One must either walk or take an electric mini-car, such as the one sent from our hotel to ferry us and our luggage a few blocks to our accommodations. We stayed the night in Saas-Fee at the sparkling clean, comfortable and quiet Hotel Schweizerh, whose look is typical Swiss chalet. The rooms are modern and there is swimming pool and a restaurant on site. At the restaurant , guests can take pleasure in a full breakfast buffet each morning. Our meal began with an appetizer of lovely, light pumpkin soup, accompanied by a sliver of savory pumpkin tart. Next came a specialty of the house, chicken roasted in straw. The only thing that rivals the food is the restaurant's setting. It perches above Saas-Fee on a thickly wooded hillside and the terrace offers magnificent scenes of the valley below and the surrounding Alps . The hotel rooms here are also beautifully bedecked and boast the same scenic views. The next morning we were up early to get on the cableway to the top of the mountains. For most of the way, the cable car follows a traditional path, suspended high above the valley below. But about five minutes or so of the trip is through the inside of the mountains, aboard the Metro Alpine, the highest underground cableway in the world. Skiing in Saas-Fee is a year-round sport. After leaving the Ice Pavilion and skipping over the Alps via helicopter, we began our tour of Grimentz, located in a French-speaking area of Switzerland known as Val d'Anniviers. After our walk through Grimentz' Old Town , we drove to a nearby camping and picnic area for a cookout, Swiss-styl e. Our trip of this European region was worth seeing. The construction is glorious, there are plentiful gardens, and it's a pedestrian's heaven. The Hofburg Palace was begun in the 13th century, then expanded and altered for centuries, incorporating numerous architectural styles . Like all good European royalty, the Habsburgs also had their summer palace. An irresistible experience of embellishment. The gardens are very stunning, and well matched to a calm wander. Although the directory of places to visit in Vienna is very long, you certainly don't want to miss Maria Theresa Platz. Flanked on two sides by the matching museums of Fine Art and of Natural History, it's an outstanding place to sit and reflect the beauty of Vienna . Both museums are also value losing you in for a while. As a final touch to the day, the Prater Amusement Park is full of traditional delights . The huge ferris wheel in the centre of the park provides a great view of the city at night, and may provide a sense for those who enjoy spy movies. Several people pass through Vienna in a rush on their whistle stop tour of Europe , and neglect on this city's many beauties and allure. Mention the city of Salzburg , in Austria , and it's amazing how many people burst into their favorite song from “The Sound of Music”. Despite this, Salzburg has another claim to musical fame – it was the birthplace of Mozart. With much of its central city relatively untouched for centuries, Salzburg also offers the chance to see magnificent architecture in abundance. No trip to Salzburg would be complete without a visit to Festung Hohensalzburg – the Hohensalzburg Fortress. This old building dominates the old part of Salzburg , sitting on a hill above the city. You can be lively and walk 15 minutes up the hill to reach it. When you reach the top, if you respire hasn't already been taken away by the walk, it will be when you see the stunning views in so many directions. You can pay to visit the interior of the fortress, which includes a charming look at everything. If you have plans to visit Austria , then make sure you include Salzburg on your route. There is so much to enjoy and esteem, and something to suit everybody's experience. Australia, even though very hot most of the time, has some of the finest slopes during the winter. Europe has the most well- known and visited ski slopes, the Alps. Scandinavia is well, Scandinavia. And then there's the United States that boast with the grandest of slopes in the States of Colorado, Nevada and Utah. Let's not forget the Olympics at Salt Lake City, Utah. Going on a ski vacation is a wonderful experience or as the saying goes - let your hair down and have some fun. Skiing is the greatest thing in the world for people who like being out in the cold. Not only can you enjoy skiing, but also enjoy the sport of snowboarding or snowmobiling. Skiing trips are great destinations for a romantic getaway any time of the year; that is why many travel agencies provide them in their honeymoon packages. It can't get any better when you combine a romantic liaison with