They started out at Firn Club, dedicating their efforts to leading volunteer youth groups on ecotours in the regions of Severobaikalsk and the Barguzinsky Reserve. Irkutsk Region Baikal-Discovery * Contact: Alexei Nikorof, Manager travel@baikal-discovery.com Alexei Nikiforov has been involved in tourism in Irkutsk for a long time, about twenty-five years, first as an Intourist guide, later connected with the Baikal Business Center, Green Express and now his own company. The company has long -term experience in operating eocotours connecting the regions of Mongolia, Buryatia and the Irkutsk region. Their itineraries are well researched and include unique encounters with the indigenous populations. Alexei is a tireless supporter of ecotours in this part of Russia. He writes a lot of articles about ecotourism development, speaks at conferences and educates other tour companies on following ecotourism principles in their own operations. Ivan Ivanov who oversees the operational aspects for the company has achieved one of Russia's highest accomplishments graduating from the Presidential Management course with honors. Both Alexei and Ivan are involved in the development of interesting program spanning all nearby regions. The company also offers an interesting program of winter activities and is always interested in new ecotourism ideas. They have cooperated with a number of travel companies from Europe and the US, including TCS Expeditions. Kamchatka Region Kamchatintour * www.kamchatintour.ru Contact: Irina Sedova, Director of Tourism inform@kamchatintour.ru Kamchatintour was one of the first companies after Perestroika that took the lead in catering to international travelers. They met the first expedition ship traveling from the Komandor Islands to Petropavlovsk. They also developed the first business partnership with Japan now generating about four to five charters of ecotravelers to Kamchatka from that country. Innovative ideas and excellent operational qualities characterize this agency. ExploreKam * Contact: Martha Madsen, Director explorekam@elizovo.ru Explore Kamchatka In 1991, Martha Madsen was the Curator of the Pratt Museum of Homer, Alaska. Even at that time, Martha had a great interest in bringing cultures together and worked with both native Alaskan and Koryak and Even cultures of Kamchatka. Little did she know that she would eventually move from Alaska to a totally different environment, Kamchatka, Russia? When I met Martha, she had finished a stint as Assistant Director for Program Development and Fund Raising at the Yelizovo District Library System and just started her career in travel with Yelizovo Tour Service. This agency was way ahead of the crowd, perhaps not in experience, but in concept as it brought together many of he smaller entrepreneurs who had specific skills related to travel and used their expertise to create and manage their own tours. Not an easy thing to do, in a region where competition is frowned upon. The idea itself though, offers the traveler the best experience. Martha not satisfied with this experience alone, also opened the first Bed & Breakfast in Yelizovo, in a house she and her Russian husband are carefully refurbishing. From feedback, we have heard they serve the most wonderful meals and the ambiance brings travelers back over and over again. Martha as an extension to her hospitality efforts also now operates her own tours, continuing the principle of joint operations with those who have the greatest knowledge. Martha is also the creator and editor of the Kamchatka Explorer brochure. This brochure contains great information about the region and its tourism possibilities. He has worked with many German and French groups and has an excellent reputation. Volgina, Owner climbkam@hotmail.ru This company has been offering hiking and climbing tours in Kamchatka for at least ten years. The company has also a partner in Alaska. Beringia Land ** Contact: Inna Obukhova, Executive Manager inna@mail.iks.ru Beringia Land has been leading sled dog races over the past years. . Beringia is a philosophy as much as a company, offering unique experiences beyond the conventional for the last twelve years. Itineraries offered include remote wilderness travel to general sightseeing and activities from hiking, river rafting and sea kayaking to dog sledding. The company focuses on tours off the beaten path an entrance into what makes Kamchatka so special. They did attend our training and have been excellent in following through with our recommendations. The company has established several ecotours in the region. Primorski Krai Dalintourist * Contact: Olga V Bekhtereva, Director Inbound Department dalint@mail.primorye.ru This company has good experience with international travelers and offers programs all over the Primorski Krai. One of their new efforts includes the development of community tourism in a small village north of Vladivostok. The village still offers travelers a look at the traditional way of life during the soviet years. Dalintourist offers accommodations in its own lodging facility. Villagers are employed in all activities and benefit economically from them. Mirabel Tour Company ** Contact: Elena Andreeva, General Director mirabel1@vladivsotok.ru An