FREE Newsletter. Sign Up Now! April 06, 2005 Cheap Travel Credit Card Scam PandaLabs has issued an alert involving cheap travel sites that are really sites designed to steal your credit card info. Don't get taken by these scams - read the alert and familiarize yourself with the tactics used. Panda Software Warns Online Shoppers to be Careful - New Scam Designed to Steal Credit Card Information Several websites have been identified offering cheap airline tickets with the aim of stealing credit card details from users Even though these sites have been identified and disabled, it is likely that others will appear offering all kinds of products Panda Software advises users to purchase from trusted sites and avoid giveaway prices Glendale, CA - April 6 2005 - Panda Software is warning users about the appearance of a new kind of online fraud. During the last few hours, several websites have been detected that try to entice users with the offer of cheap flights. However the real aim of these web pages is not to sell anything, but to get users to enter their credit card details which will then fall into the hands of cyber-crooks. The scam starts when an unsuspecting user searches for airline ticket offers with an Internet search engine, such as Google. This takes them to an Internet address offering cheap flights. The site includes a form asking the user to enter personal details, including their credit card number, expiry date and verification value (CVV). Once these details have been entered, to prolong the illusion, an error page is displayed telling the user that the transaction has been unsuccessful, and offering instructions on how to pay for the ticket by postal money order. This, in fact, means that the user could actually fall victim to the fraud twice. Firstly, through sending the criminals details of a valid credit card, with which they can carry out all kinds of transactions (transfers, payments...) and then, in addition, they could lose the money if they were to send the requested amount by money order. Until now, the websites identified -which had been disabled by the authorities- offered airline tickets, but it is highly likely that there will be many others offering any other type of "bargain" with the same objective. According to Luis Corrons, director of PandaLabs, This kind of online fraud differs from those witnessed previously. The malicious user does not contact the person interested in buying the product, but it is actually the buyer, in searching for the best prices online, who goes to the fraudulent web page. This creates a false sense of security that can lead users to proceed with the transaction. To avoid this kind of fraud Users are best advised to treat "bargains" with suspicion, and only make online purchases from trusted sites. In any event, if in doubt, it is a good idea to search for information about the website in question on the Internet. Users should be able to find opinions and experiences of other users who have used the same service, adds Corrons. The authorities have been alerted to this kind of threat and IT security companies are collaborating to protect and inform users of the dangers of this new Internet fraud. Bariloche is a great winter destination as long as you enjoy snow and skiing. It might get a little crowded by end of July/first of August because of school vacations but in general, Bariloche is a fairly big city, so... As for Mendoza, some excursions are high altitude so here it too you may experience very cold weather and snow. If you are comfortable with it, Mendoza is a great place to visit and July will just be fine. All three destinations will be hot. Average temperature for Iguazu during the month of Feb. is 80 F, but there are at least an average of 15 days when temperatures are above 90F. In addition, this place will be very humid. In Salta, temperatures are a bit lower as well as humidity. Rain is similar in both areas. Jan and Feb are the rainy month in Salta. Only 11 days average are above 78F in Salta. Many excursions here might involve altitude so you may experience and even cooler weather. As for Buenos Aires, it will also be hot and humid but I doubt as much as Iguazu. Temperatures may hover around the 88/90F but some days may feel specially hot. What did the conflicting reports said? I think this can be done on your own provided you do some homework. El Chalten is *very* small and therefore lacks infraestructure. Although high season is January/February, March is bound to be busy so if you plan to just arrive and find yourself at home you will be for a shock. There are at least 100+ rooms inventory available in dozens of cabins/hostels and small accomodations but during the busy season that may not be much. Bear in mind El Chalten is very isolated and to reach it you will need to drive approximately 220 km from the nearest place -El Calafate- to where you will arrive by plane. This drive is lengthy because the road is composed of pebbles. As you can see traveling by yourself will require planning. There are trails available both for the beginner and the seasoned trekker. Trails may last 1 hour to 7 hours or more and they may involve different levels of difficulty. Most of them are easy and enjoyable. I think you can hike at least a dozen or so trails that have been well mapped. You can do this by yourself and arrange accomodations in advance, but once there your first action should be to approach the information desk at Parque Nacional Los Glaciares to become acquainted with the rules and regulations for visiting the area. There are buses every day from Calafate to El Chalten. Departing in the morning at around 8am and returning to Calafate at around 10pm (departing from El Chalten at 6pm). You should spend at least one night in Calafate in order to take the bus to El Chalten. The drive is approximately 4 hours (for 215 kms). El Chalten is not *too* remote at all, just small. If you reach Calafate it will be a shame not to make it to El Chalten. I would not know the price for the bus ticket. I would not know either how Calafate trekking compares to Chalten trekking. This can only be known if done. Mexico is a multifaceted tourist paradise, with landscapes of every description, from wild deserts to monstrous mountains, superb beaches ranging from action-packed sand to stretches devoid of packaged life forms, chart-topping ancient Maya sites, wild and colourful festivals, wild and colourful wildlife, terrific weather if you get your timing right, excellent public transport systems, excellent undersea life on one coast and great surfing on the other, good food and booze, pleasant colonial towns, and all at a very reasonable price. Downside: - It's perhaps not quite as colourful as the myth of Mexico might suggest. It's a big country so some towns and landscapes can be dull. - Banditry and thievery are not a myth. - Handicraft quality has gone down the tubes. - Worst of all many Mexicans are resolutely uncommunicative [unless you've got $ in your hand] and taxi drivers in particular are a disgrace. However! Good handicrafts and people seem to have travelled out to the coastal resorts...try Mexico City and find out why! Where to travel in Mexico: *** Chichen Itza. A sensational Maya pyramid and many other strange and interesting structures in large expanse of greenery. Stay 2 nights nearby and do it properly. ***Oaxaca, a relaxed, pretty town with a lovely main square and the ancient Zapotec site of Monte Alban nearby. A great location for Dia de los Muertos festivities. **Merida , another pleasant colonial town, with agreeable daily free concerts and dance, good restaurants. A couple of days? Not too far from Uxmal. ***Uxmal, a good warmup for Chichen Itza: a pleasing and unusually rounded pyramid with other varied Maya buildings. A day trip. ***Palenque , a really wild Maya place; terrific but difficult to get to. Small plane, [new train line?] or looong bus travel. **Playa del Carmen [near Cancun] for a cool, casual beach scene and excellent bars/restaurants/shops. Also the Pacific Coast, from **Puerto Vallarta to **Puerto Escondido has great beaches and facilities. *Cancun for 5 star beaches with little culture. **Acapulco , a lively 20 mile bay of beaches, bars and hotels that has entertained Elvis, Sinatra and Kerouac but still has space for budget travellers. A bit brash and busy, but quiet spots survive, as do most of the famous [45m/148ft] cliff divers at La Quebrada. **Mexico City. Visit excellent museums, see superb murals at the Palacio Nacional, and frolic in the Zocalo. Also day trips out to : The grand Teotihuacan pyramids, and the 'living colonial museum' of Puebla. **Barranca [Canyon] del Cobre. A stunning 6 hour train ride from Los Mochis on the Pacific coast up the mountains to Divisadero or Creel drops you on the edge of Mexico's Copper Canyon. Good hiking but trails are not well marked. Travel Safety: Mexico City and some large towns endure fairly high levels of crime, most of it petty, but armed robbery and even rape is not unknown. As usual take special care in busy places like bus and metro stations, when using ATMs and at night. Green taxis are better avoided if possible as they have been implicated in serious assaults.
