FREE Newsletter. Sign Up Now! My favorite "undiscovered" European vacation spots It's fine to visit the European capitals. They're all big enough to sop up a glut of tourists. But smaller places that are both uniquely interesting and lightly traveled are getting more difficult to find and often seem amazingly ethereal: travel is so easy today that Rick Steves' back doors stop becoming back doors the minute he mentions them. So my favorite places aren't undiscovered--they're just a bit too far off the beaten track for the mega-tourism companies to worry about. Meteora - Greece Monastic history starts in Meteora in the 11th century when the first hermits sought peace and solitude in the rifts and caves in the isolated pinnacles that rise above the valley of the Pineios (Pinios) river. By the 14th century the Byzantine Empire was coming apart at the seams and the monastic communities of the Athos peninsula were always in danger of Turkish pirate raids and other persecution. After one such encounter, three monks went searching for a rather inaccessible home to avoid it all. They eventually settled on top of a rock called Stylos . Endowments and people followed, and an amazing community of 24 monasteries built pinnacles on was born. Everything got hoisted up (and down) by nets, even people. And the toilets? Off the cliffs went the waste--all of it. Today, a paved road winds between the largest monasteries. The most spectacular vistas in all of Europe are just around the bend. Bring plenty of film. Meteora means "suspended in air" and they mean it. You can find a hotel in Kalambaka and walk to the monasteries from there if you're reasonably fit--Kalambaka is 9kms from the monasteries. There are busses, tours, and taxis as well. Close by: Metsovo, a small community of excellent woodcarvers is just to the northwest of Kalambaka. Much of the really fine carving you'll see in the monasteries comes from the carvers of Metsovo, but if you go to Metsovo (easy by bus) you can buy carvings made for tourists as well. When to go: Spring or Fall to avoid crowds. Yes, this is a place that's "discovered" but remote. Late fall works well, although it'll be cold in the morning, and downright freezing in Metsovo, higher up in the mountains. Still, this allows you to taste Greece's "other" cooking, the hearty and warming stews you don't get in summer. More: Meteora is one of the Great Walks of Europe Also see: Meteora Pictures | Meteora Travel Directory Cathar Country - France I was at a party just before embarking on my first European vacation in the 70's when I asked a French guy I'd just met what his favorite city in Europe was. He answered "Carcassonne," a walled city smack in the heart of Cathar country. By golly, he was right, Carcassonne is definitely worth a day or two in itself. But I've since made a recent trip back to the area and discovered many other interesting things to see in the Aude region--except for tourists--and it was the middle of the season. What's here? Castles perched high on hilltops, the mysteries of Rennes le Chateau, great sparkling wine called Blanquette de Limoux, and great walking trails. Plus, Cathar country is easy on your wallet; the Aude is one of France's poorest areas and lodging is relatively cheap and plentiful. What's nearby: Provence isn't far, and if you're driving it's a great "next stop." More: Cathar Country Travel Directory | Rennes le Chateau | The Best Cathar Castles to Visit Asturias - Spain Northern Spain is ignored by many American tourists, yet it's one of the places I'd go back again and again. Some of the attractions are righfully famous, including the prehistoric painted cave called Altamira--the "Sistine Chapel of Prehistoric Art". The country around the Picos de Europa range is some of the most beautiful in Europe. Lodging options include nice historic country inns called Posadas, as well as Casa Rurales--rural houses that will allow you to slow down your vacation and see the countryside at a leisurely pace. This is a rural area that preserves its history and way of life in a way that can be attractive to tourists looking to discover a beautiful solitude. Have a cider, some of the local blue cheese called Cabrales, and contemplate a trip to one of the regions prehistoric caves--or a walk along the pilgrimage route passing through the pretty port town of Ribadesella. When to Go: Tempered by the cool Bay of Biscay to the north, Northern Spain doesn't sweltering in the summer, usually. Don't be afraid of going in the high season, although we did witness some incredible thunder storms in July. Did it stop us? Nope--we just dragged a chair out under the covered patio of our casa rurale , got out a camera and some cheese and bread, and watched nature's finest display of natural fireworks. Incredible. Depending on the length of your trip I'd recommend spending time in Buenos Aires -the capital of Argentina- and also in Iguazu Falls , about 700 miles north of Buenos Aires. Visiting Iguazu is economical. A three night package that includes air fare, lodging in a 5 stars hotel , all transfers and breakfasts, plus 3 excursions is about $480 USD per person (pricing may vary at the time of booking due to availability and may differ from