Cancun Mexico : TravelYucatan.com Cancun Mexico Info Including Beaches, Mayan Ruins, Tours Cancun Mexico CANCUN MEXICO Cancun is Mexico's most visited tourist destination and boasts over twenty-five thousand hotel rooms. There's golf, tennis lots of shopping facilities and a remarkable biodiversity. There are four hundred seventy-five bird species, over a hundred different mammals and twelve hundred plant species. Cancun has lots of beach and the hotels are magnificent. Some people actually never even leave the hotel grounds their entire vacation. This speaks volumes for some of these resorts situated on the edge of ocean beaches. The beautiful ocean are home to over two thousand five hundred marine species with five hundred different tropical fish. Cancun is located in the State of Quintana Roo at the most southern tip of the peninsula. It is divided into two sections: the Hotel Zone [Zona Hotelera] which is a 22 km sandy strip of land between a lagoon and seaside hotels located on Cancun Island and Cancun City/Downtown [El Centro] which is home to the many Mexicans who live in the district. Downtown is located on the mainland. Hurricane Wilma Distaster Information THE CANCUN HOTEL ZONE The hotel zone is an island shaped like a 7. It is joined to the mainland on the southern tip by the Punta Nizuc Bridge and the Playa Linda Bridge at the northern end. This 22 km strip of sandy beach is bisected by a long main street named Kukulcan Boulevard. On the north and south side of the island is the Caribbean Sea while an enormous lagoon named Laguna Nichupte is formed by the inside of the "7" on the islands southwest side. Cancun is similar to Miami or Myrtle Beach but with a more international flare . In some places you would be hard-pressed to notice the difference. You can however go on guided excursions from Cancun to almost anywhere in the Yucatan. CANCUN CITY/DOWNTOWN The city begins where Kukulcan Boulevard meets Bonampak Avenue at the most northern tip. In Cancun streets are named after Mayan cities. Today over 450,000 people live in this growing community. The heart of the city is known as "Downtown" [El Centro] which is where the main vendor markets are located on Tulum Avenue. There are also numerous restaurants and boutiques offering everything from cigars to exotic perfumes. NOTE: We have purchased expensive perfumes in Cancun at 1/3 the cost of the perfume in the US and Canada. HOTELS OFF THE BEACH STRIP There are many hotels off the beach strip and these hotels drop in price dramatically. Many are within a short drive or bus ride to the beach. The rule is that the closer to the beach you are the more expensive. You can also find some pretty expensive 5 Star resorts way off the beach that cater to people who don't necessarily feel the need to be near the sea. If you are backpacking and traveling by bus there are a number of cheap accommodations near the bus station. If you just stand there with your backpack/luggage somebody will approach you and suggest a hotel. These guys are the hotel reps and get a commission for bringing in customers. HOTELS ON THE BEACH STRIP Every time you blink it seems there is a new hotel. We have spoken to many people who have had marvelous stays in more than one hotel in the beach zone. Quite often we talk to people who have been going here for over a dozen years and have never had a negative experience with any of the hotels. If you are planning on going there, the following articles written by Jules Seigel are recommended reading. Jules has lived in the area for over 20 years. See "Recommended Readings" located at the bottom of this page. GETTING AROUND CANCUN Public Bus The cheapest way to get around is by public bus. The public bus system operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week everyday of the year. For more information see: Bus System For bus travel outside the hotel and city zones see: Mexican Bus Taxi You can get a taxi cab anywhere in Cancun [except the airport]. You can take a taxi to the airport, but taxis are not allowed to pick up passengers there [although they try]. Taxi rates are set by how many "zones" you travel through to get to your destination. There are no meters in the cabs. This way you can get a price up-front from the driver as to how much the fare will be. Rates are posted in most hotels near the front desk. NOTE: Taxi rates are more expensive from the front door of your hotel than if you walk to the street and flag down a taxi [hotels get a kick-back]. Car Rental There are numerous car rental agencies for you to choose from. For more information including links to car rental agency web sites see: Renting A Vehicle Walking The hotel zone is 22 kilometers long and the hotels and malls are spread out along the coast. Depending on where your hotel is you may be within walking distance of any of the "big malls". If you go to the tourist zone of the city, everything there is within walking distance [bus station, banks, restaurants, hotels etc.]