David Tomanek's Russia Travel Page David Tomanek's Russia Travel Page This is one of the most unusual destinations I have visited so far.Below are some of the noteworthy facts you will appreciate knowing as a visitor. To a large degree unspoiled by the Communist system, Russians (and other nationals of the former Soviet Union) have kept up withtheir tradition of hospitality. While service personnel may be unfriendly, people are generally friendly, caring and helpful on a personal level. Culture in its original sense, not restricted to performingarts or architecture, and including culture of human relationships,is highly valued. It is truly a joy to get involved in a livelydiscussion with Russians about Art, Science or Politics, and feel theexcitement and deep desire to find the fundamental truth. This alonemakes an encounter with the Russian culture worth the trip. With amazing accuracy, locals spot foreigners even beforethey open their mouth. By default, foreigners are assumed to beAmericans. Ownership of a car provides drivers with a license to kill. To alesser degree, this also applies at pedestrian cross­walks,where car drivers exercise their right of way somewhat lessaggressively. The dual­pricing system, where foreigners are charged a higherrate than locals for the same service, is an outgrowth of plannedeconomy in desperate need for resources. More resources are believedto be generated using the well­established method to increase egg production by forcing chickens to lay several eggs a day, rather thanacquiring more chickens. This dual­pricing system has recently reached a new level ofabsurdity. As an example, the beautiful state Hermitage museum in St.Petersburg charges foreigners 15­20 times more than Russians. Individual tourism is efficiently suppressed by linking visarequirements to a hotel reservation. This provides hotels with aneffective monopoly on visa, and allowing for hotel rates, applied toforeigners, to be a multiple of those applied to locals. Individualtourists are often asked to pay the price of a western first­classhotel accommodation for a room without running water or toilet paper. One unusual exception from this rule is the American­founded Youth Hostel in St. Petersburg .It charges locals and visitors the same rate of US$ 19 per night perperson (as of Summer 1997) in clean rooms with few beds. Showers andtoilets are unusually clean by local hotel standards. There are noage restrictions. Most important, the hostel is run very efficientlyby an in­house travel agency that specializes in arranging visa. Thehostel/travel agency runs a server on the internet and a very useful Web site . There's ice skating in front of Paris' hotel de ville. In the Pyrenees and Alps, the ski seasons are beginning to gain steam. Yes, it's cold, but this is also a bargain time to fly to France. The month's finale is New Year's Eve, fun to be enjoyed in Paris or any of France's other lively cities. Weather The weather can range from crisp but comfortable days to downright chilly nights. There are major variations in climate depending on where you are in France, but here are weather averages for some major cities: Paris : Average high temperature is 7 degrees celsius/45 degrees farenheit, and the average low is 2 celcius, 36 farenheit. Average number of days with snow is two in the month. Nice : Average high temperature is 12 degrees celsius/53 degrees farenheit, with the average low at 9 degrees celcius/49 degrees farenheit. Average November days with snowfall is zero. Bordeaux : Average high temperature is 10 degrees celsius, 50 degrees farenheit, and the average low is 3 celcius/38 farenheit. Strasbourg : Average high temperature is 5 degrees celsius, or 41 degrees farenheit, and the average low is 0 celcius/32 farenheit. There are an average of five days with snowfall. What to pack It can be challenging to pack for France, particularly if you will visit multiple cities. For the most part, this is a cool or cold time of year. Be prepared for blustery weather and, possibly, snow. While the continent indeed holds endless exotic delights, it also contains certain tropical maladies that any visitor should be aware of in advance. Read on to get some preparatory knowledge on how to stay healthy in America del Sur. Enjoying your trip to its fullest always involves some amount of preparation and knowledge, so to make your planning easier weve put together some basic information outlining the general risks you might face in South America. Consult the World Health Organization (WHO) or the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for the most up-to-date information on current health risks, and ask your physician about the best courses of vaccinations and malaria prophylaxis for the area youre visiting. Food and Water: Diarrhea afflictions commonly affect visitors. Intestinal parasites and fluke illnesses have been reported in certain parts of South America, so be mindful of what you eat. Assume that all water is contaminated, and either buy bottled water (widely