established, innovative tour company in Vladivostok offering a variety of tours in the region. They are one of the first agencies offering nature oriented tours to the local population and foreign travelers accompanied by a specialist. The agency is very supportive of new tour development and is always looking for new tour product. The company has excellent relationships with WWF/Russia and the local government. Clients include both Russian and foreign clients. Last year the company managed expedition cruise clients of Zegrahm, a well know US company. Cancun Mexico : TravelYucatan.com Cancun Mexico Info Including Beaches, Mayan Ruins, Tours Cancun Mexico CANCUN MEXICO Cancun is Mexico's most visited tourist destination and boasts over twenty-five thousand hotel rooms. There's golf, tennis lots of shopping facilities and a remarkable biodiversity. There are four hundred seventy-five bird species, over a hundred different mammals and twelve hundred plant species. Cancun has lots of beach and the hotels are magnificent. Some people actually never even leave the hotel grounds their entire vacation. This speaks volumes for some of these resorts situated on the edge of ocean beaches. The beautiful ocean are home to over two thousand five hundred marine species with five hundred different tropical fish. Cancun is located in the State of Quintana Roo at the most southern tip of the peninsula. It is divided into two sections: the Hotel Zone [Zona Hotelera] which is a 22 km sandy strip of land between a lagoon and seaside hotels located on Cancun Island and Cancun City/Downtown [El Centro] which is home to the many Mexicans who live in the district. Downtown is located on the mainland. Hurricane Wilma Distaster Information THE CANCUN HOTEL ZONE The hotel zone is an island shaped like a 7. It is joined to the mainland on the southern tip by the Punta Nizuc Bridge and the Playa Linda Bridge at the northern end. This 22 km strip of sandy beach is bisected by a long main street named Kukulcan Boulevard. On the north and south side of the island is the Caribbean Sea while an enormous lagoon named Laguna Nichupte is formed by the inside of the "7" on the islands southwest side. Cancun is similar to Miami or Myrtle Beach but with a more international flare . In some places you would be hard-pressed to notice the difference. You can however go on guided excursions from Cancun to almost anywhere in the Yucatan. CANCUN CITY/DOWNTOWN The city begins where Kukulcan Boulevard meets Bonampak Avenue at the most northern tip. In Cancun streets are named after Mayan cities. Today over 450,000 people live in this growing community. The heart of the city is known as "Downtown" [El Centro] which is where the main vendor markets are located on Tulum Avenue. There are also numerous restaurants and boutiques offering everything from cigars to exotic perfumes. NOTE: We have purchased expensive perfumes in Cancun at 1/3 the cost of the perfume in the US and Canada. HOTELS OFF THE BEACH STRIP There are many hotels off the beach strip and these hotels drop in price dramatically. Many are within a short drive or bus ride to the beach. The rule is that the closer to the beach you are the more expensive. You can also find some pretty expensive 5 Star resorts way off the beach that cater to people who don't necessarily feel the need to be near the sea. If you are backpacking and traveling by bus there are a number of cheap accommodations near the bus station. If you just stand there with your backpack/luggage somebody will approach you and suggest a hotel. These guys are the hotel reps and get a commission for bringing in customers. HOTELS ON THE BEACH STRIP Every time you blink it seems there is a new hotel. We have spoken to many people who have had marvelous stays in more than one hotel in the beach zone. Quite often we talk to people who have been going here for over a dozen years and have never had a negative experience with any of the hotels. If you are planning on going there, the following articles written by Jules Seigel are recommended reading. Jules has lived in the area for over 20 years. See "Recommended Readings" located at the bottom of this page. GETTING AROUND CANCUN Public Bus The cheapest way to get around is by public bus. The public bus system operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week everyday of the year. For more information see: Bus System For bus travel outside the hotel and city zones see: Mexican Bus Taxi You can get a taxi cab anywhere in Cancun [except the airport]. You can take a taxi to the airport, but taxis are not allowed to pick up passengers there [although they try]. Taxi rates are set by how many "zones" you travel through to get to your destination. There are no meters in the cabs. This way you can get a price up-front from the driver as to how much the fare will be. Rates are posted in most hotels near the front desk. NOTE: Taxi rates are more expensive from the front door of your hotel than if you walk to the street and flag down a taxi [hotels get a kick-back]. Car Rental There are numerous car rental agencies for you to choose from. For more information including links to car rental agency web sites see: Renting A Vehicle Walking The hotel zone is 22 kilometers long and the hotels and malls are spread out along the coast. Depending on where your hotel is you may be within walking distance of any of the "big malls". If you go to the tourist zone of the city, everything there is within walking distance [bus station, banks, restaurants, hotels etc.]