Somehow Ellen (Bevery D'Angelo), the mom, gets kidnapped by gangsters, leading to a car chase that reunites the family, despite their differences. It's hard to believe that National Lampoon's European Vacation is only the second of the Vacation movies; it has the exhausted pallor of the last of a long series of sequels, drained of all zest or original ideas. The charmless smirk of Chevy Chase, mechanical in its idiocy, hangs over European Vacation like a death mask. It's hard to believe that this hack was once the funny and sexy hero of Foul Play . D'Angelo keeps her chin up and gives the movie whatever class it may have; she deserves better. --Bret Fetzer Product Description: The Griswalds are on vacation again when they win a deluxe tour of the old world and take on the European continent -- the continent loses. ( Report this ) 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful: Not on par with the original, but pretty close! , April 19, 2005 Reviewer: Britt Gillette "www.thedvdreport.com" (Chesapeake, VA USA) - See all my reviews Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo return as Clark and Ellen Griswold in National Lampoon's European Vacation, sequel to the original Vacation movie and precursor to the holiday classic Christmas Vacation. Like the other films, this edition contains different cast members to play the roles of Griswold children Audrey (Dana Hill) and Rusty (Jason Lively). The only Vacation movie that doesn't feature Cousin Eddie (Randy Quaid), European Vacation is nevertheless one hilarious movie. It's an old school comedy like they just don't make anymore... When the Griswold family appears on the hit TV game show, Pig In A Poke, they inadvertently beat a superior family and win an all-expenses paid trip to Europe. As usual, Clark is giddy about the wonderful trip of family bonding which he dreams his family will enjoy. But Audrey is mortified at the prospect of leaving her boyfriend behind. Nevertheless, the Griswolds hop on a plane bound for Europe. Right off the bat, Clark's dream vacation begins to experience shortcomings. The first hotel the family stays in is a half-star dump with a community bathroom, and Clark gets stuck on a circular roadway where he endlessly passes by Big Ben and Parliament. A couple of brilliant guest appearances are turned in by Eric Idle (of Monty Python fame) who plays the role of a zealously friendly biker. In one of the funniest scenes in the film, Clark smashes into the biker, who apologizes to Clark while hobbling away from the wreck and who springs a bloody leak from his wrist that he passes off as a mere "flesh wound". When Clark hits another motorist, he and the family are given the man's bumper as a souvenir to take home to America. As the Griswold clan makes their way across mainland Europe, especially in France and Germany, they encounter various pitfalls and cultural misunderstandings. Rusty causes a dog to jump to its death from the heights of the Eiffel Tower, and Clark instigates a riot in a small Bavarian township. One of the more memorable one-liners from the film is when Audrey tells Clark that in Germany "sex" means "six," so while searching for his relatives who live in apartment six, he greets some surprised residents with the tagline, "Hello, my family and I are looking for sex!" When the stress becomes unbearable, the vacation inevitably drives each of the family members in a different direction, but everyone is quickly brought back together when Ellen is kidnapped by a pair of petty criminals who want to get their hands on the family vacation fund. Clark must come to the rescue and save, not only his wife, but the family's entire vacation experience as well... A great comedy that contributes to the overall quality of the National Lampoon's Vacation films, European Vacation is a fun, family-oriented film. Those who enjoyed the exploits of Clark Griswold in the more recent Christmas Vacation or Vegas Vacation films will find it well worth their while to go back see this movie which many people have forgotten about. This is an utterly hilarious film in its own right, and clearly earns its designation as a must-see film... The DVD Report Was this review helpful to you? It is revealed in the intro, on his passport, that Clark's middle name is Wilhelm. Goofs Click here to see more Goofs In this movie, the family name is spelled Griswald. In other Vacation movies, it is spelled Griswold. Movie Connections Click here to see more Movie Connections Follows: Vacation Followed by: Christmas Vacation Alternate Versions Click here to see more Alternate Versions Some alternate takes of scenes were filmed especially for television, toning down the raunchy nature. For example, the female aerobic dancers in the television version are wearing tops. Another