skiing. Another activity in which you can take part in during a ski vacation is dog sledding or tobogganing. These are some of the most exhilarating activities in the world. There is nothing like the howling of the dogs and their excitement as they anticipate beginning to run. As soon as they are off there is no sound except their feet hitting the packed snow. Or the thrill of the sliding toboggan as it heads down an icy slope. After all this hard work outdoors in the cold you will definitely want to come inside for some rest and relaxation. Many romantic skiing vacation packages include a warm candle light dinner next to a cozy fire and a warm port for afterwards. Playing all day and relaxing in the evening is a great way to spend vacation time no matter what the occasion. The Internet has numerous sites to help you choose a skiing vacation. The best packages for your dollar are the one's that can book everything for you including your air transportation to and from your vacation site, the lift tickets to the slopes, your accommodations and car rental. You can find companies that can offer an all inclusive package. You might even want to include activities off the slopes such as touring local attractions, getting pampered at the nearest health spa or taking skiing lessons while on vacation. Whatever you choose, purchasing packages that include all you desire will make your vacation easier, more affordable with lots of fun for everyone. You'll find that much of it is spread throughout modern life and as well is a strong basis for many of the other myths that can be found in other cultures. Many centuries ago Greek myths were the only religion for the people living in those times. While passage of time have resulted in blurred images and details, the core elements of all these myths have continued to survive in one form or other. In earlier times it was the Olympians that were prayed to and now these have been replaced by gods. Studies have revealed that Homeric Hymns and Homer are the source of origin of many Greek myths. It is safe to assume that since these were the first writings of Greek myths, they travelled from mouth to mouth and different interpretations may have resulted in some twists and turns before actually putting it down to paper. Therefore, most probably some information is missing from what we read today about the written words of Greeks myths and legends. Even though we know these mythical stories aren't exactly the same as they were originally, they still fascinate us. One of the best known creatures of that era is the Cyclops. It was a horrible looking monster who had only one eye, and it was in the middle of his forehead. There were actually three famous Cyclops: Arges, the lightning bolt, Steropes, lightning itself, and Brontes, was thunder. These Cyclops were sons of Uranus and Gaea (Mother Earth), two more Greek mythological creatures. The god of the skies and first king of the Olympians was Uranus. He and his mother Gaea produced the Titans. In Greek mythology it doesn't matter if mothers and sons produce children. Some historians have trouble dealing with this concept. Prometheus, who was the son of Iapetus, was the wisest, most intelligent of all the Titans. His name means "forethought". Because he was able to see into the future, people revered him. He was also the only Titan to battle with Zeus in a war against Cronus. Cronus was one of the most feared Titans, since he was the one that killed his father, Uranus, to gain power. Cronus married Rhea and together they had several children. However, in an attempt to always retain the power that he had, Cronus ate each of his children while they were being born. Eventually Rhea fooled Cronus into eating a stone instead of one of her children. This child became known as Zeus, who in later years would fight against Cronus with Prometheus, banishing Cronus to the underworld. Another Greek mythological creature is Typhoeus. Typhoeus was a dragon who breathed fire with his one hundred heads. This mythical creature has become the basis for much Greek art and sculpture. Typhoeus was eventually slain by Zeus and his resting place is said to be under Mount Etna. The legends of Greek mythology are endless and will keep you reading for hours. On the other side of the coin there is Roman mythology, which has its own heroes and monsters. Each of these cultures has a fascinating history that is brought to life through these myths and legends, highly influencing art and music to this day . The landscape is just as spectacular as the people are welcoming and cooperative. It was bizarre to be footing on the world's most northerly mainland