May 2005 prices). In Buenos Aires, there are many things to do , including outdoor activities such as visiting ranches and learning about Gauchos ' life. Not to mention getting acquainted with tango and other forms of traditional argentine music like malambo . Perhaps 4 nights in Buenos Aires and 3 nights in Iguazu may do for a nice one week vacation, but this is just but one alternative. For more accurate pricing on specific destinations in Argentina, we usually require: - Approximate date of traveling. - Length of trip. - Main destinations you would like to visit. - Number of people traveling. There are 7 main regions that visitors like to see. In order of how much they cost they are as follows, from cheaper to most expensive: 1) Buenos Aires (capital). Lots of attractions: tango , ranches and gauchos . Buenos Aires lifestyle: shopping, hanging out and best steaks in the World. 2) Iguazu Falls in Misiones province (The Iguazu Falls, jungle trips, Wanda mines, San Ignacio Jesuits ruins, etc). Many times, this visit will include crossing the border into Brazil for which american citizens are required a visa. Iguazu Falls, sometimes called Iguassu, are known because of their enourmous water beds and heights. 3) Mendoza (west of Argentina, Andes ridge): wine tours, mountains, horse riding, white water rafting , many parks and museums . Probably, the 'greenest' province in Argentina for its many parks and flowers. During winters, Mendoza is also a well known destination for its ski center Las Leas . 4) Northwest: Salta , Jujuy and Tucuman provinces. Ravines and high altitude trips. In touch with Incas past history. Salta is of special note. It's building city codes only allow facades to resemble the colonial period so a visitor will find an enchanted place with an old flair to it, a spanish one. In Salta it is also possible to do some great trout fly fishing 5) Peninsula Valdes (in Patagonia , Chubut province). Animals in the wild: sea lions, penguins, orcas, large amount of birds species. When in season, there are guided whale watching trips . If you are into fly fishing , west of Chubut -in a town called Trevelin, the Rio Pico region- there are some of the most sought after river streams in the World for trout fishing . 6) Bariloche (southwest of Argentina in Rio Negro province, like a ski community). Spectacular scenery and unforgettable southern lakes . Bariloche is the largest southern city in Argentina with over half a million people and is house of Cerro Catedral , where great skiing is possible. 7) Glaciers (includes Calafate in Santa Cruz province and Ushuaia in Tierra del Fuego province). Most travelers take a combo Calafate/Ushuaia for about 5 nights. This is a gorgeous trip. One caveat, Argentina is large. It is the 8th largest country in the world and 4th in South America. Distances are long and logistics for traveling are not sometimes easy. So choosing too many destinations in a short span will not work. Flight connections will make you waste a lot of time in airports. One last thing. At the time of this writing -February 2005-, Argentina is still very cheap and has a very favorable rate of exchange. In particular for Europeans. So you will probably be happy visiting us, making the most of your precious travel monies. Meals and cabs are very cheap. A very nice filet mignon (almost a pound) with french fries may be around 6 bucks. Depending on the restaurant, add one more dollar. Yes, you read correctly. I was there last December. I hope this brief commentary on why you should consider traveling to Argentina sparks your desire for the 'unknown' or for traveling to a place you have never considered before. Merger Stories: Behind The Scenes and More Category: General The past 48 hours here at About Weblogs has certainly been interesting, what with the announcement of the merger with b5media and all. I'm trying not to keep going on about this, but I've been receiving some questions from different people. And, as an avid blogger, I often prefer to go to my own blog when answering "official" questions - using my own words. At least, in this case, I think it's the way to go anyway. :-) In any case, one of the more "controversial" things that came out of the announcement is Scrivs's admission that his network is the one that first approached me and About Weblogs. About Weblogs Merges with b5media Category: News and Announcements Yes, it's true. Our network is merging with b5media . The official announcement is also posted at The Blog Herald . Some people might think that I hinted about this merger last month. Truth is, I was talking about a different merger that time. I wasn't even in contact with the b5 guys back then about the possibility of merging. Another network owner has approached me a couple of months ago about merging About Weblogs with their network. But, as I said in my post, things didn't quite work out. A week or so after I posted the entry on mergers, Jeremy contacted me for a Skype chat. What they had to offer sounded good, so I said I'd think about it and talk to my bloggers about the possibility of a deal. As soon as we entered in to negotiations, I received another possible offer for a merger. I couldn't respond to that, as I was already