Cheap Travel

Tim Leffel's Cheapest Destinations Tim Leffel's Cheapest Destinations Places where a fistful of dollars will pay for weeks of hotels, train rides, and meals. « More Reasons Not to Take a Cruise | Main | A Home Abroad vs. A Home at Home » November 22, 2005 "Cheap" Travel is Relative If you're not convinced that your choice of destination will have the biggest impact on your travel budget, mosey on over to the New York Times' Cheap Sleep article. It's a nice rundown on hip and stylish places that won't cost you as much as a night at the Four Seasons, but for anyone who has traveled to any of The World's Cheapest Destinations , $114 a night for a hotel with a shared bath seems downright warped. Other bargains in the article include a $107 hotel in Paris and a $124 hotel in L.A. with "Moroccan dcor." I won't go into what you can get for that amount of money in Morocco itself. Or how you could get a penthouse suite and all three meals for that price in most of Indonesia. But trust me when I say the price of a "bargain" room in these cities is near the top end of the scale in a few hundred other cities around the globe. I can attest to the fact that anything under $200 a night is definitely a deal in Manhattan, however--I was just there last week. The three of us stayed at Radio City Apartments , right off Times Square. Convenient location, a clean 2-bed room bigger than the one at the W I had last time, a kitchenette, and only $155 a night. (Plus loads of taxes, including a $3 Javitz Center tax. Funny, didn't realize I was there for a convention...) Of course meals cost a bundle, the subway's up to $2, we shared a cab from Newark Airport for $60, my inlaws got two drinks at a hotel bar for $18, going to the top of the Empire State Building is $14, yada yada yada. Before you know it, you've spent an amount of money that would last you weeks in other spots on the globe. But it's a great city, so you suck it up and keep opening the wallet. As New Yorkers will tell you though, the city is not without its deals. My daughter screamed with joy when she saw the carousel in Central Park. It put a big smile on my face too when I saw that it was only $1.25 a ride. Walking through the park was free of course, and beautiful at this time of year, with the leaves still changing colors. Speaking of free, perhaps the greatest bargain of all is the ride on the Staten Island Ferry. We timed it perfectly and saw the city from the water as the sun was going down, then the Statue of Liberty at sunset and when the torch is lit for the evening. I used to live up there and have seen it all before, but it's still magical. Customer Reviews Avg. Customer Review: Write an online review and share your thoughts with other shoppers! 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful: Good - but not exceptional , July 21, 2005 Reviewer: annqatrin from Gothenburg Sweden This is a good guide book, as all the guide books in the series, but I did expect a bit more from it. I travelled around Italy together with my husband the summer of 2005, and we used this guide book a lot. But it is a guide book, nothing more. There are quite a bit of things that have changed since the book was last edited, but this is expected. We are planning to send the findings we did to the editor, so that it can be added or changed in the next edition, perhaps. We felt that the book focused too much on churches, castles etc, and a lot of really interesting things were missed - like the local food markets, which we love to visit. There wasn't much of "different" or "special" recommendations, it was just focusing on the "What to see if you are a tourist", while what you remember are the things "sticking out". You can only look at so many churches during three weeks... You could also find that the author(s) recommended one area in the top part of a column, but further down it was the other way around. It was obvious that the text was not written by one person only, but by several, and then compiled into one lump of text. I was aware that several people helped writing the book, and for a guide book I believe that is good, but the texts should be kept separate. Now it became very obvious at times that two people with different opinion had written parts of one text. These guidebooks do not at all talk about how life is for the locals, if there are any "local speciallities" in regards to food and whine etc. Considering Italy is one of the best food countries in the world, I think this is a pity! Funny is that we actually managed to end up at one of the hotels that the book recommended, although we didn't plan for it. I didn't realise we were at the recommended place until the day after we checked in. Some parts I might want to read more carefylly next time... It was an excellent little place, though, and we really enjoyed it! So, in short: Get this guide book, but don't let it be your only guide, make sure you stop by the local touristinfo and pick up some info as well! And have fun in Italy! There is two much information on the cities and hardly anything about the beach areas or areas out of the cities. When I am on holiday I would rather have fun than read 35 pages about monks in the 13th century. Was this review helpful to you? 5 of 16 people found the following review helpful: FAB!!! , March 5, 2004 Reviewer: claudia clarke from Milton Keynes, Bucks United Kingdom I really enjoyed this book and found it very helpfull and with great tips and info to my TRIP to Italy/ Was this review helpful to you? 37 of 37 people found the following review helpful: Indispensable... , September 23, 2003 Reviewer: chrisjparr from Newcastle, Tyne and Wear United Kingdom If you're heading off on a tour of Italy, I thoroughly recommend purchasing this book. The book proved invaluable to me, offering useful accomodation information as well as detailed maps of the places I visited. My journey consisted of a tour of Italy's more famous cities- from Pisa to Florence, on to Rome and Napoli, down to Pompeii and Sorrento, eventually heading north to Venice. For this journey, the book was superb, although I have heared criticisms of the book if you are considering heading further off the beaten track. All in all, I found this book indispensable while I was in Italy, and thoroughly recommend it to anyone embarking on a city tour of Italy. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title . Don't get taken by these scams - read the alert and familiarize yourself with the tactics used. Panda Software Warns Online Shoppers to be Careful - New Scam Designed to Steal Credit Card Information Several websites have been identified offering cheap airline tickets with the aim of stealing credit card details from users Even though these sites have been identified and disabled, it is likely that others will appear offering all kinds of products Panda Software advises users to purchase from trusted sites and avoid giveaway prices Glendale, CA - April 6 2005 - Panda Software is warning users about the appearance of a new kind of online fraud. During the last few hours, several websites have been detected that try to entice users with the offer of cheap flights. However the real aim of these web pages is not to sell anything, but to get users to enter their credit card details which will then fall into the hands of cyber-crooks. The scam starts when an unsuspecting user searches for airline ticket offers with an Internet search engine, such as Google. This takes them to an Internet address offering cheap flights. The site includes a form asking the user to enter personal details, including their credit card number, expiry date and verification value (CVV). Once these details have been entered, to prolong the illusion, an error page is displayed telling the user that the transaction has been unsuccessful, and offering instructions on how to pay for the ticket by postal money order. This, in fact, means that the user could actually fall victim to the fraud twice. Firstly, through sending the criminals details of a valid credit card, with which they can carry out all kinds of transactions (transfers, payments...) and then, in addition, they could lose the money if they were to send the requested amount by money order. Until now, the websites identified -which had been disabled by the authorities- offered airline tickets, but it is highly likely that there will be many others offering any other type of "bargain" with the same objective. According to Luis Corrons, director of PandaLabs, This kind of online fraud differs from those witnessed previously. The malicious user does not contact the person interested in buying the product, but it is actually the buyer, in searching for the best prices online, who goes to the fraudulent web page. This creates a false sense of security that can lead users to proceed with the transaction. To avoid this kind of fraud Users are best advised to treat "bargains" with suspicion, and only make online purchases from trusted sites. In any event, if in doubt, it is a good idea to search for information about the website in question on the Internet. Users should be able to find opinions and experiences of other users who have used the same service, adds Corrons. The authorities have been alerted to this kind of threat and IT security companies are collaborating to protect and inform users of the dangers of this new Internet fraud.
