FREE Newsletter. Sign Up Now! Tarragona - Location:  Tarragona is located on the Mediterranean coast, 60 miles southwest of Barcelona, Spain, in the region of Catalonia. While ealier settlements may have inhabited the area, the first occupation of Tarragona is attributed to Gneus Scipio, who founded a Roman military camp here in 218 B.C. It grew quickly and was named a colony of Rome in 45 B.C. by Julius Ceasar. Tarragona is considered the most important Roman town in Spain. Tarragona - Population:  Tarragona has about 110,000 people. Tarragona - Getting There by Train:  The Tarragona train station is in the Plaza Pedrera. There are 8 trains a day to and from Madrid, and many to Barcelona, just up the coast, about an hour and a half away. The station at Tarragona is close to the port and to the main street, the Rambla Nova. Turn right out of the station and go up the hill; there are several hotels on this end of the Rambla. Staying in Tarragona:  Look for a hotel near the sea, where the Rambla dead-ends. We stayed at the Hotel Lauria at Rambla Nova 20, and found it comfortable, centrally located, and air conditioned for 64 Euros a double in high season 2003. Tarragona Cuisine:  Think seafood, nuts, onions, tomatoes, oil and garlic. Romesco sauce is a product of this area. Tapas are plentiful in the Rambla Nova area, as well as the interesting Placa de la Font, which you'll find loaded with cafes and restaurants, the place to head on your early evening stroll. Tarragona is know for its fine wine as well. Tarragona Beaches and Naturism:  Tarragona is the main city on the Costa Dorada. There are many beaches and coves nearby. Todotown has a review of beaches in or near Tarragona. Playa El Torn is where you can get naked and sunburned in public. Tarragona Closing Days:  Unless quiet is your ultimate goal, don't go for a day trip to Tarragona on Monday--everything is closed. Tarragona Attractions:   Amfiteatre Romà - The Roman Amphitheater is located seaside, just off the Rambla Nova. Cathedral - At Tarragona's apex sits the 12th century cathedral. Inside is the Museu Diocesà, with a collection of Catalán art you can visit for 2.40 Euros. The Archaeological Museum - At Plaça del Rei 5, overlooking the sea. Free on Tuesdays. Museu Necròpolis - The Necropolis Museum outside town that's one of the most important Christian burial sites in Spain, used in the 3-5th centuries. Tarragona Notes: You'll find some interesting bars and seafood restaurants in the Port area near the marina. I also heartily recommend the Placa de la Font area for its lively cafe and tapas scene. Remember that Spaniards eat dinner very late in the evening. Often 9pm is a bit early for eating. Tarragona, besides being a fine city peppered with Roman ruins and good restaurants, is a relatively innexpensive place to stay while visiting Catalonia. You can get to Barcelona in about an hour and a half, although it's quite a walk from the Barcelona station to the Gothic Quarter--you can take a bus or cab. Building human pyramids is a Catalonian sport. Castellers have been building human pyramids here, some as high as 5 story buildings, for hundreds of hears. You can see them in action in Tarragona during the Sant Magi festival in mid-August. Jill Yesko has written an excellent article about this phenomenon called Castells in Spain in Away.com. Like many students, I was on a tight budget on my first visit to Europe. Living in England at the time, I found a package deal through the Eurolines bus network that seemed to be what I was looking for. Eurolines is downright cheap compared with European rail passes. On England’s Eurolines web site, www.eurolines.com , you may see their inexpensive current rates for 15, 30 and 40 days. My mini-pass started and ended in London, by way of Brussels, Amsterdam, and Paris. The advantages of traveling by train over bus include more legroom, more frequent opportunities to stand up and stretch, more destinations, and significantly more punctual schedules. In addition, sleeping cars are available, meaning you’ll be refreshed after a night of travel. Complete Eurail price lists and schedules are available at www.railpass.com . Eurail passes can be customized to your specific travel plans. If you’d rather skip ground travel all together, airlines such as Easy Jet ( www.easyjet.com ) and Ryanair ( www.ryanair.com ) offer cheap daily flights all over Europe. If your travel dates are flexible, discount flights can save you time and money. Ultimately, when deciding how to get around Europe, you must consider not only your budget but also how much time you have to spend on traveling and how much you value comfort. Having sampled all three options on separate one-month trips through Europe, I would suggest you seriously consider taking a train or airplane over a bus network. David Tomanek's Russia Travel Page David Tomanek's Russia Travel Page This is one of the most unusual destinations I have visited so far.Below are some of the noteworthy facts you will appreciate knowing as a visitor. To a large degree unspoiled by the Communist system, Russians (and other nationals of the former Soviet Union) have kept up withtheir tradition of hospitality. While service personnel may be unfriendly, people are generally friendly, caring and helpful on a personal level. Culture in its original sense, not restricted to performingarts or architecture, and including culture of human relationships,is highly valued. It is truly a joy to get involved in a livelydiscussion with Russians about Art, Science or Politics, and feel theexcitement and deep desire to find the fundamental truth. This alonemakes an encounter with the Russian culture worth the trip. With amazing accuracy, locals spot foreigners even beforethey open their mouth. By default, foreigners are assumed to beAmericans. Ownership of a car provides drivers with a license to kill. To alesser degree, this also applies at pedestrian cross­walks,where car drivers exercise their right of way somewhat lessaggressively. The dual­pricing system, where foreigners are charged a higherrate than locals for the same service, is an outgrowth of plannedeconomy in desperate need for resources. More resources are believedto be generated using the well­established method to increase egg production by forcing chickens to lay several eggs a day, rather thanacquiring more chickens. This dual­pricing system has recently reached a new level ofabsurdity. As an example, the beautiful state Hermitage museum in St.Petersburg charges foreigners 15­20 times more than Russians. Individual tourism is efficiently suppressed by linking visarequirements to a hotel reservation. This provides hotels with aneffective monopoly on visa, and allowing for hotel rates, applied toforeigners, to be a multiple of those applied to locals. Individualtourists are often asked to pay the price of a western first­classhotel accommodation for a room without running water or toilet paper. One unusual exception from this rule is the American­founded Youth Hostel in St. Petersburg .It charges locals and visitors the same rate of US$ 19 per night perperson (as of Summer 1997) in clean rooms with few beds. Showers andtoilets are unusually clean by local hotel standards. There are noage restrictions. Most important, the hostel is run very efficientlyby an in­house travel agency that specializes in arranging visa. Thehostel/travel agency runs a server on the internet and a very useful Web site .
