Then why not try them all! Written for backpackers by backpackers, this guide lets you go further, stay longer and pay less for a trip of a lifetime. FIND YOUR WAY - inspiring itineraries and hundreds of maps help you plan your modern-day Grand Tour EAT, DRINK & BE MERRY - extended listings for cheap and chic sleeps, tasty budget eats, uber-cool bars and world-famous clubs, with hand-picked splurge suggestions BE IN THE KNOW - our culture coverage puts everything from ancient Greece to flamenco dancing in context SEE ANOTHER SIDE - discover wife carrying in Finland, cheese rolling in Britain and tomato fights in Spain with our lowdown on the strange world of Europe's festivals From the Publisher Europe is a chameleon; its colours change rapidly. One day you can be on the cobbled streets of a medieval city, the next atop a snowcapped peak. Nowhere else greets you with such a swift succession of different languages and menu changes. With more than 30 national cultures on a modest landmass, Europe frequently dazzles even Europeans. Dubbed a living museum for the way its past and present coexist, this wealthy continent offers the charms of quaint Amsterdam and Prague alongside the buzz of modern metropolises such as Berlin and London. Postmodern buildings such as the Guggenheim in Bilbao have quickly taken a place beside Barcelona's still unfinished Sagrada Familia and older architectural icons like the ancient Parthenon. Europe's appeal lies not just in an influential, often bloody past and a largely peaceful present, but also in its mix of culture and nature. Botticelli and Picasso masterpieces aren't far from the countryside or popular beaches. You can follow the footsteps of characters you read about in textbooks or blaze your own trail in the Alps. Whether you dream of experiencing the romance of Paris, absorbing the chaos of Istanbul or downing a few beers in Belgium, this multifaceted continent can satisfy your tastes. Just as the EU has expanded east, so too has the traveller's itinerary and many formerly communist countries - even those outside of the EU - have been more open to tourism. The new colours that these destinations reveal, show how diverse the European cultural palette is, but for budget travellers there's a bonus. While Europe usually requires a longer, thicker shoestring than elsewhere, many of these recent hot locations are among the continent's cheapest. No guidebook is perfect... , December 19, 2005 Reviewer: Julia Webber "nerd" (South Bohemia, Czech Republic) - See all my reviews ... but I find the Lonely Planet guides to be better than most. Obviously this book covers a very large area, so it goes for breadth rather than depth. If you want to explore a country outside the major cities, get a local guide. This book contains a good amount of details about major Western countries- specifically Britain, Germany, France, Spain and Italy. If you are planning on travelling through the Balkans, Eastern Central Europe, the Baltics or Scandinavia, you should know that this guide only provides information about the major cities and tourist centers, and will not guide you away from the beaten path. Also, be aware that the book does not include Belarus or the Ukraine. Lonely Planet provides excellent maps, directions to attractions, and instructions for using the local transport (very useful), along with a language guide. Their advice regarding where to go and what to see, along with what to stay away from, is usually quite good. The main problem with this book is price inaccuracies. Naturally, prices change, so it is to be expected that the restaraunt, hotel and attraction prices cited in the guide may not be entirely accurate, but a person should be able to take it as truth when a guide says that ________ is the cheapest place to get food/accomodation/internet access... Lonely Planet misses a lot of budget traveler's gems and focuses mainly on expensive things in city centers. If you take the metro/bus/whatever a few stops away from the center in most of these towns, you can find hostels/restaraunts/internet cafes which are much cheaper than those listed in the book. It's worth the 10 extra minutes of travel time if you truly need to travel "on a shoestring." Was this review helpful to you? However, the problem wih Lonely Planet in general is that you need to buy he most updated version everytime because things change and the lonely planet people know this. And they keep updating it. Luckyly this edition is the newest one because it has the wedding of prince of denmark in it which is pretty recent. All in all this is an excellent bok! Was this review helpful to you? It is also suitable for families as it gives hotel and camping options in addition to hostels. One of my favorite aspects of it are the quick tips, which are very useful, and the mini history lessons for each country. The book also includes how to say basic words (hello, goodbye, please, thank you) in each language as well as a little phrase book in the back. The book is incredibly helpful in planning trips because it also gives a suggested daily budget and whether or not a visa is needed to enter a country. However, since it highlights so many countries, it is not ideal if you are staying mostly in one country. None of the sections go very in