. Bicycle Some hotels rent bikes. You can ride on the sidewalks on Kukulcan Blvd. but we don't recommend riding on the street. We have also never seen "locks" supplied with bike rentals so it is hard to visit a mall without leaving your bike unlocked. Mopeds All we can say about renting a moped is that if you do you are risking your life. Those things are death-traps. We have seen the damage done. THINGS TO KNOW Cancun is an international tourist destination and thus there is foreign money and experience here. Many of the hotels are co-owned by foreign investers who also supply experienced management. There are countless Americans, Germans, Italians, Swiss, and Canadians working here. This is the tourist Mecca of Mexico and the Mexican government provides a safe environment for this to flourish. Crime is taken very seriously here. You are indeed safe. When you go down - be sure to check out Sky City and the Jemez Trail - you'll also love Santa Fe. The hotel was five start in every way and I can't say enough about the activities coordinators, front desk staff, room service staff or concierge. It is by far the most beautiful place my Partner and I have stayed. The service was excellent and the staff was very attentive. We are planning another trip to the Hyatt very soon. If you want a classy and relaxing time, this is the place to go! The the rooms are very beautiful and I loved everything about the Hotel. You just don't want to leave and room service is so good. Everyone from the bell boys to the desk clerks treat you like royalty everytime they see you. The room was spacious and cozy. The views are gorgeous no matter where your room is. They offer a variety of things to keep you busy from golfing to horseback riding. We didnt get a chance to take advantage of this as it was very cold, however, we will be going back this summer to enjoy all that we missed. This resort is worth every penny!!! One night was booked through the hotel in conjunction with a New Years Eve Package, one night through Priceline, one night through Hotwire. I called in advance to request a "room type" and was happily accomodated. When we arrived we were very pleased overall with the property, the location, amenities and certainly our room. We had a beautiful view of the mountains from the East side of the property. There was a card and a box of chocolates from a local chocolatier expressing their wishes for a "Happy Anniversary." The staff bent over backwards in every way to greet us, accomodate us, ask if everything was ok, compliment us...not in an over the top way either...I wasn't ducking for cover everytime I saw one of them. In referrence to some of the other reviews here I would like to say...I am a local and thought there was a nice balance of culture without having it shoved down my throat. I have reactive airway disease and asthma and while there was indeed potpourri and candles everywhere I had absolutely no problem. Probably due to the fact that smoking is NOT allowed in any areas of the hotel or restaurants. I'll take potpourri and candles any day over cigarette smoke. The workout facilities were very nice as was the spa facility. It was obviously winter but I would tout it as a winter getaway, temps were in the 50's during the day and the one day it rained we stayed in the spa and took a nap in the afternoon. What's not a getaway about that? You can't control the weather so make the most of it anyway. I did suggest a few minor changes in the spa that could have made my stay better but they were more conveniences than anything. I dind't eat in any of the restaurants on the property but the Ballroom was absolutely beautiful for the NYE party. Way above and beyond anything else I have ever encountered. I will indeed return and would prefer this spa getaway to any that I have had in Vegas, the food though pricey was much cheaper, more in room amenities ...and NO Smoke. Traveler rating: Bernalillo: Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort & Spa : "Great perks, but spotty on service & cultural issues" Dec 26, 2004 : Compare prices with: My partner and I stayed here two nights, including Thanksgiving. For such a place, with so many amenities, how can one complain? Well, I can. That said, I'd still go back--for a low price. But first, some of the qualities that are worthy of a resort *. The wonderful amenities that folks have already pointed out (though we found them uniquely special for us) included the giant outdoor rock/waterfall hot tub, the extensive fitness room (with headphones hooked up to the machines to listen to multiple TVs and radio), the spa steam/sauna/hot tub and exquisite locker rooms, and the outdoor grounds along the Rio Grande and the Sandia mountains in the near distance. As many people prior have pointed out, the staff will go the extra mile to help you (though they may need some prodding -- see below), as the concierge did