But with thoughtful preparation, you can ensure a safe and comfortable trip for everyone. The ASPCA urges pet owners to think twice about flying their pets on commercial airlines, especially if they plan on checking them in as cargo. The Air Transport Association has reported that in the past, approximately 5,000 pets—or 1 percent of the companion animals are flown on commercial planes—have been injured, lost or killed during transport. "Unless your animal is small enough to fit under your seat and you can bring him or her in the cabin, the ASPCA recommends pet owners to not fly their animal," says Lisa Weisberg, ASPCA Senior Vice President of Government Affairs and Public Policy. If pet owners have already committed to transporting their pets on commercial airlines, the ASPCA is offering the following top ten tips for safe air travel with your pet: 1. Make an appointment with your pet's veterinarian for a check-up, and make sure all vaccinations are up-to-date. Obtain a health certificate from your veterinarian dated within 10 days of departure. 2. Make sure your pet is wearing a collar and an identification tag. Breakaway collars are best for cats. The collar should also include destination information in case your pet escapes. 3. Book a direct flight whenever possible. This will decrease the chances that your pet is left on the tarmac during extreme weather conditions or mishandled by baggage personnel. 4. Purchase a USDA-approved shipping crate that is large enough for your pet to stand, sit and turn around in comfortably. Shipping crates can be purchased from many pet supply stores and airlines. 5. Write the words "Live Animal" in letters at least one inch tall on top of and at least one side of the crate. Use arrows to prominently indicate the upright position of the crate. On the top of the crate, write the name, address and telephone number of your pet's destination point, and whether you will be accompanying him or if someone else is picking him up. Make sure that the door is securely closed, but not locked, so that airline personnel can open it in case of an emergency. Line the crate bottom with some type of bedding—shredded paper or towels— to absorb accidents. 6. Affix a current photograph of your pet to the top of the crate for identification purposes. Should your pet escape from the carrier, this could be a lifesaver. You should also carry a photograph of your pet. 7. The night before you leave, make sure you’ve frozen a small dish or tray of water for your pet. This way, it can’t spill during loading, and will melt by the time he’s thirsty. Tape a small pouch, preferably cloth, of dried food outside the crate. Airline personnel will be able to feed your pet in case he gets hungry on long-distance flights or a layover. 8. Tranquilizing your pet is generally not recommended, as it could hamper his breathing. Check with your veterinarian first. 9. Tell every airline employee you encounter, on the ground and in the air, that you are traveling with a pet in the cargo hold. This way, they’ll be ready if any additional considerations or attention is needed. 10. If the plane is delayed, or if you have any concerns about the welfare of your pet, insist that airline personnel check the animal whenever feasible. In certain situations, removing the animal from the cargo hold and deplaneing may be warranted. | Powered By Convio Print | Tell A Friend | Contact | Site Map | Legal Info | Jobs | 2005 The ASPCA

Set in dense rainforest with trees reaching heights of 50 metres and more, they are also home to an enormous variety of animal and plant life. Since the demise of the Mayan Empire in about 800AD, the jungle has taken back the land, with just a few towers of the sacrificial temples looming above the forest canopy... Fuentes Georginas Soak away your worries in volcanic springs in Guatemala's Western Highlands. Fuentes Georginas in Zunil is a gem. These springs nestle in the Western Highlands, about 25km south of Quetzaltenango, and nearly a mile and a half above sea level. Copn Ruinas (Ruins) The Copn Ruinas (ruins) are the jewel of the Mayan kingdom in Honduras. The spectacular ruins date back to around 1000 BC and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lake Atitlan The late Aldous Huxley thought that Lake Atitlan beat Lake Como hands down. Fringed by dormant volcanoes and mountains, this mammoth natural pool (18km by 12km at its widest) has a life of its own. Hundreds who visit it are destined to return and even the most unromantic of types admit to its magic. La Quebrada Cliff Divers A trip to Acapulco would not be complete without a visit to La Quebrada. Every day divers voluntarily put their lives at risk here as they skilfully dive from the dizzying height of up to 45m metres into the sea below, an inlet only seven metres wide and four metres deep. Palacio de Bellas Artes The Palacio de Bellas Artes is the most important performing arts venue in the capital, and a fine example of early 20th-century architecture. Cabaas Hospital A landmark of the Mexican city of Guadalajara, the Hospicio Cabaas