FREE Newsletter. Sign Up Now! Russia Travel Guide Driving in Russia can be a challenge, given poorly maintained roads, road hazards, corrupt traffic police, and the frequent accidents. Also, with trains and public transportation systems, there's not much reason to drive. Furthermore, according to Russia's Ministry of Transportation, only about 40 percent of Russia's 135,000 towns are connected by roads, and of those, about 40 percent are substandard. The other roads aren't much better.
However, Russia's eastern part is now connected to its western part, thanks to a newly opened section of highway linking Chita to Khabarovsk in Russia's Far East. With this highway section, is now possible to drive the 6,214 miles (10,000 km) from Moscow to Vladivostok. Of course, eager drivers should be aware that only about one-quarter of the eastern section of the highway is paved. The rest is gravel-topped, with plans to have the entire highway paved by 2080.
Russian officials expect that the transcontinental highway will help move goods as well as people, lowering costs of items intended for the burgeoning Chinese market. Prior to the highway, air travel or the famous Trans-Siberian rail routes were the only other feasible ways to cross Russia's vast geography.
Like elsewhere in Eastern Europe, car theft is common. Park in secured lots or well-lit areas.
You will not find many car rental agencies, and those that exist will usually want to give you a driver as well as the car.
Rules of the Road
So, you still want to drive? Then here are some rules of the road.
When you are stopped by the traffic police, you will be informed of the violation. Theoretically, you will issued a ticket and the officer can take your fine on the spot and give you a receipt for it. They are also known to take "payments" without receipts. Larger fines need to be paid at a Sherbank office.
You need a valid drivers license from your home country, and a certified translation of it. If you are planning to drive in Russia for more than six months, you will need to get a Russian drivers license.
Do not drink and drive.
Speeds are 60 km per hour (37 mph) in urban areas and 90 km per hour (55 mph) outside of these areas. Speeding can get you fined. Russia Travel Guide Index

Amazon.com Sales Rank: Today: #21,185 in Video Yesterday: #19,563 in Video Editorial Reviews Amazon.com After winning a tour package in a game show, the bickering Griswald family carve a trail of destruction through England (where they knock over Stonehenge), France, Germany, and Italy. Somehow Ellen (Bevery D'Angelo), the mom, gets kidnapped by gangsters, leading to a car chase that reunites the family, despite their differences. It's hard to believe that National Lampoon's European Vacation is only the second of the Vacation movies; it has the exhausted pallor of the last of a long series of sequels, drained of all zest or original ideas. The charmless smirk of Chevy Chase, mechanical in its idiocy, hangs over European Vacation like a death mask. It's hard to believe that this hack was once the funny and sexy hero of Foul Play . D'Angelo keeps her chin up and gives the movie whatever class it may have; she deserves better. --Bret Fetzer --This text refers to the DVD edition. Spotlight Reviews (What's this?) ( Report this ) 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful: Not on par with the original, but pretty close! , April 19, 2005 Reviewer: Britt Gillette "www.thedvdreport.com" (Chesapeake, VA USA)- See all my reviews Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo return as Clark and Ellen Griswold in National Lampoon's European Vacation, sequel to the original Vacation movie and precursor to the holiday classic Christmas Vacation. Like the other films, this edition contains different cast members to play the roles of Griswold children Audrey (Dana Hill) and Rusty (Jason Lively). The only Vacation movie that doesn't feature Cousin Eddie (Randy Quaid), European Vacation is nevertheless one hilarious movie. It's an old school comedy like they just don't make anymore... When the Griswold family appears on the hit TV game show, Pig In A Poke, they inadvertently beat a superior family and win an all-expenses paid trip to Europe. As usual, Clark is giddy about the wonderful trip of family bonding which he dreams his family will enjoy. But Audrey is mortified at the prospect of leaving her boyfriend behind. Nevertheless, the Griswolds hop on a plane bound for Europe. Right off the bat, Clark's dream vacation begins to experience shortcomings. The first hotel the family stays in is a half-star dump with a community bathroom, and Clark gets stuck on a circular roadway where he endlessly passes by Big Ben and Parliament. A couple of brilliant guest appearances are turned in by Eric Idle (of Monty Python fame) who plays the role of a zealously friendly biker. In one of the funniest scenes in the film, Clark smashes into the biker, who apologizes to Clark while hobbling away from the wreck and who springs a bloody leak from his wrist that he passes off as a mere "flesh wound". When Clark hits another motorist, he and the family are