in helping us find a vegetarian-friendly restaurant on Thanksgiving. My complaints: I called up nearly a week ahead of time asking for 'special' requests (like a non-smoking room and a mountain view on an upper floor). The over-the-phone staff were kind and honest and assured me my requests would be honored because it was such a relatively slow time of year. Yet, what I was not impressed with was when I checked in at the front desk, the staffer had trouble finding my reservation for both nights and then after noting and affirming my 'special' requests my partner and I were given a lower-floor room with a view of the inner courtyard main door. When I returned to the front desk to ask for another room, a different staffer (new, in training), initially had trouble honoring my request. A manager stepped in, listened to my requests and apparently over-rode the system. Thirty minutes after checking into the new room I was nicely called and asked if the room was satisfactory. Kudos. Next jeer. On the Hyatt's website, I found that the hotel usually offered several cultural activities. So, nearly a week ahead of my reservation, I called and spoke with Ben, the concierge. He was helpful in telling me that practically nothing was happening the days I was there except the guided nature hike in the bosque. Surprise, surprise! When my partner and I arrived, we found a laundry list of activities planned during our stay. I asked the front desk staff about each activity and asked about making reservations; they assured me I could show up for each without a reservation. After checking into our room, we took a stroll around the complex, ending at the in-house concierge, querying this staffer about the tennis courts and bicycles. She assured us because it was a slow time of year and getting cooler, we'd have no trouble using the courts and bicycles, practically whenever we wanted (this proved accurate). However, she carefully noted, other planned activities did require reservations, such as several of the cultural activities we had just asked the front desk about. Of course, the traditional bread-making, which we’d very much wanted to participate in, was already full with folks who had reserved in advance!! That said, she encouraged us to just 'show-up' at the different activities, such as the bread-baking the next morning, without reservations. She slyly and strongly encouraged us to always consult with her about in-house functions and to not trust what the front-desk or concierge says. She added that there was a 'communication problem' in the hotel that apparently no one had interest in addressing. (Note, the in-house concierge (called 'resort reservations') is distinct from the main concierge (which handles everything external to the hotel). We did attend the bread baking the next day and, of course, one needed reservations to participate. Standing aside listening was rude, pointless, and inappropriate (and staff rightly ignored us). Last jeer. What is most unique about this resort, and was a very attractive feature for us, is that it is located on the Santa Ana Pueblo and listed as a commercial enterprise of the tribe. As folks who do our best to support indigenous peoples’ struggles for equality, sovereignty, respect, we were very glad to have a chance to support such an endeavor. However, the actual control the Pueblo has over the resort is unclear to us. Though the fact of the resort’s location is well-milked as a commodity for guests, the relationship a guest would have with actual people from the Pueblo is muted and controlled in ways that at times are quite disconcerting. One could forget the resort is located on the Santa Ana Pueblo because most of the staff one encounters are white (especially the front desk/concierge, up-front service staff). This was jarring for us (we have nothing against white people—we’re white—but we would expect in an enterprise owned by Pueblo folk to meet Pueblo folk as something other than drivers and housekeepers). Some of the spa staff were people of color. Naturally, the dancers and drummers who graciously shared from the Pueblo’s traditional dances were from the Pueblo (though strangely they were performing inside the hotel's bar, for folks who obviously had no understanding of the significance of what they were watching). There's also a small cultural museum with very limited hours (it was never open when we were there, though apparently with a phone call tours could be arranged). If one considers the immense history of the physcial and cultural genocide of the indigenous peoples of this hemisphere, then it stands to reason that this resort might want to be a bit humble with its entertainment/commercial commodification of the tribe. Sadly, compared to many similar such places in Hawaii and elsewhere in Indian Country, the Hyatt was humble. But why not require (or strongly recommend?) guests to at least watch a 30-minute video history of the tribe and in