Visits to the sites connected with the Shoah (Auschwitz, Majdanek) are covered too, but they are kept as an optional program. Huge, lazy rivers flow into secret lakes, untouched over thousands of years and surrounded by the dense green vegetation of the jungle. It is the most breathtaking natural wilderness on the planet. Titicaca Lake Titicaca, at 3800 metres, is the world's highest lake and is shared between Peru and Bolivia, with its western side located in Peru. The beautiful landscape and the dramatic light here, as well as the altitude, will take your breath away. Cuzco Cuzco, in the Peruvian Andes, was the ancient capital city of the Inca empire. Inca Trail The Inca Trail is an ancient roadway that winds through the Peruvian mountains high above the Urubamba River, following a route leading to the "lost" city of Machu Picchu. Sacsayhuamn Almost five centuries after the fall of the Inca empire, the titanic fortress of Sacsayhuamán still stands above Cuzco, impervious to invading armies, earthquakes and the elements. Nazca Lines The Nazca Lines are the extraordinary, mysterious legacy left by a culture that flourished in 300 BC, vast drawings of animals and deities that cover 50 square kilometres of the Nazca Desert. Machu Picchu The ancient ruins of enigmatic Machu Picchu still stand, a silent legacy of the glorious past of the Inca Empire. Torres del Paine National Park Spanning both Chile and Argentina, Patagonia has always had a romantic, slightly unreal image, perpetuated by writers such as Bruce Chatwin (who came here in search of mythical monsters). This stunningly beautiful, wild and sparsely-populated land has an almost inexhaustible wealth of incredible natural phenomena, but the jewel in the Chilean crown is the Torres del Paine National Park, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. Easter Island Easter Island is one of the world's most famous, but least visited, archaeological sites - a small, hilly, now treeless island of volcanic origin, adorned with scores of strange statues. Lauca National Park The Lauca National Park is northern Chile's natural treasure, a Global Biosphere Reserve that covers 137,883 hectares of the high plateau of the Tarapaca region.
