Beaches, giant water falls in tropical rainforests, skiing in the Andes, horseriding on the Pampas, or watching whales and penguins off the tip of Patagonia . All you need in Argentina is time. Travel and Leisure : The Buenos Aires Herald's travel section, covering Argentina and beyond. Virtual Argentina : General information on places of interest around Argentina. Iguaz National Park The area extends on both sides of the River Iguaz and its water falls between Brazil and Argentina. Derived from a Guaran word for great water, the name is Iguau in Portuguese-speaking Brazil. The falls are the centrepiece of the parks. Over 60 m high, the series of falls and cascades stretch for 4 km in the wet season. Visitors can view the base of the falls in Argentina, and the lip in Brazil . The Great Waters Rain Forest : This is the region of the great rivers, of the humid tropics, of the red earth and the magnificent jungle. A virgin jungle full of gigantic trees, and extraordinary flora and fauna. Great Waters, in the Guaran language Iguaz, which overflow with a roar in one of the wonders of the world, the Falls of Iguaz. Pampa Region The Pamas are the vast treeless plains of central Argentina that stretches from the Atlantic coast to the Andes Mountains. The humid Pampa, eastern portion, is one of the most fertile regions in the country. The dry Pampa is the area towards the Andes, a less populated region famous for its horses, and sheep. The name Pampas comes from a Quechua Native American term for flat land or plain. Argentine Ranches : Fancy horseriding on an Argentine estancia? La Pampa -- Land of the Gaucho : La Pampa is a sea of green grass that occupies a quarter of the country. Home of the legendary gaucho, all the romantic fantasies about Argentina are concentrated here. The Andes The great mountain range of the Andes forms the spine of South America. Running almost parallel with the Pacific coast, the Andes stretch for more than 7,000 km -- that's 41/2 thousand miles, from Panama down towards Cape Horn. The highest mountain in the western hemisphere is in the Andes -- Argentina's Aconcagua (6,959 m). South America Touches the Sky : The North-western and the Cuyo are regions of high peaks -- here is the Aconcagua, stone sentinel - snow-capped volcanoes, plateaux, ravines and deserts. Under clear blue sky, small villages let the seasons pass by quietly, only interrupted by the carnivals, Indian markets and the worship of "Pachamama" or Mother Earth who provides maize and the pastures where the llamas and guanacos graze. Mount Aconcagua : The Aconcagua, in the province of Mendoza, is the highest mountain in the Americas. The passes through the Andes are at their highest, steepest, and narrowest in Peru . Arequipa to Puno (4,468 m); Lima to Tarma and Cerro de Pasco (4,804 m). Between Mendoza, Argentina, and Santiago, Chile , the Uspallata Pass, still reaches a staggering 3,900 m. Between Puerto Montt and Bariloche: Crossing the lakes and lower mountain passes of the southern Andes, with a condor flying overhead, beats looking up at hang-gliders in the Alps. During this evening, families gather together to celebrate and share traditional holiday dishes such as turkey, and regional dishes including bacalao a la vizcaina (Biscayan dried cod), and romeritos, wild greens in mole sauce. For the holiday toast, the typical drink is ponche con piquete - similar to hot apple cider, made of seasonal fruits, cinnamon sticks, and spiked with brandy or rum. After dinner, gifts are opened around the Christmas tree and many families have a piata which marks the end of the posadas tradition. Afterward, the little ones usually go to bed earlier so that Santa can come, with the adults celebrating late into the night. 12/22/2005 PAMBER YOURSELF IN NAYARIT Punta de Mita, Nayarit, one of the most exclusive vacation spots in Mexico, will welcome a new ultra-luxe resort by Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide in 2007. One of these traditions, Las Posadas, takes place throughout the country on nine consecutive evenings, from Dec. 16 to 24. The posada is the reenactment of the journey Mary and Joseph took to Bethlehem for Christs birth. Entire communities participate in the processions that go from house to house seeking shelter until arriving at a local church where a special mass is held. The piata, a symbol of Christmas in Mexico, is the center of attention at the festivities as the children anxiously take turns trying to break it open. The piata, a symbol of sin, attracts humanity. As the piata is broken with the stick, the world is gradually eliminated of sin, and the goodies that ultimately break free represent the gifts that God has bestowed upon the world. Enjoy Mexico States posada and piata fair, celebrated in Alcoman. The fair features a posada procession and childrens party. Among the piatas on display are those made from clay, traditional models with seven points that symbolize the seven deadly sins, and those made from cardboard with popular children's designs. Workshops in piata-making are also offered. A world away from the high-rise hotel blocks and apartments that are associated with some other coastal areas of Spain, this Costa is subdued and altogether much more inviting. Mile upon mile of sandy beach stretches out along the coastline, truncated ever so often by headlands that crash out into the sea. For discerning families looking for a quiet Spanish holiday getaway, the Costa Almeria is the place to go. Beyond the beaches There are a wide variety of places to visit that are within a short drive of the Costa de Almeria coastline. Here are some of the best… Tabernas - Home to the 'Westerns' of the 1960s and 1970s, Tabernas is formed of desert-like rocky outcrops and canyons that have played host to some of the most memorable movies of this era. Clint Eastwood's A Fist Full of Dollars, A Few Dollars More and The Good, The Bad & The Ugly were filmed here, as was The Magnificent Seven. The movie sets (there are three 'wild west' towns to visit) are now tourist attractions, with live wild west shows, stagecoach rides and working saloon bars to enjoy. Calar Alto Observatory - The province of Almeria lays claim to one of the sunniest spots in Europe. On average there are over 3100 hours of sunshine to be had in the area each year. Taking advantage of the exceptionally clear skies in this part of Spain is the Calar Alto Observatory - a collection of five giant telescopes, three of which are operated by the Max-Plank Institute in Germany. Although chiefly a scientific research establishment the white telescope domes are a spectacular sight at any time of the day or on a moonlit night. It is also possible to arrange visits to one or more of the domes by appointment in the Sierra de los Filabres. Sierra Nevada Mountains - When on the Costa de Almeria you cannot fail to notice the magnificent peaks of the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the west of the province. Snow capped for some six months of the year, the Sierra Nevada Mountain range is an all-year-round paradise. During the summer and autumn, hiking is the #1 activity, the mountainside yielding a fine network of paths to explore. During the winter and spring the Sierra Nevada becomes Europe's most southerly ski resort. Granada - A short distance downslope from the Sierra Nevada mountains is the beautiful town of Granada and its most famous of attractions - the Alhambra. A palace residence of Moslem kings that dates back to the 9th century, the Alhambra is a fortress (alcazaba), palace (alcazar) and a city (medina) all rolled into one. Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park - On the south-easternmost tip of Almeria is the 29,000-hectare Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park. Pristine beaches, jagged cliffs, salt flats and lagoons await all who explore this natural paradise. With eagles, peregrines, cormorants and razorbills on show, this is the place to come if you enjoy wildlife. Getting to Southeast Spain Travelers should opt to fly into Almeria City airport on the Costa de Almeria coast. Car hire can be booked in advance for pick up from the airport upon your arrival.