alternate take was of Rusty and the girl he meets in Germany. In the theatrical/video version, as they kiss, she unbuttons her uniform and Rusty stares at her breasts which we see. The alternate was her unbuttoning it and having a bra on. This take is on all television versions of the film today. When aired on TV, the scene where the Griswalds leave the house of people they thought were Helga and Fritz, Helga's reply (to Fritz's question of who the hell they were) of 'Beats the shit out of me' was changed to 'Damned if I know.' In the more recent TV airings, the original phrase was there with the word 'shit' blured on the subtitle. In the scene where Ellen sees the billboard with her picture on it advertising the stolen homemade porno flick, there are three different versions of the subtitles that explain the title. One is "The Wet Hot Wife," which appeared on the laserdisc version. Another was "The Slut in the Showers," which I believe appeared on the televised version. And the final was "The Whore in the Hot Tub," which appeared on one of the VHS incarnations. When aired on TV, Clark's song "The Sound of Griswald" was altered because one line of the song that goes: "This should spin around for a very long time" sounds too much like "This shit's been around for a very long time." When Clark's car suffers the blowout during the chase, he yells out the f-word. The television and VHS version dubs this to say "Darn it all!" The recent 2003 version seen on the Encore! network also has this dub, which is very evident. Quotes Click here to see more Quotes Stewardess : Can I get you anything to drink? Clark Griswold : Honey? I guess I'll have a Coke. Stewardess : Do you want that in the can? Clark Griswold : No, I'll have it right here. I again used this site in the planning of our trip to Chicago for the 4th of July. I must say, that one of the main reasons that I booked this hotel was because It was number six on the list. After visiting the hotel... Im not sure how it got such a good rating.... I would classify this hotel as a solid 3 1/2 star. The lobby was very small and unimpressive. I had reserved a room with a King bed.... but upon arrival, was forced into one with a queen bed. No big deal. The room had A/C but it was limited in how low you could turn it down. I like it cold, so I had to removed the restrictive device. No problem... The room was VERY large. The bed was comfy. and the bathroom was small... But all in all, it was very confortable. The location is outstanding!!!! It is in a great spot, one block from North Michigan Ave. You can walk to many attractions, catch a quick cab or jump on the subway a few blocks away. It is a great spot for shopping or hitting the bars on Rush Street. I would stay here again. I think that if I was traveling with a family the extra room would be perfect. Never intracted with staff so I have no comments.... The staff is exemplary and super-friendly, terrific with young children. Our bedroom suite lacked a door, so our beautiful bed overlooked the sofa bed in which our two children slept. A bit odd, though the room was spacious. Yes, the furniture was a bit sparse and beaten, and, yes again, the bathrooms are cramped and in need of renovation. All in all, the hotel is nice, but if it isn't updated soon, it will really begin to show the wear and tear (others apparently already feel that time has arrived). The location is unbeatable and the hotel offers a pool (that could be cleaned more) for its guests; my children loved the opportunity to swim. I, too, was amazed by the relatively quiet of the rooms at night, though some ambulances can be heard. The elevators are small and they, like the halls, are not air-conditioned, though the rooms were super climate-comfortable! I would recommend this hotel to others, but I also would look to try out some other Chicago hotels on my next visits, which we do three times a year. Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to visit the Irish bar downstairs, though my wife said it was beautiful. Traveler rating: Chicago: Fitzpatrick Chicago Hotel : "Fitzpatrick could be much better" Jul 8, 2005 : A TripAdvisor Member, hollywood, florida Compare prices with: I was a little disappointed in the outward appearance of the hotel. The picture on the website made it appear more grand. The lobby was unremarkable and the furniture had seen much much better days. There were two people only at the small front desk and they seeemed rather stressed as the phones were ringing non-stop. The room was huge, undoutedly must be one of the largest rooms in Downtown. I liked the layout. You opened the door into a waiting/foyer area, then stepped down into the living area. To the right was the bedroom and then bathroom and then another area to do whatever. The living