point and we are now looking forward to a fishing cabin holiday. We've seen the Midnight Sun before, but it's a great experience every time. We have experienced something new and thrilling every day, particularly when we've been onto land and experienced something of the indigenous culture. Hope rise as their move toward to the Troll fjord is announced. A 3 kilometer long, 90 meter wide fjord is a strange experience in a large ship. It doesn't matter that it's raining either: the top deck has glass walls and we're warm and dry in our deckchairs as the whole scene is served to us on a gold platter while we're drinking our afternoon coffee. We sense something beautiful, something stimulating, as if we are part of something much larger in this slim fjord. My trip on a cruise can safely be called the world's most striking voyage. Mary King takes a pilgrimage. D own the ages various rumors and tales have circulated about the sacred mirror of Amaterasu, the Sun Goddess. It was once said that whoever laid eyes on the mirror would immediately be struck blind, a possible deterrent for would-be thieves. Others have claimed to have seen the mirror and reported that it is inscribed with ancient Hebrew lettering, reading “eheyeh asher eheyeh,” the name of the Judaic-Christian God written in Exodus 3:14 and meaning “I AM THAT I AM.” Heavenly abode Japan’s sacred mirror, one of three items of the Imperial Regalia, is kept in the Inner Shrine (Naiku) at Ise Grand Shrine, a sanctuary that many visitors to the Mie Prefecture city of Ise are astonished to discover they are not allowed to enter or even see. Ise Jingu, popularly known as “O-Ise-san,” or officially “Jingu,” holds the most honored position among the more than 100,000 Shinto shrines that are scattered throughout the breadth of Japan. The site of the nation’s most Holy of Holies, and boasting some of the world’s greatest architectural monuments, Jingu is also home to some of the simplest and most mysterious structures. Described as the “starting point for all journeys in Japan,” Ise is regarded as the spiritual home of the Japanese, a place to which most wish to make at least one pilgrimage to in their lives. In fact, more than six million pilgrims and worshipers come to Jingu each year, crossing the Uji Bridge spanning the sacred Isuzu River to symbolically leave behind the temporal world and enter a “pure world” of kami (gods and spirits) and the ancient mythology of the land. Odyssey Passing through the second huge torii at the end of Uji Bridge, a long gravel approach leads you through a natural cathedral of towering cryptomeria. Pilgrim and tourist alike are taken on a divine journey toward the Naiku and Geku, where Amaterasu and Toyouke (God of Abundant Food) are respectively worshipped. It is an unforgettable odyssey, one that spirits you back to the country’s earliest recorded “history” that tells of the “Age of Kami,” the creation of Japan and the origins of its people right through to the Imperial line and succeeding generations of emperors and empresses. The auxiliary shrines resemble ancient granaries The Geku (Outer Shrine) was dedicated to the grain deity Toyouke, possibly in a bid to bolster the new imperial cult that started, according to the myth, when Amaterasu sent her grandson, Ninigi no Mikoto, down to earth to rule. The Sun Goddess handed her grandson the mirror that had lured her out of her cave, along with Susano’s sword, and a curved jewel. The mirror (yata no kagami), along with the jewel and sword, remain the Three Imperial Regalia, symbols of divine authority, and to this day the emperor conducts rites to ensure a bountiful harvest as well as secret rituals in which he symbolically mates with the Sun Goddess. The high priestess of Ise, meanwhile, has traditionally been an Imperial princess, reflecting the nation’s early history of shamanesses, priestesses and ruling empresses. Having passed through large open grounds and crossed over a small bridge (hiyokebashi), you gradually move towards the more sacred area of the Naiku. To the right of the main pilgrimage path is located a font for the ablutions made by pilgrims prior to proceeding toward the main sanctuary grounds. Beyond the daiichi torii (first sacred gateway) are steps that lead to the Isuzu River, where since ancient times pilgrims have purified their body and mind by washing their hands in, and rinsing their mouths with, the waters of this sacred river. According to Shinto thought, one’s pure mind and body given by the kami must be ritually cleansed so as to return to a state of purity. Amaterasu Omikami is enshrined in the main sanctuary building, the Goshoden, of