Hotel City Search : Republic of China Following most of Chinese mainland's occupation by Communist armies, General Chiang Kai-shek moved the Nationalist government of China's headquarters to T'ai-pei, on December 8, 1949. During the 1950s, the United States vowed to take military action against the Chinese mainland if Communist forces attacked Taiwan or the Pescadores. With extended financial and military aid from the US, during the early 1960s, Taiwan was able to build its economy. The mainlanders who had taken refuge in 1949 continued to dominate the political stage, but Taiwan was becoming isolated as countries sought to strengthen ties with the larger market in mainland China. Neither of the Chinese governments would have formal relations with any nation recognising the other. The Democratic Progressive party (DPP) continue to campaign for Taiwan's independence from mainland China, while Beijing threatens military action if this ever happens. The People's Republic of China claim Taiwan as one of its provinces and some native Taiwanese resent the claims. Posturing and flexing of navy muscle is not uncommon in the South China Sea . Language and Culture The official language of Taiwan is Mandarin, although other Chinese dialects are also spoken. The Taiwanese are mostly descendants of the Chinese who emigrated from Fujian and Guangdong provinces during the 18th and 19th centuries. The Taiwanese celebrate many ancient Chinese customs and holidays, especially the Dragon Boat Festival, the Mid-Autumn Festival, and the Feast of Lanterns. Taipei You can also call it T'ai-pei or Taibei; whatever, it's the provisional capital of the Republic of China, or Taiwan. Located on the Tanshui River, near the north coast of Taiwan, you will fly into T'aoyan International Airport. Immigrants from mainland China's Fujian Province first settled here in the 18th century, but not a lot was happening. The Japanese brought sushi to the island between 1895 and 1945, until they surrendered the island to China after World War II. Alexander's Taiwan Travel Page : Alex and Carrie have made a few trips to Taiwan. Here's the resulting travelogues; with photographs, recommended restaurants and related links. Taipei Sightseeing Among all the neon light, there are some Buddhist shrines of interest in the city. The Memorial Hall to Chiang Kai-Shek is a large white marble structure with an enormous blue-tiled roof, surrounded by an impressive garden. Museums : The National Palace Museum contains Chinese art treasures from the 2nd millennium BC to the 20th century, and the Hwa Kang Museum has displays of folk and modern Chinese art. T'ai-nan The Chinese pirate, Koxinga, made the city his capital due to its convenient position on the south-west of the island. It remained the capital of the island until 1885, when the government was transferred to T'ai-pei. By staying at the headquarters hotel, you not only help us keep registration fees low, but you also get valuable discounts on local attractions and on in-room connectivity . By contracting rooms for our attendees, we significantly reduce hotel charges for meeting room rental. When those sleeping rooms are not occupied, we face significant financial penalties. Those penalties ultimately force us to raise registration fees. With costs going higher and higher, we are working hard to negotiate the very best hotel rates for you and to keep other conference expenses down, in order to keep registration fees as low as possible. We appreciate your help in this endeavor. TRAVEL Airports Anaheim's location in the Los Angeles metropolitan area makes it easily accessible by air. (Also known as excess in UK, NZ, AU) This is the amount that the insured must pay before the travel insurance provider starts paying. This may be an annual amount, an amount for the duration of the policy, or an amount for each incident. Travel Protection vs Travel Medical Travel Insurance Protection plans typically reimburse your non-reimbursed travel expenses if an emergency occurs causing your trip to be canceled, interrupted or delayed. Travel Medical insurance is medical insurance designed to reimburse you for medical expenses incurred while traveling. Why do I need travel insurance? You can begin your trip without any travel insurance and be self insured. But did you know that if you become ill abroad the costs to treat you could be very high. How would you find a doctor? Where would you find appropriate healthcare facility? Where would you seek advice? Did you know that HMO's, PPO's and Medicare typically do not cover you abroad? Why buy travel insurance from us? Most tour / cruise operators and insurance companies sell travel insurance plans from a single company only. TravelInsuranceCenter allows you are able to compare prices of all major travel insurance companies and select a travel insurance plan that best suits your needs. What if my travel supplier declares Bankruptcy? Many travel insurance protection plans cover lost travel expenses due to travel supplier bankruptcy, but there are substantial differences among plans. Some travel insurance plans only cover a specified list of travel suppliers, others require that you purchase the insurance within 7-14 days of paying the initial trip deposit. Be sure to check plan details What is Travel Insurance? Travel insurance, also know as trip insurance, trip cancellation insurance and trip interruption insurance protects a traveler's vacation cost against cancellation, interruption and delay while also providing medical, lost or damaged property coverage. Researching travel insurance products can be confusing. That is why we built our Policy Picker to help you easily compare prices and benefits of several travel insurance plans.