particular its relationship to European-America (which makes up the majority of the guests)? Gosh, people who stay here (especially young folks) might think 500 years of European colonialism have been just super for this tribe. You need to be patient and persistent in getting special requests met. If you're into the commodification of the 'exotic' then this place will suit you without any responsibility on your part. If you want more of a relationship with the people, their land and their history (including your participation), then you'll need to go beyond the confines of this resort. Dec 18, 2004 : A TripAdvisor Member, Denver, CO Compare prices with: While the bed was comfy, it was difficult to sleep with the drunk people running down the hallway screaming. Room service took FOREVER (promised 30 minutes, took over an hour). Everything was incredibly expensive but was NOT worth it. We ordered room service - 3 kids meals and one adult meal was over $90. At the restaurant, I ordered crab cakes and while they were delicious, they were expensive and the size of a half-dollar at best and there were only two of them. They charged for EVERYTHING and more than the quoted price. Parking was quoted at $10 but was $15/night. We were told internet service was free, but was $12/night. When we asked the cleaning crew to come up around 11:30 am, they wrote it down and promised to come back at that time and then arrived at 2 and we had to wait out in the hallway while they finished. They did a shoddy job - leaving the trash can on top of the toilet and no new towels even though requested. There is also a smell throughout - they burn a strong insence and have potpouri everywhere so I had a migraine the entire time. The spa is fantastic, but stay elsewhere and drive in for a day at the spa. The pools are all outdoors and it's worth a trip to the hot tub even when it's nippy, but the other pools are too cold to swim in if it's cool out. If you do opt to stay at this hotel, consider stopping at the grocery on the way and stock up - they have a little fridge in the room and it's a heck of a lot cheaper (and likely tastier) than ordering from room service. Like the other films, this edition contains different cast members to play the roles of Griswold children Audrey (Dana Hill) and Rusty (Jason Lively). The only Vacation movie that doesn't feature Cousin Eddie (Randy Quaid), European Vacation is nevertheless one hilarious movie. It's an old school comedy like they just don't make anymore... When the Griswold family appears on the hit TV game show, Pig In A Poke, they inadvertently beat a superior family and win an all-expenses paid trip to Europe. As usual, Clark is giddy about the wonderful trip of family bonding which he dreams his family will enjoy. But Audrey is mortified at the prospect of leaving her boyfriend behind. Nevertheless, the Griswolds hop on a plane bound for Europe. Right off the bat, Clark's dream vacation begins to experience shortcomings. The first hotel the family stays in is a half-star dump with a community bathroom, and Clark gets stuck on a circular roadway where he endlessly passes by Big Ben and Parliament. A couple of brilliant guest appearances are turned in by Eric Idle (of Monty Python fame) who plays the role of a zealously friendly biker. In one of the funniest scenes in the film, Clark smashes into the biker, who apologizes to Clark while hobbling away from the wreck and who springs a bloody leak from his wrist that he passes off as a mere "flesh wound". When Clark hits another motorist, he and the family are given the man's bumper as a souvenir to take home to America. As the Griswold clan makes their way across mainland Europe, especially in France and Germany, they encounter various pitfalls and cultural misunderstandings. Rusty causes a dog to jump to its death from the heights of the Eiffel Tower, and Clark instigates a riot in a small Bavarian township. One of the more memorable one-liners from the film is when Audrey tells Clark that in Germany "sex" means "six," so while searching for his relatives who live in apartment six, he greets some surprised residents with the tagline, "Hello, my family and I are looking for sex!" When the stress becomes unbearable, the vacation inevitably drives each of the family members in a different direction, but everyone is quickly brought back together when Ellen is kidnapped by a pair of petty criminals who want to get their hands on the family vacation fund. Clark must come to the rescue and save, not only his wife, but the family's entire vacation experience as well... A great comedy that contributes to the overall quality of the National Lampoon's Vacation films, European Vacation is a fun, family-oriented film. Those who enjoyed the exploits of Clark Griswold in the more recent Christmas Vacation or Vegas Vacation films will find it well worth their while to go back see this movie which many people have forgotten about.