the inner sanctum of Naiku, in which the august mirror, her symbol or goshintai, is kept and worshipped. As they are considered most sacred, pilgrims or other visitors may see neither the mirror nor the main sanctuary. In fact, the only people allowed to enter the Holy of Holies, according to my guide, are members of the Imperial Family, although on one occasion, it is rumored, Queen Elizabeth was invited in. Restoration Except for the exalted mirror, all of Jingu’s other sacred shrines and objects must be reconstructed in synch with each 20-year Shikinen Sengyo cycle. The elaborate transference procession and ceremony involves the remaking of some 491 holy treasures, 1600 accessories and 125 kinds of sacred apparel that are then put in their proscribed places by the priests. Formerly used objects are kept in the nearby Jingu History Museum, which is open to the public. It is possible to find two absolutely identical Naiku and Geku standing side by side-one old, one new. In time the older one will be deconstructed and its wooden parts, now forever consecrated, recycled as repair pieces for other shrines around Japan. The newer one-once the transference of holy objects has been consummated-hence replaces the old as a locus of veneration. The shrines themselves are thought to resemble ancient granaries or storehouses and are built from Japanese cypress (hinoki) from the Kiso forestry preserves extending between the Gifu and Nagano Prefectures. Befitting the reverence accorded to these sanctified building blocks, death, loss of a limb, or imprisonment have, over the centuries, been the penalties for felling these jewels. A visit to the majestic Ise shrine allows one to understand why. Where to stay: Oaken, tel: 059-622-2589; Hinodekan, Tel: 059-628-2954; Saekikan, tel: 059-628-2017; Okubun, tel: 059-628-2231. December 12, 2005 Student Travel (Usually Cheap Travel) Thanks to Kathleen Crislip who runs the student travel section of About.com. She mentioned The World's Cheapest Destinations in her holiday gift feature: Top 10 Best Student Travel Books 2005. I feel kind of guilty being on this esteemed list since my book came out a few years ago. But I am hard at work on the home stretch of an updated version, due out sometime around the end of February next year. No earth-shattering changes, but much of Eastern Europe has gotten more expensive, especially for Americans, and a few up and comers have gotten more attractive. New additions will be Argentina, Nicaragua, and Romania. I want to keep the number at 21 though, which means a few will drop out and become "honorable mentions." I'm also adding a short bit on East Africa, since more than a few backpackers make that trek down the coast. Having just gotten back from Botswana and South Africa, however (more on that in the next blog), I stand by my assertion that just because a region has a lower per-capita GDP than where you come from, it doesn't mean it's a bargain. If you are a student traveling on a budget, as opposed to a trustafarian who just wears the uniform of the rebellious disenchanted, you need to go where your limited funds will go a long way. This means avoiding the places 90% of college kids on summer vacation set off for: Western Europe, Australia, the U.S., Canada, and New Zealand. Yes, it sounds cool to say you spent your summer bopping around London, Paris, Amsterdam, New York, and Sydney, but you'll come back with a debt load rivaling next semester's tuition. Look beyond the obvious--it'll be much more of an adventure, and you can live it up on the cheap. Posted by Tim Leffel at 10:43 AM November 29, 2005 A Home Abroad vs. A Home at Home Many long-term travelers daydream about not just passing through the places they go, but actually picking one and moving there. Their friends and relatives might tell them it's risky, but is it really more risky than buying something in our current overheated home markets? After all, with housing prices through the roof in most developed countries now, buying land or a house overseas is looking like a safer bet. I won't say more since I wrote a long article on the subject for the current issue of Offshore Real Estate and Investment Quarterly , put out by the publishers of EscapeArtist.com. But I will add that when you start reading EscapeArtist and International Living on a regular basis, you realize that some people don't just daydream about buying a little place of their own overseas someday--they really do it. Lots of them. Every month. Then after they get there, they often find they're spending a small fraction of what they did at home. A safer investment and cheaper living--a nice combination.
