The division hit the dust in 1989, as the ominous Berlin Wall was torn down. For travellers, Germany is all the more attractive for its leading role in the last century. But the country's also produced some of the world's most important artists, composers, writers and thinkers, and an abundance of natural beauty makes Germany one of Europe's top picks.