room was spartanly furnished -- however it had its own smaLL television housed in a display unit. The carpet was worn -- apparently from too much cleaning, which in itself is not too much of bad thing. The spread had two cigarette burns in it, yuck. For such a huge room, the bathroom is rather small and not modern. All in all, with updating and an eclectic infusion, these rooms could become one of the best in Chicago. We stayed in the Fitzpatrick hotel in June of this year. We got a very warm Irish welcome when we arrived which lasted throughout our entire stay. The staff were very friendly and helpful. There was a good mix of Irish and American staff which was great. The hotels rooms are larger than what one would expect for a downtown hotel in the heart of the city which was a pleasant surprise. Fitzers bar in the basement was excellent - the food is great and the craic is mighty!! The hotel is within minutes walk of all the major shopping streets, restaurants, tourist destinations etc. I would highly recommend the Fitzpatrick hotel to both the leisure and business customer! Tulum Mexico Travel Information : TravelYucatan.com Tulum Mexico Travel Information Tulum Mayan Riviera Mexico TULUM MEXICO Tulum Mexico is the combination of a beach [coastline], archeological zone, and town. You could say that there are three distinct zones making up what people commonly refer to as Tulum. TULUM RUINS Tulum ruins are located 130 km south of Cancun. The "Tulum Archeological Zone" is the first distinct zone. You can't miss the ruins driving along Hwy 307 either in a rental vehicle or in a bus/collectivo. There are numerous signs and there is a big pink hotel on the corner. Tulum ruins are approximately 1 km down a road towards the coast. There is a large market there as well as a few fast food restaurants. Along the road towards the ruins on your immediate right is where the Mayan Pole Flyers do their pole flying. They perform throughout the day and you can sit and watch. Tulum ruins has one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. You can jump in the water at Tulum ruins and swim north to Boca Paila [we have done this]. TULUMS HOTELS For current Tulum hotel and resort information including rates, availability and secure on-line reservations please see: Tulum Hotels and Resorts Cancun Airport to Tulum Transfer Information TULUM PHOTOS Click on Image to Enlarge Restaurants Restaurant Main 307 Strip Mini Super Tulum Taqueria Maya at Ruins Ruins Beach North Ruins Beach South Tulum Ruins Beach TULUM BEACH Boca Paila has yet to be invaded by the all-inclusive resorts and remains as one of the last popular bastions of hedonistic culture in the Riviera. Along the beach you find inexpensive cabana's for rent [no reservation needed] and the odd drink stand/BBQ joint. Clothing is optional. Snorkeling along the coast here is not that good. Lots of sand and weeds. Tulum Beach can be accessed through a number of points. You can walk in via the road that takes you to the ruins. Just keep following the road south when it hits the ruins. This same road takes you to the Sian Kaan Biosphere and Punta Allen. You can access the beach by walking through an opening or access point from the road. There is also access at Tulum Pueblo. TULUM PUEBLO Tulum Pueblo is either a small city or a large town; it is hard to say. This is where many of the locals live who work in the nearby resorts and hotels. Many support workers such as bus drivers and construction workers live here as well. It is a diverse population with everything from computer programmers to dive instructors. You enter Tulum Pueblo on Hwy 307. Along the highway is the tourista zona and there is shop after shop selling everything and anything. Lots of tortilla stands, restaurants, pharmacies and other kinds of stores. There are dive shops, tour companies, car rental agencies but no bank or bank machine, go figure. The closest bank machine is at Hacienda Isabela [Bahia Principe Resort]. Off of the highway are residential streets with people living in houses and businesses. BUS INFORMATION There are two bus terminals in Tulum, one near the Pemex station, open to the public from 9: 00 to 18: 00 hrs. The other is located in town and is open 24hrs. Both provide first & second class bus service. The collectivo also stops in town on Hwy 307. You can take the collectivo from Tulum to Playa del Carmen for 15 pesos. TAXI There are 2 main taxi stands. Just look for the line up of taxis. Usually you do not have to look for a taxi as they are constantly driving by looking for fares. TOURIST INFORMATION / POLICE The Police station as well as the library, the Mayor's Office and the Tourist Information Office are located beside the baseball field. The Post Office is located on the main avenue [Hwy 307].
