FREE Newsletter. Sign Up Now! Valencia - Location: Valencia is located on Spain's eastern Mediterranean coast, on the Gulf of Valencia at the mouth of the Turia river. Throughout history, Valencia was one of the most important sea ports of the Iberian peninsula. Valencia is 350 km from either Madrid to the west or Barcelona, to the north. Valencia Population: Valencia's population is estimated at around 790,000 people. Languages of Valencia: Residents of Valencia speak Spanish, of course, but you'll also hear "Valenciano" when you're touring the neighborhoods. Valencia Train Stations: The Norte Railway Station of Valencia is located in the heart of Valencia. Daily connections to Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla, Alicante, Port Bou (French border), Zaragoza, Bilbao and trains to other provinces leave from here. For more information and train schedules see RENFE , the Spanish Railway Service. Valencia Weather: Valencia is dominated by a Mediterranean climate, meaning there are warm and dry summers with relatively mild winters. The rainy season comes primarily in spring and fall, when there are occasional torrential rainfalls. The average July and August temperatures are 25 degrees Centigrade. For a Valencia weather forecast, see Valencia, Spain Forecast: Weather Underground . Las Fallas - Valencia's Most Famous Festival: Las Fallas is a festival held from March 12th to March 19th. What are Las Fallas? Huge papier-mache art sculptures are erected on almost every square. Usually there are around 300 of these, and most are indicative of social criticism and sarcasm. Then, on March 19th the Fallas are simultaneously burned at midnight in a ritual called " la nit del foc " Fiona Honor Hurley has written a wonderful description of Las Fallas for Boots and All, called The Fires of Spring . Valencia - The Covered Market: Fans of covered markets will want to head over to Valencia's huge central market, al Mercado Central de Valencia , for a fix. You'll find 8000 square meters of market space inside the steel and glass building decorated with Valencian ceramic tiles. Nearby is the Llotja de a Seda , the Silk Exchange, in Placa del Mercat--a testament to Valencia's lofty position in the silk trade. Shopping in Valencia: Handicrafts: What to look for in Valencia markets? Ceramics is one of the big hits, and anything crafted in wood or vegetable fibers is a good bet, as Valencia is in a very green zone. Rice is one of the big foodstuffs tourists might buy if they don't mind lugging a few kilos of rice around Europe for that next big paella. City of Arts and Sciences, Valencia, Spain: The 87-acre site contains Hemispheric , housing a planetarium and imax theater, the Trojan helmet like Palau de les Artes and the hands-on Prince Felipe Museum of the Sciences ( Museu de les Ciències Príncipe Felipe) , where you are encouraged to build and discover elements of science. There's also L'Oceanogràfic , called the largest aquarium in Europe, housing species in pavilions named after their home oceans and seas. A covered garden view promenade called Umbracle brings it all together. Attractions in Valencia: Valencia is a city of art and history. There are lots of museums to visit. Here is a list of the most frequented: Bulfight Art Museum - right by the train station at C. Dr. Serra 16, the first museum in the world devoted to bullfighting. El Museo de Bellas Artas de Valencia - The fine arts museum is second only to Madrid's Prado. Lots of works from Valencia's golden age around the 15th century. Museum of Science "Principe Felipe" at 5 Avenida Autopista de El Saler 46013, an interactive museum inside the City of Arts and Science with exhibitions about science and technology. Valencian Institute of Modern Art - One of the best modern museums in Spain--plus the ancient walls cut right through it. For other interesting museums, see Museums in Valencia from Valencia Online. Valencia's Botanic Gardens , Jardi Botanic , are the oldest in the city and one of the more interesting in Europe, containing over 40,000 plants. Valencia's Cathedral was started in the 13th century, finished in the 15th. Although primarily gothic, it contains a mix of styles reflecting aspects of romanesque, gothic and baroque construction. There are guided tours from 4-7pm for a small charge. The Cathedral Museum, Museu de la Seo , is a little museum chock full of amazing treasures collected by the church. Find more interesting Valencia attractions in Valencia Online's Interesting places . Nighlife - Bohemians head over to the Barrio del Carmen , the "real" old town of Valencia with winding and narrow streets, the houses now teeming with restaurants, bars and clubs. In the summer the action moves over to the pubs and hangouts in the beach zone, along the Neptuno Avenue. Folks head out around 11, or earlier if tapas is required before your long night out. This is Spain, so you can't eat earlier than 9 or so unless it's tapas. Benelux and Beyond - Northern European Vacation Ideas for the Benelux Countries You are here: About > Travel > Europe for Visitors > Benelux Countries > Benelux and Beyond - Northern European Vacation Ideas for the Benelux Countries Travel Go Europe Essentials European Vacation Planning Map Europe Travel 101 - Before you Go European Distances The Best of Europe European Photo Gallery Articles & Resources Europe Travel Planning What to do In Europe Lodging - Hotels and More European Travel Maps Sex and Nudism Travel Photography Transportation Benelux Countries France Germany Austria Switzerland Greece Italy and Malta Travel Info Scandinavian Travel Spain and Portugal United Kingdom and Ireland Buyer's Guide Before You Buy Top Picks Italy Travel Guidebooks Europe Travel Guidebooks German Travel Guidebooks Product Reviews Forums Help FREE Newsletter Sign Up Now for the Europe for Visitors newsletter! See Online Courses Search Europe for Visitors Benelux and Beyond - Northern European Vacation Ideas for the Benelux Countries 5 Countries in 14 days? Why Not? If you have a short vacation and want to travel through the most varied cultural landscapes in a short time, why not consider Benilux--Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg--along with adjacent pieces of the bookend