talking to the b5 guys and it didn't seem fair. After a couple of weeks of negotiations, we came to the final conclusion that About Weblogs and b5media are a good fit. So, we sealed the deal. And now, we're here. Excited about the possibilities of this new partnership. In Darren's post , he mentioned the following reasons as b5's reasons for choosing About Weblogs: International Flavour, Size and Diversity of Blogs , Gender (er, you have to read his post to understand this ), and Shais (yep, that's me ;-)) Experience and Expertise. But, of course, apart from us bringing something to b5's table, I believe that they're bringing something to us too. Darren, Duncan and Jeremy's experience and expertise combined is a lot more than my own as an individual. Running a network by myself has plenty of challenges and limitations. Now, I have three wonderful guys to work with - and that's fantastic. In terms of traffic, exposure, and resources - b5media considerably has more than what About Weblogs has got at this time. So, those are welcome additions too. I can probably go on, but I think I'll stop now, as I'm sure that there will be more about this merger in the next couple of weeks or so. What does this mean to About Weblogs and where do we go from here? 1) About Weblogs will cease as a blog network brand, as soon as the merger is complete. We will then be known as b5media. 2) Each About Weblogs blog will now have new designs and domains of their own. We will be announcing each one as they find and establish their new "homes". 3) Apart from the pre-approved blogs that we have prior to the merger, we won't be adding any more blogs to the About Weblogs brand from hereon. So, blogger applications will now be put on hold and re-directed to b5media. 4) I will become the fourth partner in the b5media core/admin group, together with Jeremy Wright ( ensight.org ), Darren Rowse ( problogger.net ), and Duncan Riley ( blogherald.com ). We're looking forward to all the changes that will be happening here. I hope you will be thrilled for us too. In any case, we'll be updating you with any other news and developments. AboutWeblogs Down Time Category: News and Announcements First of all, our big apologies to everyone who's been trying to access our network in the last few hours. During the last couple of weeks, the About Weblogs Network has been receiving more visitors than ever. In fact, our traffic has increased more than 50% lately. And, it looks like we're not slowing down yet either. We're especially excited with all the Google-loving that we've been receiving. SEO work does pay off. :-) Unfortunately, we're not ready for our increased popularity. So, we exceeded our bandwidth allotment and our host had to take our weblogs down. A "happy problem" - but a problem nevertheless. So, after a little bit of hair-pulling for a few hours, we've sorted it out. And, thanks to some good folks who helped us out, we've now increased our bandwidth - and disk space. Thanks for all your patience and support! Here's to hoping for more happy problems ahead... On Blogging Network Mergers Category: Network Check-ups and Stories Okay, I'm breaking some of my rules today: 1) I'm writing a cryptic title and blog entry. (A general no-no.) 2) I'm engaging in a bit of blogosphere gossip. (I'm not a big fan of 'em. But then, this isn't comletely gossip, as it really happened.) 3) I'm posting something not too serious in this network blog for once. (A good thing, once in a while, methinks. ;-)) So, what am I talking about anyway? Well... Since I haven't posted any network news for a while now, I thought I'd share a "news that could've been" here at AboutWeblogs.com. You see, a few months back, a blogging network owner approached me with an idea: To merge AboutWeblogs.com with their then-growing (now, quite popular) weblog network. We were still to run as separate blog networks, but we would combine our strengths as two "fledgling" networks to create a bigger, more competitive blogging network. After all, what are the chances of little blog networks against the "big boys and girls of the blogosphere"? So yes, a merger sounded good. However, there were a couple of issues that needed to be addressed. I ran it past my wonderful network bloggers and most of them said that they'd support whatever my decision would be. It was a tough call because it definitely sounded like a great deal. I respected the network and the network owner. But, the issues were not addressed at the time, so I politely declined. I didn't hear back since. Not even a "That's okay. Maybe we can look at this again another time," kinda' email. So, I'm not sure how my decision affected that particular blogging relationship. Strangely enough, after I made that decision, that network made a policy change, which would've addressed one of the biggest issues that we were facing if we were to merge as a network. And, when that change took place, I asked myself: If that new policy was in place during our negotiations, would we have continued with merging our networks? And, with new blogging networks popping up like mushrooms everywhere, would blogging network mergers become a reality? And if so, how would blog network owners handle such mergers? Hmmm...
