Hotel City Search : Republic of China Following most of Chinese mainland's occupation by Communist armies, General Chiang Kai-shek moved the Nationalist government of China's headquarters to T'ai-pei, on December 8, 1949. During the 1950s, the United States vowed to take military action against the Chinese mainland if Communist forces attacked Taiwan or the Pescadores. With extended financial and military aid from the US, during the early 1960s, Taiwan was able to build its economy. The mainlanders who had taken refuge in 1949 continued to dominate the political stage, but Taiwan was becoming isolated as countries sought to strengthen ties with the larger market in mainland China. Neither of the Chinese governments would have formal relations with any nation recognising the other. The Democratic Progressive party (DPP) continue to campaign for Taiwan's independence from mainland China, while Beijing threatens military action if this ever happens. The People's Republic of China claim Taiwan as one of its provinces and some native Taiwanese resent the claims. Posturing and flexing of navy muscle is not uncommon in the South China Sea . Language and Culture The official language of Taiwan is Mandarin, although other Chinese dialects are also spoken. The Taiwanese are mostly descendants of the Chinese who emigrated from Fujian and Guangdong provinces during the 18th and 19th centuries. The Taiwanese celebrate many ancient Chinese customs and holidays, especially the Dragon Boat Festival, the Mid-Autumn Festival, and the Feast of Lanterns. Taipei You can also call it T'ai-pei or Taibei; whatever, it's the provisional capital of the Republic of China, or Taiwan. Located on the Tanshui River, near the north coast of Taiwan, you will fly into T'aoyan International Airport. Immigrants from mainland China's Fujian Province first settled here in the 18th century, but not a lot was happening. The Japanese brought sushi to the island between 1895 and 1945, until they surrendered the island to China after World War II. Alexander's Taiwan Travel Page : Alex and Carrie have made a few trips to Taiwan. Here's the resulting travelogues; with photographs, recommended restaurants and related links. Taipei Sightseeing Among all the neon light, there are some Buddhist shrines of interest in the city. The Memorial Hall to Chiang Kai-Shek is a large white marble structure with an enormous blue-tiled roof, surrounded by an impressive garden. Museums : The National Palace Museum contains Chinese art treasures from the 2nd millennium BC to the 20th century, and the Hwa Kang Museum has displays of folk and modern Chinese art. T'ai-nan The Chinese pirate, Koxinga, made the city his capital due to its convenient position on the south-west of the island. It remained the capital of the island until 1885, when the government was transferred to T'ai-pei. Tulum Mexico Travel Information : TravelYucatan.com Tulum Mexico Travel Information Tulum Mayan Riviera Mexico TULUM MEXICO Tulum Mexico is the combination of a beach [coastline], archeological zone, and town. You could say that there are three distinct zones making up what people commonly refer to as Tulum. TULUM RUINS Tulum ruins are located 130 km south of Cancun. The "Tulum Archeological Zone" is the first distinct zone. You can't miss the ruins driving along Hwy 307 either in a rental vehicle or in a bus/collectivo. There are numerous signs and there is a big pink hotel on the corner. Tulum ruins are approximately 1 km down a road towards the coast. There is a large market there as well as a few fast food restaurants. Along the road towards the ruins on your immediate right is where the Mayan Pole Flyers do their pole flying. They perform throughout the day and you can sit and watch. Tulum ruins has one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. You can jump in the water at Tulum ruins and swim north to Boca Paila [we have done this]. TULUMS HOTELS For current Tulum hotel and resort information including rates, availability and secure on-line reservations please see: Tulum Hotels and Resorts Cancun Airport to Tulum Transfer Information TULUM PHOTOS Click on Image to Enlarge Restaurants Restaurant Main 307 Strip Mini Super Tulum Taqueria Maya at Ruins Ruins Beach North Ruins Beach South Tulum Ruins Beach TULUM BEACH Boca Paila has yet to be invaded by the all-inclusive resorts and remains as one of the last popular bastions of hedonistic culture in the Riviera. Along the beach you find inexpensive cabana's for rent [no reservation needed] and the odd drink stand/BBQ joint. Clothing is optional. Snorkeling along the coast here is not that good. Lots of sand and weeds. Tulum Beach can be accessed through a number of points. You can walk in via the road that takes you to the ruins. Just keep following the road south when it hits the ruins. This same road takes you