countries of France and Germany? Short distances and the availability of high speed rail connections mean that you won't spend all your time looking out a window on a moving landscape. Plus, Benelux rail 'n drive packages give you the flexibility to see it all by train and car. The Benelux countryside is flat and watery--you can bike or walk on tow paths along the many canals to observe calming rural vistas for hours. Benelux Countries - Benelux Rail Map Benelux Map © 2005 by James Martin, licensed to About Why Benelux? Benelux is compact. It's 123 miles between Brussels and Amsterdam, 184 miles between Paris and Brussels--and both of these destinations are served by high speed rail that'll speed you between Paris and Brussels in one hour and 25 minutes. Folks in Benelux countries are quite likely to speak English , since the local languages are confined to a relatively small goegraphic area. Benelux hospitality is legendary --you might want to consider a farm stay while you're there--especially if you have kids--to test the friendliness of the natives and get a feeling for what it's like (more below). Variety - and France and Germany are just across the border. Not only do you have three countries to visit, all within an hour or so travel time between each other, center to center, but France and Germany are easily visited as well. Lille, just across the border in France, was a European capital of Culture for 2004, and it's a major rail hub for high speed trains. Koln (Cologne) and its famous cathedral are also close, and the landscape around Trier--a colonial capital under Roman Emperor Augustus in 16 BC and Germany’s oldest city--is beautiful, and the city isa good starting point for trips into theMosel Valley and cruises on the scenic Mosel River, Germany’s mainwine-producing region--just in case you get tired of the almost infinite varietyof Beer styles you find in Belgium that is. Getting to the Benelux Countries You'll probably start your vacation from a large city. Major airports usually offer the best fares from the US, so you'll probably be starting from Paris, Frankfurt, or Amsterdam. If you find a good fare to London (or wish to add that city to your visit), you can take the Eurostar from London to either Paris or Lille, and continue your Benelux vacation from there. Getting Around the Benelux Countries While rail is highly recommended, and trains can get to most cities in the Benelux countries, you might want to also view a little of the countryside. Rail 'n Drive passes make this easy. Plan Your Benelux Adventure Transportation Rail Passes (Including Rail 'n Drive Passes) for Benelux, France and Germany. Thalys - High Speed Train Information - The thick blue line on the map is the Thalys route. Eurostar - All About the Eurostar - London to Lille, Paris, and Brussels. If your end point is Brussels, you'll get a free pass to any other stop in Belgium, just in case you wish to avoid Brussels altogether. Destinations in or Accessable from Benelux Lille, France Reims and the Champagne Region of France Belgium: Belgium Guide | Belgium Map | Belgium Pictures Netherlands: NetherlandsGuide | NetherlandsMap | Amsterdam Guide Luxembourg: Luxembourg Guide Cologne, Germany Dusseldorf Germany Frankfurt, Germany Trier, Germany Farm Stays in Belgium Many "farm" stays don't set you down in a real, working farm. I've found the Spreeuwenburg farm in a perfect location in the Belgian countryside not so far from the Netherlands border and nearby to the justly famous old smuggler house turned into a restaurant bar, Roste Muis. Read more: A Pleasant and Inexpensive Farm stay in Belgium . Benelux - The Final Word I hope you'll check out the Benelux countries. The major cities are interesting and chock full of art from old masters. Belgium cuisine is considered one of the best in Europe, and the beer is outstanding as well. Amsterdam is an amazing city, and if you want to visit a city that's mostly ignored by tourists, look into Antwerp, Belgium. Peter Paul Ruben's house makes an outstanding visit--and even Antwerp's main train station is worthy of the label "Railway Cathedral." From James Martin , Your Guide to Europe for Visitors . Although the voltage is universal, you will still need an adapter to plug your computer into an electrical outlet. While in Germany, the Internet is easily accessible. You can often log on at your hotel, either right from your room or in computer rooms, and at business centers, which offer internet access to guests. If neither is available, ask your hotel about an Internet café – chances are excellent one is right around the corner! Electric Current Germany uses 230V. Therefore, a converter will be needed in order to use american 110V devices. They are located at bank branches and standing alone in shopping, tourist and other busy areas. Major credit and debit cards, along with all other bank cards carrying the PLUS and NYCE symbols, are universally accepted. When located indoors, use your card to gain access if the door is locked, just as you would normally do. Credit Cards: Credit cards are commonly accepted in Germany, although they are not often used for everyday expenses. Restaurants, hotels, stores, train stations and other places regularly frequented by tourists will almost always accept them. Tipping: The bill you receive at a hotel, restaurant, cafe or bar often includes a service charge already. A tip is an indication of your satisfaction – 5% is average, whereas 10% indicates exceptional service. Tip taxi drivers about 5% and porters and others who assist you with baggage one Euro per item. VAT Refunds & Tax-Free Shopping Prices for goods and services in Germany always include a 16% value-added tax (VAT). Some or all of the VAT may be refundable for goods purchased at stores displaying the “Tax-Free for Tourists” sign. You will receive a tax-free form upon making a purchase. Before leaving the country and before checking any luggage, present the purchased goods, the tax-free form and your receipt to German customs officials. They will certify the form as proof of legal export. You may then obtain a cash refund at one of the Tax-Free Shopping Service counters located at all major border crossings, airports, ferry ports and train stations.
