Once you have the basics, you might want a written guidebook to take along with you. Here are some of the best, including some specialty guidebooks for Christians, wine lovers, and, well, dummies. Note that some 2005 German Guidebooks are listed here; you'll have to pre-order them but many will be available before Christmas. 1) Rick Steves' 2005 Germany and Austria Rick Steves is the king of innexpensive, independent travel. He'll get you to the "back doors" of Europe, providing you get there before the millions of others just waiting to kick them down. So why not go for the 2005 edition before people catch on? Rick's guides aren't as comprehensive as most guides in this category, they pretty much only take you to the places Rick finds captivating. 2) Lonely Planet Germany Lonely Planet has been doing guidebooks for robust, independent travelers for a while, using a stable of fine writers rather than a single writer for each guidebook. Lots of maps, including 35 city maps and maps of each German state. 3) Frommer's Germany 2005 A bit more up-market than Lonely Planet or Rick Steves, this guide will give you the goods on the better places to stay and eat. You'll have to pre-order to get the 2005 version. 4) Let's go Germany 2005 You budget savvy travelers will get a lot out of the Let's Go guides, aimed for the younger traveler who doesn't need luxury or haute cuisine. 5) Insight Guide Germany Insight Guides are known for their photography. But do you want to carry photographs around to the places you're going to see? On the other hand, the extra weight of the slick Insight guides may not bother you if you're still undecided on a destination and want to check things out visually. 6) The Christian Traveler's Guide to Germany Ok, forget the bars and adult areas of Germany, this book is for those who wish to explore the roots of their religion. Visit the top ten Christian heritage sites in Germany, and get an overview of the religious aspects of the country's development through history. 7) Michelin Green Guide to Germany This was last updated in 2000, but if you want to know where to go for the best grub in Germany, this may be the guidebook for you. Green guides are compact and tell you just the basics. 8) Germany for Dummies Don't have a clue? Well, read our own stuff on Germany, then get a dummies book. You'll get tear-out maps and lots of best-of lists from novelist, playwright, and travel writer, Donald Olson. 9) Do as the Germans Do You'll want to know how to behave when you're in Germany, and get a few tips on the lingo. Hyde Flippo, of About's German language site, lets you in on the secrets of getting a table in a decent German restaurant or making small talk to the person across the table from you. 10) A Traveller's Wine Guide to Germany There's more to drink than beer in Germany. In fact, there are thirteen wine regions and lots of wine flowing in those restaurants and bars. Many students do not have the chance of a work placement as a formal part of their course but they do want to use their time during the vacation as an opportunity to gain invaluable experience (and supplement their finances!). At the same time many organisations approach us each year with vacancies (whether one-offs or formal internship schemes). This event brings these complementary needs together. The 2005 fair will be on Wednesday 2 November from 14:00 to 17:00. Information for visitors Vacation jobs, along part-time work, are a great way to supplement your finances and gain valuable work experience. Previous exhibitors have offered a wide spectrum of vacation opportunities from leisure camps to finance in settings ranging from volunteering to highly structured formal schemes. See our article Making the most of fair . There is no need to book: just turn up on the day. The Fair is open only to students/GradClub members of King's College London and other member institutions of The Careers Group, University of London consortium . I travelled around Italy together with my husband the summer of 2005, and we used this guide book a lot. But it is a guide book, nothing more. There are quite a bit of things that have changed since the book was last edited, but this is expected. We are planning to send the findings we did to the editor, so that it can be added or changed in the next edition, perhaps. We felt that the book focused too much on churches, castles etc, and a lot of really interesting things were missed - like the local food markets, which we love to visit. There wasn't much of "different" or "special" recommendations, it was just focusing on the "What to see if you are a tourist", while what you remember are the things "sticking out". You can only look at so many churches during three weeks... You could also find that the author(s) recommended one area in the top part of a column, but further down it was the other way around. It was obvious that the text was not written by one person only, but by several, and then compiled into one lump of text. I was aware that several people helped writing the book, and for a guide book I believe that is good, but the texts should be kept separate. Now it became very obvious at times that two people with different opinion had written parts of one text. These guidebooks do not at all talk about how life is for the locals, if there are any "local speciallities" in regards to food and whine etc. Considering Italy is one of the best food countries in the world, I think this is a pity! Funny is that we actually managed to end up at one of the hotels that the book recommended, although we didn't plan for it. I didn't realise we were at the recommended place until the day after we checked in. Some parts I might want to read more carefylly next time... It was an excellent little place, though, and we really enjoyed it! So, in short: Get this guide book, but don't let it be your only guide, make sure you stop by the local touristinfo and pick up some info as well! And have fun in Italy! There is two much information on the cities and hardly anything about the beach areas or areas out of the cities. When I am on holiday I would rather have fun than read 35 pages about monks in the 13th century. My journey consisted of a tour of Italy's more famous cities- from Pisa to Florence, on to Rome and Napoli, down to Pompeii and Sorrento, eventually heading north to Venice. For this journey, the book was superb, although I have heared criticisms of the book if you are considering heading further off the beaten track.
