Featured vacation location: Vail In 1874, miners looking to get-rich-quick came to the Vail area after the news spread that the area was rich in gold and silver. Once dependent on mining this area is now a renowned for excellent skiing, although it is a four season destination with plenty of outdoor activities available in the summer months too. Vail itself is a quaint Bavarian-style traffic-free village. Everywhere you go, you'll find chic cafés, coffee shops, art galleries, and of course scenic views of the surrounding mountains and highlands. In the cities, narrow twisting old streets suddenly open out to views of daring modern architecture, while spit-and-sawdust bars serving wine from the barrel rub shoulders with blaring, glaring discos. Travel is easy, accommodation plentiful, the climate benign, the people relaxed, the beaches long and sandy, the food and drink easy to come by and full of regional variety. More than 50 million foreigners a year visit Spain, yet you can also travel for days and hear nothing but Spanish. Geographically, Spain's diversity is immense. There are endless tracts of wild and crinkled sierra to explore, as well as some spectacularly rugged stretches of coast between the beaches. Culturally, the country is littered with superb old buildings, from Roman aqueducts and Islamic palaces to Gothic cathedrals. Almost every second village has a medieval castle. Spain has been the home of some of the world's great artists - El Greco, Velzquez, Goya, Dal, Picasso - and has museums and galleries to match. The country vibrates with music of every kind - from the drama of flamenco to the melancholy lyricism of the Celtic music and gaitas (bagpipes) of the northwest. It prides itself on its European feel, modern architecture, plethora of cafes, active nightlife and of course as the home to the tango. The city is well-suited to tourism with plentiful buses, colectivos, a fairly extensive metro system, the subte , and centralized attractions based around plazas in a grid-like layout. The capital city is divided into neighborhoods, barrios , which are detailed below. You should plan a minimum of three - four days to fully enjoy the city, more if nightlife is your thing. Porteños (residents of Buenos Aires) tend to be very well-dressed, even by Latin American standards, and are known for a somewhat cool, elitist attitude. The mountains of North Central America are an extension of the mountain system of Western North America while the ranges of South Central America are outliers of the Andes Mountains of South America. The middle portion of Central America is an active zone of volcanoes and earthquakes; it contains the Nicaragua Depression, which includes lakes Managua and Nicaragua. Tajumulco (4,210 m/13,846 feet), a volcano in Guatemala, is the region's highest peak. Central America's climate varies with altitude from tropical to cool. The eastern side of the region receives heavy rainfall. Bananas, coffee, and cacao are the chief crops of Central America, and gold and silver are mined there. The economies of the countries in the region are becoming increasingly diversified, although agriculture is still the largest employer.
