes lakes Managua and Nicaragua. Tajumulco (4,210 m/13,846 feet), a volcano in Guatemala, is the region's highest peak. Central America's climate varies with altitude from tropical to cool. The eastern side of the region receives heavy rainfall. Bananas, coffee, and cacao are the chief crops of Central America, and gold and silver are mined there. The economies of the countries in the region are becoming increasingly diversified, although agriculture is still the largest employer.
