Stayed in a two bedroom unit, with full length lanai overlooking fishponds and ocean. Had a great experience working with South Kohala Management, which represents condos in several properties on the Big Island. Unit was very modern, including fully equipped kitchen with washer/dryer, dishwasher, microwave, etc. Unit had two and one half baths, making for easy beach recovery. Lanais off the master bedroom, living room and dining areas. Property offered access to private "beach club", which was never crowded, had bar/restaurant for lunch and great swimming and snorkeling. Even had a daily visit from a friendly sea turtle! Complex also had a pool and jacuzzi. Condo truly exceeded our expectations. While expensive, we concluded the property and unit offered real value, luxury and comfort. Traveler rating: Kamuela: Mauna Lani Terrace Condominiums : "Old and tired" Jan 31, 2002 : Anonymous Compare prices with: Mauna Lani Terrace was recommended to me by my Grandfather as a "very nice" condominium complex near the water on the big island of hawaii. It turned out to be a very expensive collection of slightly tired condos far away from resturants and services. The beaches were small, and there was just one "lagoon" area to swim in. All in all a lot of money for very little. I think of it as a 60's solution to a captive vacation experience, like Disneyland. Mutant Reviewers from Hell do "National Lampoon's European Vacation" Mutant Reviewers from Hell do National Lampoon's European Vacation 1985 Holiday Road Summary Capsule: The Griswald family wins a trip to tour all of Europe. Justin's Rating: *GONG!* Justin's Review: The Griswalds are back and on TV... a game show, to be precise. After a lot of humiliation (not to mention french kisses) by the game show host, the wacky family wins an all-expenses paid trip to Europe. Thus, another journey is launched, and countless (well, I suppose you can count them, it's just a hyperbole people!) disasters will ensue. European Vacation is generally agreed to be the worst of the four Vacation films, and I'd have to concur. It has a lot of good moments that are unfortunately held together with the duct tape of bad plotting. By taking the Griswald family out of their semi-natural habitat and focusing more on the "ha-ha everything's foreign" aspect instead of the family themselves, we end up with just a very lackluster ride. It's a lot like one of those travel agency videos where they're trying to show you as much scenery as possible at the expense of a lot of content. Sure, Chevy Chase isn't too bad, and a fourth of the script really does seem inspired. Watch for Eric Idle (of Monty Python fame) as a very sincere Englishman who keeps apologizing every time he's hit by Clark Griswald. But for every good scene, you get three like the one where the Griswald car gets caught up in a traffic circle and cannot leave and cannot leave and cannot leave... well, you get the idea. One of the strangest and most disturbing parts of this film involve Audrey Griswald. In this movie, she's chubby going on super-chubby. Yet the filmmakers try to make her also sexy, so we end up with a kid who's fat and eats a lot yet is hit on by pretty much every guy in the film. I'm not saying fat doesn't equal unsexiness, but it's bad form for films to give a character such polar opposites (gross and sexual). Maybe it's just me (all of you out there repeat in chorus: "It's you"), but Audrey was just too bizarre in this movie. There's some sort of loose plot thread involving a certain amorous video tape of Ellen (Bevery D'Angelo) and international conspiracy, but *shrug*. Sometimes I feel like I could do an entire movie review in nothing but body language. About the only really positive thing I can say about European Vacation is that National Lampoon didn't give up on the series, and two more sequels were made, both a lot better than this movie. Didja Notice? It is revealed in the intro, on his passport, that Clark's middle name is Wilhelm. The Movie Store! European Vacation : Movie [VHS] Intermission! That's John Astin who is the host of "Pig In A Poke". For those ultimate cult fanboys out there, Astin is best known for his role of Professor Gangriene in the later three Killer Tomato movies. There is no national bus service in Spain. Many small cities in Spain have access to the larger cities through a local bus system. Routes and Timetables for the local busses are found at bus stations and stops. You can buy a ticket on the bus or in advance from tobacco shops (estancos). The two largest Bus companies serving Spain are Autocares Julia and Eurolines . Spain - Eating in Spanish Restaurants In the summer,Spanish eating habits can be dauntingfor the tourist, especially one just arriving from overseas. Lunch and dinner are served later here than in the rest of Europe, restaurants often opening as late as 3pm for lunch and 8 or 9pm for dinner. Many restaurants in metropolitan areas have started to cater to the overseas crowd and offer continuous opening hours. The traditional remedy for the lateness of meals was to eat small plates called tapas at bars that were open all day, either as a way to keep hunger away until the restaurants opened or to make a whole meal out of appetizers--not a bad wayto go. Bellying up to a Tapas bar is a great way to meet people. Many travelers report not finding enough vegetables in restaurants to keep them happy. This is not the case when you eat meals in people's homes--it's a quirk of the restaurant system. See Eating in Spain for more. Dont expect to find No Smoking sections in restaurants or bars. Tipping in Spanish Restaurants Meals includea service charge, but tipping is common. 10% is a substantial tip. Accommodations in Spain Spain has a wide range of accommodations. There are usually hotels near train stations, somebudget, a few seedy. You may inspect a hotel before committing to it. However, there are variants spoken that include Euskara, spoken in the basque regions; Catalan, spoken in parts of Spain, Andorra, France and Sardinia; Galician, and other languages. Foreign Languages for the Tourist gives a list of resources for learning just enough language to get along. Page two of that article is an account of going to language school in Perugia, Italy. Currency in Spain Spain uses the Euro--Symbol . At the time the Euro came into use, its value was setto 166.386 Spanish Pesetas. [ more on the Euro ] Spain - Siesta!
