TRAVEL TIPS About The Maldives The Maldives is situated in the heart of the Indian Ocean. There are 1,190 islands within the archipelago-consisting of 26 atolls and spread around a 90,000 m 2 area. The islands are a few metres above sea level and only about 199 islands are inhabited. Marco Polo has called the islands "the flower of the Indies..." There is an abundance of marine flora and fauna, with over 200 species of coral. The ocean-has a great variety of fish, grey reef sharks, dolphins, butterflyfish, parrotfish, surgeonfish, Vermillion rock cod, giant leatherback turtles, moray eels, lionfish, scorpionfish... and the list goes on. There are historical and archaeological records which indicate the Maldives have been inhabited for well over 5,000 years. The Maldives is a free independent country. Getting There Many major airlines fly to the Maldives. It is 11 hours flying time from London, one hour from Colombo and around four hours from Dubai, Karach'i, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Entry All visitors must have a valid passport. For visitors from yellow fever infected areas, an international certificate of inoculation is required. No visa is required in advance. A tourist visa of 30 days will be issued to all visitors with valid travel documents. All Visitors who enter the Maldives should be in possession of a return air ticket and at least US$30 ,per intended day of stay. It is advisable that all visitors have confirmed hotel reservations before arrival. Language Divehi is the official language of the Maldives, and English is the working language used-by the government offices and within the tourism industry. Climate The Maldives enjoys a warm tropical climate all year round with temperatures varying from 33 .3°C to 26.3°C. The annual rainfall is around 29 cm. This is a destination that is always in season. Time The Maldives is five hours ahead, of Greenwich Mean Time, and half an hour behind India and Sri Lanka. Currency The Maldivian currency is Rufiyaa (RF) which is divided into 100 Laari (L). Coins in use are 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50 Laari and one Rufiyaa. Tim Leffel's Cheapest Destinations Tim Leffel's Cheapest Destinations Places where a fistful of dollars will pay for weeks of hotels, train rides, and meals. December 12, 2005 Student Travel (Usually Cheap Travel) Thanks to Kathleen Crislip who runs the student travel section of About.com. She mentioned The World's Cheapest Destinations in her holiday gift feature: Top 10 Best Student Travel Books 2005. I feel kind of guilty being on this esteemed list since my book came out a few years ago. But I am hard at work on the home stretch of an updated version, due out sometime around the end of February next year. No earth-shattering changes, but much of Eastern Europe has gotten more expensive, especially for Americans, and a few up and comers have gotten more attractive. New additions will be Argentina, Nicaragua, and Romania. I want to keep the number at 21 though, which means a few will drop out and become "honorable mentions." I'm also adding a short bit on East Africa, since more than a few backpackers make that trek down the coast. Having just gotten back from Botswana and South Africa, however (more on that in the next blog), I stand by my assertion that just because a region has a lower per-capita GDP than where you come from, it doesn't mean it's a bargain. If you are a student traveling on a budget, as opposed to a trustafarian who just wears the uniform of the rebellious disenchanted, you need to go where your limited funds will go a long way. This means avoiding the places 90% of college kids on summer vacation set off for: Western Europe, Australia, the U.S., Canada, and New Zealand. Yes, it sounds cool to say you spent your summer bopping around London, Paris, Amsterdam, New York, and Sydney, but you'll come back with a debt load rivaling next semester's tuition. Look beyond the obvious--it'll be much more of an adventure, and you can live it up on the cheap. Their friends and relatives might tell them it's risky, but is it really more risky than buying something in our current overheated home markets? After all, with housing prices through the roof in most developed countries now, buying land or a house overseas is looking like a safer bet. I won't say more since I wrote a long article on the subject for the current issue of Offshore Real Estate and Investment Quarterly , put out by the publishers of EscapeArtist.com. But I will add that when you start reading EscapeArtist and International Living on a regular basis, you realize that some people don't just daydream about buying a little place of their own overseas someday--they really do it. Lots of them. Every month. Then after they get there, they often find they're spending a small fraction of what they did at home. A safer investment and cheaper living--a nice combination. I think the authors' perspectives on life in Mexico seemed to be very honest and accurate since they revealed both the good and bad aspects about living south of the border. Because of our interest in visiting and living in Mexico, I own three editions (including the 1988 and the 1999 copies). I've found each edition extremely comprehensive and appreciate the updated material provided in each. Like any guidebook, Choose Mexico provides comprehensive information about living, retiring, and doing business in Mexico. We have used it extensively during our yearly semi-retirement visits to the country. The basic facts in any guidebook do not change from year to year while new regulations and changing economic are dutifully reported. I certainly don't expect the authors of a guidebook to present the same facts in a different form for each new edition. It's a guidebook, not a novel! I would rate Choose Mexico as five stars for their complete and entertaining guidebook on living in Mexico. Was this review helpful to you? Poor information for the most part. Some incorrect information I found, which I emailed to the author about.