depth on the small towns in each country. For most travellers, that is not a problem. If you are staying in a country for a semester or a year though, you might want to also buy a book specific to where you are. Because it covers so many countries/cities, it missed a few details that I thought should be included. But overall, I'd say this is more than enough as a survival guide in Europe! One of the best-preserved examples of Carolingian ... more Germany wears its riches well: elegant big-city charm, small picture-postcard towns, pagan-inspired harvest festivals, a wealth of art and culture and the perennial pleasures of huge tracts of forest, delightful castles and fine wine and beer are all there for the savouring. Deep in the heart of Europe, Germany has had a seminal impact on Continental history. From Charlemagne and the Holy Roman Empire to Otto von Bismarck's German Reich, Nazism and the rise and fall of the Berlin Wall, no other nation has moulded Europe the way Germany has - for better or worse. When To Go Germany is a fine destination year-round, but most people visit between May and September when sunny skies are most likely and much of life moves outdoors. Beer gardens and cafes bustle at all hours; outdoor events and festivals enliven cities and villages; and hiking, cycling and swimming are popular pursuits - at least as long as the weather plays along. Remember that rain is a possibility in any month. The flipside of summer travel is, of course, larger crowds at museums and other attractions. Accommodation needn't be hard to come by unless you're drawn to beach and mountain resorts popular with German holiday-makers. The shoulder seasons (from March to May and from October to early November) bring fewer tourists and often surprisingly pleasant weather. In April and May, when flowers and fruit trees are in bloom, it can be mild and sunny. Indian summers that stretch well into autumn are not uncommon. With the exception of winter sports, activities between November and early March are likely to focus more on culture and city life. In these months, skies tend to be gloomy and the mercury often drops below freezing. On the plus side, there are fewer visitors and shorter queues (except in the winter resorts). Just pack the right clothes and keep in mind that there are only six to eight hours of daylight. In December the sun (if there is any) sets around 15:30 . Factoid Smellpol When the files of the former East German secret service, the Stasi, were opened up, they were found to contain, among other things, cotton wool swabs of dissidents' body odour, kept in bottles for use by sniffer dogs. Y Viva Espaa Spain has been a favourite playground of British, Dutch, and German tourists who escape the dreary climates of their own countries for some summer sun by the sea, with copious quantities of sex, and sangria stirred in for good measure. Quite a cocktail for the 18-30 crowd. For the culturally inclined there is plenty of that too. Hemingway made bullfighting popular in America literature, but these are all clichs. Of course you'll want to have paella on the coast, and Spain wouldn't be the same without a little flamenco dancing and intricate guitar. After a few days, you'll even be an expert on the castanets yourself. Several regions in Spain have kept a separate identity, culturally and linguistically. These include the Basques around the Bay of Biscay; the Galicians in north-western Spain; and the Catalans of north-eastern Spain. The nomadic Spanish Gypsies, Gitanos, are a separate ethnic group. Spanish Culture The Roman Catholic religion has played an important part in Spanish life and culture. Spanish painters have contributed greatly to the global work on display in museums around the world. Among the most famous are El Greco, Diego Velzquez, Francisco Goya, Salvador Dal, and the prolific Pablo Picasso. Visit the Prado, in Madrid, for works by El Greco, Velzquez, Bartolom Estban Murillo, Goya, Botticelli, Titian, and Rembrandt. The National Museum of Modern Art, also in Madrid, concentrates on Spanish painting after 1800. And of course the new Guggenheim Museum opened in Bilbao on October 18th, 1997. There are 19 galleries in the building; considered something of a work of art in itself. Madrid Madrid : The capital of Spain lies in the middle of the Castillian plain, 646 metres above sea level. Valencia Valencia is Spain's third largest city; a city of some three hundred bell towers, medieval cathedral and former palaces. According to legend, the Holy Grail is the chalice from which Jesus drank during the Last Supper and is presently kept in Valencia's Cathedral. Valencia's Holy Grail, one of a dozen claimed to be the original, was used by Pope John Paul II during the 1992 Papal visit to Valencia. Just 350km from the two most important Spanish cities, Madrid and Barcelona, Valencia is easily accessible from either of them... or you could base yourself at the centre of the Spanish Mediterranean coast, opposite the Balearic Islands, and easily travel to both of them. Galicia : The tourist guide of Galicia is mainly in Spanish, though it does have some English sections. Malaga Web : Between the sea and the sierra, this part of Eastern Andalucia is well visited by tourists to the beaches of the Costa del Sol.