. Bicycle Some hotels rent bikes. You can ride on the sidewalks on Kukulcan Blvd. but we don't recommend riding on the street. We have also never seen "locks" supplied with bike rentals so it is hard to visit a mall without leaving your bike unlocked. Mopeds All we can say about renting a moped is that if you do you are risking your life. Those things are death-traps. We have seen the damage done. THINGS TO KNOW Cancun is an international tourist destination and thus there is foreign money and experience here. Many of the hotels are co-owned by foreign investers who also supply experienced management. There are countless Americans, Germans, Italians, Swiss, and Canadians working here. This is the tourist Mecca of Mexico and the Mexican government provides a safe environment for this to flourish. Crime is taken very seriously here. You are indeed safe. The legacy of this typical American family began in 1983 when Clark (Chevy Chase) and his wife Ellen (Beverly D'Angelo) decided to take their kids Rusty and Audrey on a cross-country summer vacation to a Disneyland type theme park known as Walley World. This was to be the Griswold's first big trip away from home. Clark left nothing to chance using his new wiz-bang home computer to streamline all the finer details to ensure nothing went wrong. The Griswold's had been planning this perfect summer vacation all year and they were determined to make the most of it, but as they say "nothing ever goes according to plan", especially for the Griswold's. What could possibly go wrong, everything! They lose their money, their new car gets wrecked and Cousin Eddie (Randy Quaid) insists that Clark takes old Aunt Edna with them cross-country. Well if you thought things couldn't get any worse for the Griswold's, your wrong, old Aunt Edna unexpectedly dies and thrown in for good measure just to distract Clark from all the madness is the mysterious blonde (Christie Brinkley) in the flashy red Ferrari. This first Griswold adventure "National Lampoon's Vacation" introduces us to Chevy Chase's hilarious portrayal of Clark W. Griswold. This fast, funny satire written by John Hughes was a big success at the American box office bringing in over $61 million. Sadly in this episode Clark's gross-out Cousin Eddie (Randy Quaid) is absent, nevertheless "European Vacation" still brought in a neat $49.4 million at the US box office. Your vision of Christmas will never be the same again when the Griswold's decide to spend their Christmas holidays at home. In "Christmas Vacation" (1989) Clark wants to make sure his family enjoys Christmas the old-fashioned way, so the well-intentioned walking disaster zone invites the relatives and decides to light up his house like a Christmas tree. He gets 25,000 lights and covers the house from head to toe, but Clark is quickly driven insane when the lights refuse to switch on. The plot thickens when Clark discovers he has missed out on his Christmas bonus cheque that he was going to use to install a swimming pool in the backyard. Temperatures continue to rise when uninvited Cousin Eddie (Randy Quaid) turns up in his mobile home and when Clark kidnaps his boss in retaliation for not receiving his bonus cheque a SWAT team raids his house. "Christmas Vacation" was a smash hit and became the highest grossing of the four "Vacation" films bringing in over $71million at the US box office. Bumbling family man Clark Griswold is back in "Vegas Vacation" (1997), the fourth instalment of the "Vacation" series and as the movie poster says, "This time the Griswold's are on a roll." "Vegas Vacation" was a moderate hit at the US box office grossing $36.4 million. When Clark receives a work bonus for developing a food preservative, he spends the money in the only way he knows how, take the family on "Vacation". This time the Griswold's head off to the gambling capital of the world Las Vegas or as Clark would prefer to say "the new family entertainment capital of the world". The glitz and glamour of the Vegas casinos form the perfect backdrop for this Griswold family adventure. Randy Quaid is back as Clark's grubby goofball cousin Eddie and Mr.Las Vegas himself, crooner Wayne Newton adds to the atmosphere as he tries to romance Clark's wife Ellen (Beverly D'Angelo). To add to the hilarity, Clark nearly destroys the famous Hover Dam, takes part in a Siegfried and Roy disappearing trick and loses the family fortune to a shifty blackjack dealer, played with expertise by Wallace Shawn. Even old favourite Sid Caesar makes an unexpected but memorable appearance in the film's nail-bitting finale. "Vegas Vacation" has a fitting ending to a wonderful series of four films when it is revealed that Clark's son Rusty (Ethan Embry) has won 4 brand new vehicles during his round the clock gambling binge. In the final scene Clark, Ellen, Audrey and Rusty ride out of Vegas and onto the dusty desert highway leaving the audience with a smile on their faces and anxiously waiting for the fifth instalment.
