Caorle continued its history into the Roman era as a natural port for supplying nearby Julia Concordia.The depredations of Attila the Hun in Italy dorve the peoples of Venetia and Friuli to take refuge in these lidos and the town wa probably founded in 452 AD. Today, Caorle offers the visitor an attractive picture, both when viewed from the land and from the sea. These attractions are unique to this area and have made the Venetian coastline renowned worldwide.The coast of Caorle, Porto S. Margherita and Duna Verde has 15 km of beach that slopes gently down to the sea blending sea and sand into a single yellow-azure line that perfectly caters for all the holiday maker's needs. Here we find sunbeds and sunshades, cabins and showers, first aid stations and restaurants as well as hotels and boarding houses of all the different rating, camping sites, holiday villages an self catering accommodation.There are also shopping centres and "botteghe" or traditional shops, fashionable boutiques and elegant icecream parlours, typical restaurants, pizzerias, discos and sea terraces.The lagoon and the valleys are Caorle's great wealth, offering thousands of acres of reed beds and calm stretches of water where nature has remained unspoilt. The great Caorlina festival , the "bragozzi" regattas (Venetian two masted fishing boats). Caorlevivistoria (Caorle's history come alive) and the Fraima festival are events that evoke a past that its inhabitants think back on fondly and which they bring back to life with splendid historical costumes and folklore. Bibione is located in a vast pinewood and has a beach of unparalleled proportions. Bibion developed as holiday resort in the sixities, although archaeological discoveries show that there was already a settlement here in Roman times. Bibione "Tuttaspiaggia" (measureless beaches) has won a name for itself thanks to the lienght and wdth of tis dandy shores on which the sun shines from dawn the dusk. The beaches are full of orderly, colourful rows of sun shades. It offers safe cycle routes, a splendid sea front and a variety of sporting facilities that make it the ideal place for different activities. Its new and highly modern "Bibione Thermae" spa (recognized by the Italian National Health Service) exploits the alkaline bicarbonate-sodiumfluorate waters that gush out at 52 C and offers mud treatment, bathing therapy, inhalation therapy, and physiokinesis therapy; there is also a well equipped gymnasiums as well as a spa park overlooking the sea with covered thermal and open air swimming pools. The Caorle and Bibione's sorroundings offer a good number of different kind of itineraries: Historical-Artistic-Architectural itineraries which include Portogruaro, Villanova, Fratta, Teglio Veneto, Summaga, Fossalta. Portogruaro is the capital of eastern Venetia and is located halfway between Venice and Trieste. This partly Medieval and partly Renaissance town has the river Lemene running through it, which at every turn offers incredibly beautiful views. The heart of the city is Piazza della Repubblica, to which the Town Hall forms a backdrop. This is considered to be the finest Medieval building in Portogruaro, the oldest part of which dates back to the fourteenth century. Some of the building overlooking the two main streets have have porticoes and are magnificient examples of Italian and Venetian Gothic style from the 14th and 15th centuries. At Portogruaro there is the interesting Museo Nazionale Concordiense . It contains many exhibits, which come from the neighbouring Concordia Saggittaria. The Renaissance Villa Marzotto that belongs to the town council is also worth a visit: it boasts a nice park and it houses the M. Gortani Paleontological Museum. Concordia , situated about 3 km south of Portogruaro, was a Roman settlement and boasts a nice Archeological museum and a nice ancient cathedral with its Byzantine baptistery. The area around these historical towns is rich in natural itineraries that will show you the typical cultivation, parks, woods and lake and in vineyards and the D.O.C.Wine-producers (Controlled Denomination of Origin). FREE Newsletter. Sign Up Now! Cologne Location:  Cologne is located in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, along the Rhine river between Dusseldorf and Bonn. Founded by Romans, Cologne is one of Germany's oldest cities. Cologne Population:  The fourth largest city in Germany, Cologne has over 1.8 million people. Cologne Tourist Office:  The Tourist Office is located at Unter Fettenhennen 19, just southwest of the train station. It's open 9 am to 10 pm in summer, and 9 am to 9 pm in winter, except for Sundays and public holidays, when it's open 10 am to 6 pm. They will help you make same-day hotel reservations. Phone: +49(0)221-30400. Cologne Airport:  Called the "Köln Bonn Airport" both Cologne and Bonn are served from the airport that sits between the two cities. A taxi ride at the time of writing (see the airport site for current rates) to Central Cologne costs around 25 Euros. The distance is 17 kms and it should take around 15 minutes. There is bus service to the main train station in Cologne every 15 minutes. Cologne Central Station - Köln Hbf:  The huge central train station is one of the key rail hubs in Europe. It is centrally located near pedestrian shopping streets and the Cathedral. For travellers using Germany's excelent rail system, Germany Rail Passes (buy direct) offer discounted travel around Germany and to neighboring countries. Cologne Map:  The Cologne Tourist Office offers a fine, full color tourist map you can download and print on a legal size page. See the box in the upper