was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The chapel is decorated with a superb series of murals by the famous Mexican artist Jos Clemente Orozco, and includes his astonishing El Hombre del Fuego . Xel-Ha With its never-ending network of interconnected lagoons, natural pools, creeks, islands and caves, the tropical water park of Xel-Ha will enchant all water-babies. Less keen swimmers, meanwhile, cannot fail to be bowled over by the park's natural beauty. Tulum Tulum, or the "City of Dawn", is the Yucatan Peninsula's most popular Mayan archaeological site, and deservedly so. Clamber through the narrow stone arch entrance and the ruins of an entire city greet you. Xcaret Self-labelled as "eco-archaeological", Xcaret is probably best descibed as a natural theme park. Encompassing beaches, butterfly houses, a coral reef aquarium and an underground river excursion, it is geared more towards families than those seeking seclusion. Its picturesque qualities, however, can't be denied. FREE Newsletter. Sign Up Now! Russia Travel Guide Whether you're traveling across borders or from city to city, Russia has transportation options to get there. Airlines A number of airlines provide international flights to Russia, including the national airline Aeroflot that flies domestically and internationally. Also see this list of airlines of the new independent states of the former USSR. Airports There are three airports serving international flights to Moscow. The one you will fly to depends on the airline you use. The main other airports in Russia are also listed below. Moscow: Sheremetyevo-2 - SVO - is the city's main international airport, located 35 km northwest of the city. Moscow: Vnukovo -VKO- is an international airport located 11 km from the city. Moscow: Domodedovo is a modern international airport increasingly attracting travel. St. Petersburg: Pulkovo - LED. Ekaterinburg: Koltsovo - SVX. Kirovsk/Apatity - KVK. Novosibirsk: Tolmachevo - OVB. Rostov na Donu For transportation from the airport to your accommodations, your options are to take a taxi, a shuttle, or public transportation, unless you are fortunate enough to have someone pick you up. While public transportation is the least expensive, luggage makes this choice not always practical. If you want to take a taxi, ignore anyone by the airport doors trying to give you a ride and go to the taxi line outside. You can order a taxi before you arrive with WaytoRussia.net . Many of the larger hotels offer shuttle service to and from the airport. Depending on the city, taxis can cost from $10-$25 to get you to your destination. Trains There are several types of long-distance trains in Russia: High-speed trains (skorostnoj poezd'). These trains, numbered 161-169, travel at about 100 km per hour and have comfortable amenities. Fast trains (skorry poezd'). These trains, which are reasonably comfortable, are numbered 1-160 and stop only at major stations. Firm fast trains (firmeny poezd'). These trains are included with the group above but the "firmeny" indication means they have additional service, including cleaner cars, for which you will pay about 10 percent more. These trains include the Rossia that travels from Moscow to Vladivostok and the Krasnaya Strella from Moscow to St. Petersburg. Passenger train (passazhersky poezd'). These trains are numbered 170-870, travel more slowly than the other trains listed above, and make many stops. For long-distance routes, you can choose from options that approximate first, second and third class seating. Sleeping cars (first class) have two sleeping berths per compartment plus a small washbasin, and the toilets at the ends of the cars are usually clean(er). Kupes (second class) have four berths per compartment and the toilets are less desirable. Bring your own paper and disposable wipes. Platzkart (third class) has 54 berths per car. For a timetable of trains across Russia and the CIS, see Poezda.net . To buy your tickets, you can order them before you even leave for Russia by using an online travel service or a travel agent. You can buy your tickets in Russia at the train station, a railway agency office, or a travel agent. Express Coaches/ Buses You can get to Russia by bus and you can also get around Russia by bus. Inside Russia, you can travel very cheaply by bus from city to city (and to remote areas not served by trains) but the vehicles are not comfortable and usually are crowded (because they are cheap.) You'll certainly meet Russians this way, but without knowledge of the Russian language, you will face difficulties. You can buy tickets at the bus station but be prepared for a long wait. The situation is different traveling internationally by bus. A number of private firms have very comfortable coach buses, and fares are usually cheaper than airfare, even when traveling from western Europe. Major coach companies are: Eurolines . Connects you to 25 European countries. Berlin Linien Bus - German-language site. This line takes you from western Europe to European Russia. Beetroot Backpackers . Backpackers will enjoy the prices and fun with this low-priced bus option.
