I've put together this page in order to show you about what the two of us spent on our 2003 European Vacation, and what you might expect to pay if travel Europe during the high season. I've broken it down into statistical categories: Transportation costs, Lodging costs, and Restaurant meal expense, one per page. OurEuropean Vacation Travel Expenses--What's Typical? This year we traveled around Europe for 7 weeks. We traveled in London, Belgium, France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal, stayingmostly in hotels.Our average hotel had three stars. We leased a car, a Renault Clio 1.4, for 49 days (read about renting vs. leasing ). We are frugal but not cheap. We like to eat well, so we spent a little more than most folks on restaurant food, and most days more on food than lodging. (A detailed explanation of how I travel in Europe is available my article: How I travel in Europe ) The Statistics for our European Vacation--The Cost of Transportation. We drove a total of 8683 kilometers across Europe--that's 5393 miles, 110 miles per day. (Take into consideration that we were traveling as journalists at a breakneck speedin order to collectas much info aspossible on our "vacation." You will probably take it a bit more leisurely.) Our new Renault Clio had air conditioning and we needed it most drives. It went about 14km on a liter of fuel. (European volumes are specified in liters, 1 liter is .22 gallons, or close to a quart.) Fuel prices along our route varied between .76 and 1.15 Euros per liter. 1 US dollar let us travel about 12 km or 7.5 miles based on fuel costs alone. We spent about 600 Euros total for unleaded fuel on our trip. The 49 day lease of the car cost $1294 The total cost of driving an air conditioned car in Europe was around $2000 (converting the Euros for fuel into dollars at the time of transaction). That's about $275 per week for transportation. Thus we spent $1 for 4.34km or $1 for 2.7 miles or $0.37 per mile in total cost . (This is not far from the average ownership costs of a car in the US, which is 51.7 cents. The IRS allows a 36 cent deduction for business use of your own car.) Note: Diesel fuel is much cheaper than gasolinein Europe. Frugal travelers might want to look into renting or leasing a diesel vehicle. Transportation: Expense Comparisons with Train Tickets and Rail Passes Two Unlimited 2 month Eurail passes cost $2676, or $1338 each. A Eurail flexi pass that allows 15 days travel over two months costs $1350 or $675 each (source RailEurope) Thus, a car is quite economical compared to first class train travel with a Eurail pass, especially with two or more people. We don't have space to compare this with many point to point tickets, but you can get an idea of what rail travel might cost from my article Rail Travel in Europe - What's it Cost ? Here's a quick comparison of Italian rail travel per kilometer from 2002, when a 2nd class trip cost me 5.73 Euros for 113 kilometers, or 20 km per Euro, cheaper than our 14 km per dollar, but keep in mind that Italian train travel is about the cheapest in Europe (i.e. don't try this trick in the UK!). Remember that the expense of carrying more people multiplies the cost of a train trip, butmore riders don't increase the cost ofusing acar until you've reached your limit (for the Renault it was 4 people.) Fuel Costs in Europe - The Stats Country with Lowest Cost per Liter of Unleaded Fuel: 0.76 Euro, Spain . (Greece is also known to have cheap gas.) Italy, Belgium and France had comparable costs, which varied between 0.96 and 1.15 Euro/liter. (In France, the gasoline in those giant market malls called Hypermarkets was around 5-7 percent cheaper than most regular stations. Look for gas stations on the outskirts of town and usually inside Hypermarket parking lots.) Caorle continued its history into the Roman era as a natural port for supplying nearby Julia Concordia.The depredations of Attila the Hun in Italy dorve the peoples of Venetia and Friuli to take refuge in these lidos and the town wa probably founded in 452 AD. At Caorle, history and tradition meet and reconvene moments from the past. The locals savour their relationship with their cultural heritage because this legacy is reflected in their everyday life and has moulded their character and the way they live. The great Caorlina festival , the "bragozzi" regattas (Venetian two masted fishing boats). Caorlevivistoria (Caorle's history come alive) and the Fraima festival are events that evoke a past that its inhabitants think back on fondly and which they bring back to life with splendid historical costumes and folklore. Bibione is located in a vast pinewood and has a beach of unparalleled proportions. Bibion developed as holiday resort in the sixities, although archaeological discoveries show that there was already a settlement here in Roman times. Bibione "Tuttaspiaggia" (measureless beaches) has won a name for itself thanks to the lienght and wdth of tis dandy shores on which the sun shines from dawn the dusk. The beaches are full of orderly, colourful rows of sun shades. It offers safe cycle routes, a splendid sea front and a variety of sporting facilities that make it the ideal place for different activities. Its new and highly modern "Bibione Thermae" spa (recognized by the Italian National Health Service) exploits the alkaline bicarbonate-sodiumfluorate waters that gush out at 52 C and offers mud treatment, bathing therapy, inhalation therapy, and physiokinesis therapy; there is also a well equipped gymnasiums as well as a spa park overlooking the sea with covered thermal and open air swimming pools. The Caorle and Bibione's sorroundings offer a good number of different kind of itineraries: Historical-Artistic-Architectural itineraries which include Portogruaro, Villanova, Fratta, Teglio Veneto, Summaga, Fossalta. Portogruaro is the capital of eastern Venetia and is located halfway between Venice and Trieste. This partly Medieval and partly Renaissance town has the river Lemene running through it, which at every turn offers incredibly beautiful views. The heart of the city is Piazza della Repubblica, to which the Town Hall forms a backdrop. This is considered to be the finest Medieval building in Portogruaro, the oldest part of which dates back to the fourteenth century. Some of the building overlooking the two main streets have have porticoes and are magnificient examples of Italian and Venetian Gothic style from the 14th and 15th centuries. At Portogruaro there is the interesting Museo Nazionale Concordiense . It contains many exhibits, which come from the neighbouring Concordia Saggittaria. The Renaissance Villa Marzotto that belongs to the town council is also worth a visit: it boasts a nice park and it houses the M. Gortani Paleontological Museum. Concordia , situated about 3 km south of Portogruaro, was a Roman settlement and boasts a nice Archeological museum and a nice ancient cathedral with its Byzantine baptistery. The area around these historical towns is rich in natural itineraries that will show you the typical cultivation, parks, woods and lake and in vineyards and the D.O.C.Wine-producers (Controlled Denomination of Origin). Vicenza, Italy - Travel Photos by Galen R Frysinger,Sheboygan, Wisconsin Vicenza townsquare Vicenza (ancient Vicentia ), city in northern Italy, capital of Vicenza Province, in Veneto Region, situated at the junction of the Bacchiglione and Retrone rivers. Vicenza is a commercial and manufacturing center. Products include textiles, iron and steel, chemicals, and processed food. The town is noted for its splendid churches, palaces, and other buildings, many of which were designed by the architect Andrea Palladio. Parts of a 13th-century wall that encircled the town are still standing. so-called Basilica, or town hall, of Vicenza. (renovations started by Palladio in 1549) Vicenza was originally a Ligurian town. A free commune in the Middle Ages, it was ruled by Venice from 1404 to 1797 and by Austria from 1797 to 1866. The city was badly damaged in World War II (1939-1945). Population (1990 estimate) 109,333. Palladio, Andrea (1508-80), Italian architect, one of the most influential architects in European history. Palladio was born November 30, 1508, in Padua (Padova), and trained as a stonemason. Originally named Andrea di Pietro dalla Gondola, he received the name Palladio when he joined the academy of the Italian poet Giangiorgio Trissino, who oversaw Palladio's architectural studies. Trissino took him to Rome, where Palladio studied and measured Roman architectural ruins; he also absorbed the treatises of Vitruvius, possibly the most important of the Roman architects. One outcome of these studies was Palladio's Antiquities of Rome (1554), the principal guidebook to Roman ruins for the next two centuries. Palladio's first work of major importance was the renovation (begun 1549) of the facade and exterior supporting structure of the so-called Basilica, or town hall, of Vicenza. In and near Vicenza he designed many residences and public buildings. The best known of these are the Barbarano, Chieregati, Tiene, Porto, and Valmarana palaces and the Villa Capri, or Villa Rotonda. From about 1560 to 1580 he built several churches in Venice, notably San Francesco della Vigna, San Giorgio Maggiore, and Il Redentore. His last great work was the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, completed after his death (in Vicenza) in August 1580. Villa Rotonda Although the historical antecedents of Palladio's style are the classically Roman-influenced High Renaissance works of architects such as the Italian Donato Bramante, Palladio's own use of classical motifs came through his direct, extensive study of Roman architecture. He freely recombined elements of Roman buildings as suggested by his own building sites and by contemporary needs. At the same time he shared the Renaissance concern for harmonious proportion, and his facades have a noteworthy simplicityalmost austerityand repose. Palladio was the first architect to develop a systematic organization of the rooms in a house. He was also the first to apply to houses the pedimented porticos of Roman templesformal porches defined by a shallow triangular gable supported by a row of columns. Both these features are exemplified in the Villa Rotonda. Palladio's buildings were highly functional, often ingeniously so. In the facade of the basilica, for example, the arches are supported on slender columns; between the columns and the vertical piers that separate the arches are narrow rectangular spaces. (This pattern of an arch flanked by rectangular spaces was so widely imitated that it became known as the Palladian motif.) The arrangement allows the piers between the arches to be narrow, rather than wide and massive, and it allows more light to pass into the main building while giving the facade an open, harmonious appearance. Palladio was the author of an important scientific treatise on architecture, I Quattro Libri dell'Architettura (1570, 2nd ed. 1580; trans. The Four Books of Architecture, 1571), which was widely translated and influenced many later architects. Its precise rules and formulas were widely utilized, especially in England, and were basic to the Palladian style, adopted by Inigo Jones, Christopher Wren, and other English architects, which preceded and influenced the neoclassical architecture of the Georgian Style.