right for the link. (1.6 mb download) Cologne - When to Go:  Cologne has moderate, mild winters. It seldom snows. Summers can be humid (but seldom blazingly hot). Fall is considered idea; hotels lower prices in September-October and raise them when the carnival season starts on November 11. Cologne - Library and Internet Access:  Free internet access is available at the Cologne Public Library (StadtBibliothek Köln), one of the biggest in Germany. There is a wireless LAN there, as well as international newspapers. Cologne Carnival:  Although carnival season in Cologne starts on November 11, the main event called the "three mad days" is held around easter time (opens the Thursday before the beginning of Lent) and attracts over a million revelers. See our links on the upper right for more. Cologne Attractions:   The Cologne Cathederal - Cologne's Gothic Cathederal is one of its top attractions. It took over 600 years to build and is a UNESCO world heritage site. Conveniently located right next to the train station. In 2000, the Cathederal treasures were placed in a historic vaulted chamber so folks could view them easier. If you can climb 509 steps you'll get a good view of Cologne on the observation platform. Open 6am to 7:30 pm for viewing, except during mass. Bring a wide-angle lens if you want to get it all in the picture, or you'll end up with an impressionistic shot like this picture of the Cologne Cathederal and its soaring spires. Rhine Boat Trips - lots of day trips and longer excursions are available. Ask at the tourist office. Visit the house of 4711, the Original Eau-de-Cologne - Wilhelm Mulhens marketed a concoction called Aqua Mirabilis on the basis of its stimulating and refreshing effect (splash it on or drink it, it didn't matter). It later got to be know as the first Eau de Cologne when French Revolutionary troops sent it home for gifts to the family. Glockengasse, in the city centre between the cathedral and Neumarkt, opposite the opera house. Have a brew and a bite to eat in the Altstadt (old town) - Cologne is definately a beer city with their own beer styly called Kölcsh, a pale top fermented beer that must be brewed in the Cologne metoopolitan area. While most of the breweries in the city center are gone, you can still enjoy a beer with other tourists at a pub in the Altstadt. Visit the Roman-German Museum (Romisch-Germanisches Museum) - See Roman antiquities from the first through fourth centuries--and the 230 foot long mosaic showing Dionysus, the Roman god of wine. Japan (Nippon or Nihon) The four major islands of Japan are Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, covering a total area of 377,829 square kilometers (or 145,880 square miles). According to the National Census of 2000, the total population of Japan was 126.92 million, and there were ten prefectures with more than 3 million residents. The average size for households is approximately 2.7 persons, with the average life expectancy for males being 77.64 years, and 84.62 years for females. http://www.mhlw.go.jp/english/index.html As of 2000, Japan's highly skilled workforce consisted of 64.46 million workers. The number of unemployed individuals, however, had exceeded 3 million per year for two consecutive years, and stood at 3.2 million. http://www.stat.go.jp/english/1.htm NATURAL FEATURES OF JAPAN The chief feature of the Japanese archipelago is its geological instability, resulting in frequent volcanic activity and earthquakes. Another distinctive characteristic of the topography is the fact that the Japanese archipelago is made up almost entirely of steep mountain districts with very few plains. MAJOR LAKES A small number of large rivers, such as the Ishikarigawa, Shinanogawa, Tonegawa, Kisogawa, Yodogawa, and Chikugogawa, have large deltas at their mouths. A lake is defined as having an area of 10 kms2 or more and according to a 1999 survey, the lakes listed below are three of Japan's largest: lakes m Prefecture 1. Biwa-ko 670.3 Shiga 2. Saroma-ko 151.9 Hokkaido FACTS IN BRIEF National Symbols Although Japan does not have an official national anthem, "Kimigayo" (His Majesty's Reign) is considered to be the 'de facto' anthem. Similarly, the "Hinomaru" ("the sun disk") has gained worldwide recognition as the 'national flag' of Japan, although it has never been officially designated as such. There is also no national flower of Japan, although many people believe it to be the cherry blossom for its overwhelming popularity or the chrysanthemum for its association with the Imperial Household. Japan has, however, officially recognized national entities such as the national butterfly (oomurasaki), national bird (pheasant), and the national sport (sumo). The national currency of Japan is yen (¥). Japanese language The Japanese language (known as nihongo in Japanese) has a complex writing system, comprised of Kanji and Kana. Kanji is derived from Chinese characters, with each character holding specific meaning, while Kana is a phonetic syllabry of characters, each character containing no inherent meaning in abstract. Hiragana and Katakana, two types of Kana, are used for locally derived Japanese words, and words initially 'imported' from other languages, respectively. It is not uncommon for students of the language to reach a level of fluency in spoken and written Japanese only after several years of dedicated study. World Heritage Sites in Japan In addition to Yakushima and Shirakami-Sanchi, which were both awarded World Natural Heritage status in December 1992, Japan also boasts nine World Cultural Heritage landmarks, including several well-known temples and shrines (see below).