to the Sian Kaan Biosphere and Punta Allen. You can access the beach by walking through an opening or access point from the road. There is also access at Tulum Pueblo. TULUM PUEBLO Tulum Pueblo is either a small city or a large town; it is hard to say. This is where many of the locals live who work in the nearby resorts and hotels. Many support workers such as bus drivers and construction workers live here as well. It is a diverse population with everything from computer programmers to dive instructors. You enter Tulum Pueblo on Hwy 307. Along the highway is the tourista zona and there is shop after shop selling everything and anything. Lots of tortilla stands, restaurants, pharmacies and other kinds of stores. There are dive shops, tour companies, car rental agencies but no bank or bank machine, go figure. The closest bank machine is at Hacienda Isabela [Bahia Principe Resort]. Off of the highway are residential streets with people living in houses and businesses. BUS INFORMATION There are two bus terminals in Tulum, one near the Pemex station, open to the public from 9: 00 to 18: 00 hrs. The other is located in town and is open 24hrs. Both provide first & second class bus service. The collectivo also stops in town on Hwy 307. You can take the collectivo from Tulum to Playa del Carmen for 15 pesos. TAXI There are 2 main taxi stands. Just look for the line up of taxis. Usually you do not have to look for a taxi as they are constantly driving by looking for fares. TOURIST INFORMATION / POLICE The Police station as well as the library, the Mayor's Office and the Tourist Information Office are located beside the baseball field. The Post Office is located on the main avenue [Hwy 307]. St. Gallen - Reasons to Visit Well preserved Medieval Old Town Side Trips to Lake Constance Ornate Oriel Windows Abbey Library of St.Gallen St. Gallen History St. Gallen was founded around 612 AD by a careless monk forging his way through the valley of the river Steinach. Yes, the good but clumsy St. Gallus fell into a briar patch, considered it a sign from God, and, legend has it, built a hermitage there with the help of a bear. The place became St. Gallen, and the bear is still found in the city's standard. From this prickly beginning, St. Gallen developed into a thriving cultural center by the 8th century, and today is Switzerland's seventh largest city. Getting to St. Gallen St. Gallen is an hour from Zurich by train. Trains leaving St. Gallen for Zurich also stop at the Zurich airport, which makes it a convenient place to stop in the last leg of a trip when you're flying out of Zurich. For those coming from Germany, St. Gallen is on the Munich-Zurich train line. For information on Driving routes to St. Gallen, see this page. Internet Access The Media Lounge at Katharinengasse 10 is open from 9 am to 9 pm Monday through Friday and when they feel like it on weekends. Hotels in St. Gallen Ok, here's a tip for you. If you like interesting, quirky hotels--boy, do we have one for you. The Hotel Am Ring on Unterer Graben 9, a short walk east from the train station, is crammed with antiques and curiosities throughout. Every one of them has a price tag. Plus, if you choose your room right, you'll see the outside world though a stained glass window. The bathroom fixtures are pretty interesting as well. See the pictures to see what we mean. Rooms 2, 6, and 10 have stained glass windows but face out to the street in front and can be noisy on weekends. A double at the Am Ring goes for a reasonable (for Switzerland) 130 Swiss Francs (CHF) with breakfast (including multicolored boiled eggs), about $90. See pictures of Interior of our room , or the ornate sink . For a splurge, try the Einstein Hotel, a grand old hotel housed in a former textile factory. Double rooms from 330 - 370 CHF. St Gallen’s youth hostel is at Jüchstrasse 25 (071/245 47 77, fax 245 49 83; a; open March to mid-Dec) – take the orange Trogenerbahn narrow-gauge train from outside the main station to the Schülerhaus stop and walk up the hill. Dorms are 24 CHF. You can make a reservation online here . Attractions - The Cathederal The present cathedral building was constructed by Peter Thumb between 1755-67. Restoration of the cathederal was done in 1961-1967, in the course of which Josef Wannemacher`s ceiling frescoes were discovered and restored. [see photo ] Opening hours Generally 9am - 6pm daily, except during church services Saturday: 8am - 9.15am and 11am - 5.30pm Sunday: 8am - 9.15am and 11am - 7.30pm Attractions - The Abbey Library is the world's oldest monastic library. The baroque interior filled with ancient tomes and old maps is an awe-inspiring sight, well worth the 7 frank admission fee. You'll have to put on fuzzy felt slippers to protect the floor that'll make you feel like clumsy monk Gallus, but it's all part of the fun. No photos are allowed.