available in most countries) or sterilize it yourself (see Food and Water Risks for further details). Even when locals insist that tap water is safe to drink, as the adage says, its better to be safe than sorry. In most places, vegetables should be cooked and fruits peeled before eating. Luckily, most tropical fruits are of the peel variety, so have no fear and munch away on freshly peeled pineapples, mangoes, and the like. Avoid undercooked meat and seafood--the latter can be host to many bacteria that are damaging to ones health. Avoid unpasteurized milk and dairy products as well. You can sterilize milk or make powdered milk with purified water as an alternative. As an added precaution, always check the expiration date of processed food. The Elements: While temperatures range from the tropical variety to the cool climates of high altitudes, the bottom line here is that the sun is strong--really strong. The equator runs straight through Ecuador, Brazil, and Colombia, if thats any clue of how hot it gets! So cover up with sunscreen, don pants and long sleeves when you can, and wear a wide-brimmed hat to stay shaded and keep cool. Drink plenty of water--the heat and humidity will make you sweat even more, and you need to balance fluid loss with fluid intake. High Altitudes: Those trekking in the Andes, Pampas, and other mountain ranges will be treated to jaw-dropping gorgeous scenery and challenging hikes. However, visiting such high altitudes opens a whole other can of worms. For further details, read our How to Avoid Altitude Sickness tip. Health Risks: Mosquitoes abound in South America, particularly in its coastal regions and within the moist interiors of its rainforests. Insect-borne diseases, especially malaria and dengue fever, are therefore big risks. Malaria risk exists in parts of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. Risk is generally high in rural and low-lying areas; one need not worry in big cities and main tourist areas such Rio. However, its always best to check in advance to see which areas are the most at risk--consult WHOs malaria zone map when in doubt. Consult your doctor several months before your trip to determine the best course of malaria prevention for you. Yellow fever is a big problem in many parts of the continent. To check which areas are at high risk, consult WHOs map of endemic zones . Dengue fever and Chagas disease occur throughout the continent. Unfortunately, no prophylaxis for these illnesses currently exist, so follow some simple guidelines to protect yourself from mosquito bites (see Creepy, Crawly Critters for further details and advice). Filariasis, leishmaniasis, and onchocerciasis have been reported in certain parts of the continent, particularly in rural Brazil. Schistosomiasis (or bilharzia), a strain of water-borne bacteria, is prevalent in many fresh water areas; avoid swimming or paddling in these areas. Rabies is present in many parts of the continent. Snakes and leeches are often a hazard in certain areas. Hotel City Search : Republic of China Following most of Chinese mainland's occupation by Communist armies, General Chiang Kai-shek moved the Nationalist government of China's headquarters to T'ai-pei, on December 8, 1949. During the 1950s, the United States vowed to take military action against the Chinese mainland if Communist forces attacked Taiwan or the Pescadores. With extended financial and military aid from the US, during the early 1960s, Taiwan was able to build its economy. The mainlanders who had taken refuge in 1949 continued to dominate the political stage, but Taiwan was becoming isolated as countries sought to strengthen ties with the larger market in mainland China. Neither of the Chinese governments would have formal relations with any nation recognising the other. The Democratic Progressive party (DPP) continue to campaign for Taiwan's independence from mainland China, while Beijing threatens military action if this ever happens. The People's Republic of China claim Taiwan as one of its provinces and some native Taiwanese resent the claims. Posturing and flexing of navy muscle is not uncommon in the South China Sea . Language and Culture The official language of Taiwan is Mandarin, although other Chinese dialects are also spoken. The Taiwanese are mostly descendants of the Chinese who emigrated from Fujian and Guangdong provinces during the 18th and 19th centuries. The Taiwanese celebrate many ancient Chinese customs and holidays, especially the Dragon Boat Festival, the Mid-Autumn Festival, and the Feast of Lanterns. Taipei You can also call it T'ai-pei or Taibei; whatever, it's the provisional capital of the Republic of China, or Taiwan. Located on the Tanshui River, near the north coast of Taiwan, you will fly into T'aoyan International Airport. Immigrants from mainland China's Fujian Province first settled here in the 18th century, but not a lot was happening. The Japanese brought sushi to the island between 1895 and 1945, until they surrendered the island to China after World War II.