given the man's bumper as a souvenir to take home to America. As the Griswold clan makes their way across mainland Europe, especially in France and Germany, they encounter various pitfalls and cultural misunderstandings. Rusty causes a dog to jump to its death from the heights of the Eiffel Tower, and Clark instigates a riot in a small Bavarian township. One of the more memorable one-liners from the film is when Audrey tells Clark that in Germany "sex" means "six," so while searching for his relatives who live in apartment six, he greets some surprised residents with the tagline, "Hello, my family and I are looking for sex!" When the stress becomes unbearable, the vacation inevitably drives each of the family members in a different direction, but everyone is quickly brought back together when Ellen is kidnapped by a pair of petty criminals who want to get their hands on the family vacation fund. Clark must come to the rescue and save, not only his wife, but the family's entire vacation experience as well... A great comedy that contributes to the overall quality of the National Lampoon's Vacation films, European Vacation is a fun, family-oriented film. Those who enjoyed the exploits of Clark Griswold in the more recent Christmas Vacation or Vegas Vacation films will find it well worth their while to go back see this movie which many people have forgotten about. This is an utterly hilarious film in its own right, and clearly earns its designation as a must-see film... The DVD Report --This text refers to the DVD edition Was this review helpful to you? Orlando Vacation first week
Kevin's Orlando Vacation Kevin Lowey >Orlando Vacation Kevin's Orlando Vacation Here's a few pictures from my Orlando Vacation first week of March 2003. Select the location below. You will be shown some pictures, with descriptions of what you are seeing. If you select the picture, you'll get the full-sized image. Or, if you prefer, you can see just the pictures . Enjoy! Astronaut Hall of Fame Kennedy Space Center Seaworld Universal Studios Islands of Adventure Disney's Animal Kingdom The theme parks had several kinds of shows. Most of them about 20 minutes long: 4D Movies These are similar to ordinary movies, but often in 3D. They may include some anamatronic figures around the movie theatre, perhaps a few live performers, smoke, light, flame, water spray, and smell effects, trick seats that prod you in the back or bounce around, etc. Examples include "Terminator 2-3D" at Universal Studios, or "Its Tough to Be a Bug" at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Highly recommended. Simulator Rides These are again mostly film, but you aren't sitting in a regular movie theatre seat. Instead, you sit in a simulator that can tilt up, down, left, and right. When combined with the movies, you think you're really moving. Some examples of simulator rides are the "Back to the Future" ride at Universal, and the "Polar Exploration" ride at Seaworld. Tracked rides In these rides, you are strapped into a car that rides around the show on a track. Things jump out at you, the car spins around, etc. Some also include 3D (like Spider Man), or the ability to shoot back at bad guys (like Men in Black). Others are in water instead of land (like the Jaws tour boat). Another example is the ET the Extraterrestrial ride. The "earthquake" ride at Universal is a cross between this and a simulator. They put you in a subway car, which is really a simulator mounted on tracks. It takes you a short distance down the track to a different stage (although with lighting, sound, and wind effects if feels like you went a lot farther). There the simulator rocks and rolls while the subway suffers an 8.0 earthquake. Real Rides These are the various roller coasters, and other similar rides. Cool coasters are the Twin Dragons and the Hulk at Islands of Adventure, and "kraken" at Seaworld. A variant of these is the "water coasters" where you sit in a boat that goes through artificial river rapids, falls, etc. On these you'll always get soaked (so I didn't try them out). Examples are the Jurassic Park ride and the Popeye ride at Islands of Adventure. Another variant is the "jungle safari" ride at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Here they put you on real 4 wheel drive vehicles, and take you through the Africa part of the zoo, lions, elephants, giraffes, etc. Walkthroughs These are shows where you walk through the stages. Normally there's several separate rooms. You walk into one, get a bit of the show there, then go to the next room, get some more show, etc. Examples of this are the "Twister" show at Universal Studios (where you walk through a town that is experiencing a "twister"), the "Poseiden" show at Islands of Adventure, and the simulated Saturn V launch at the Kennedy Space Centre Apollo exhibit. All of these were great. Live Stage Shows These are typical live shows, sometimes including animals. Some of thecool ones were the "Animal Planet Live" and "Wild Wild Wild Wild West" shows at Universal Studios, the "Pirate Adventure" and "Shamu" shows at Seaworld, and "The Lion King" at Disney's Animal Kingdom.
