The Two Capitals The most often traveled destinations in Russia are Moscow and St. Petersburg, the two great and very different cities. Moscow is the capital of Russia, vibrant and at the same time tranquil, an exaggerated version of everything you can get in Russia, as if conforming the quality of Russian character to push everything to extreme. St. Petersburg is a beautiful city of channels and impressive architecture, is completely untypical Russian city. Being the closest Russian city to Europe St.Petersburg expresses everything European Russia has to offer, but in a unique and a strange way mixing with old traditions. For those, who want to escape the busy life of the big cities, there are many small towns around Moscow (Sergiev Posad, Kolomna, Tver, Tula) and around St Petersburg (Petrodvorets, Pushkin, Zelenogorsk, Vyborg), which can give you the 'taste' of provincial life. The best time to visit the both cities is, perhaps, May, June, September, Januar and February. In May and June there are many things happening in both cities: carnivals, exhibitions, concerts, and other special events. Besides, people are happy that the colds and snows are gone and prepare to enjoy short four months of heat. In the end of June - beginning of July St. Petersburg becomes a really special place: there's daylight all day long. This period is called "White Nights" and is definitely worth seeing. In September , many people have just came back from the holidays and are relaxed and in a good mood. It means more parties and more people outside. Also, autumn is one of the most beautiful periods in Russia: yellowish and red trees, sunny weather, cool winds and the mood of change. People want to have as much fun as possible outside, before the colds start. January and February are good because there's much snow, and the city looks magic. Both cities are covered with snow and look very beautiful, like in a fairytale. City dwellers are sitting in clubs, sipping 'hot' drinks, talking and listening to music. To me, Moscow is the most interesting and beautiful in that period. Russian Province For the real Russian province the Golden Ring trip is the best. The Golden Ring is the name for the trip that stretches about 200 kilometers north-east of Moscow and back. The trip goes through Vladimir, Suzdal, Ivanovo, Kostroma, Yaroslavl, Rostov Veliky, Pereslavl. Each of these seven cities gives a unique perspective on Russian provincial life – laid-back and full of unusual contrasts. The land where the ancient Russia has started, home to many beautiful churches and cathedrals you won't see elsewhere. The best time to go is, generally, anytime, only that the most of the cultural events are happening in the summer, but, at the same time, winter puts a special charm on these little towns. Northern Russia Northern Russia is all traditional that Russia has to offer. Between Moscow and St.Petersburg there's the old Russian town of Novgorod , our personal favourite. This is perhaps the oldest Russian town and it has retained the most 'Russian feel'. Novgorod and Novgorod region is the place with beautiful nature, marvellous white stone architecture (the oldest cathedral in Russia - St.Sofia), friendly and helpful people. Novgorod for us is like an ideal of what it can be like in Russian province. Go there anytime of the year, especially that it's only 3 hours from St. Petersburg by train. If you want an exotic outdoor adventure with a lot of historical and cultural background , and you don't want to get too remote, try to go to beautiful Karelia land, which is located to the northeast of St. Petersburg. There's beautiful nature in Karelia: splendid northern forests (taiga), mountain lakes and rivers. Also, there's a famous Solovki monastery and Kizhi museum of wooden architecture. Besides, Karelia is rich with the history of Finn-Ugor and Slavic tribes that lived together on this land centuries before and at some places you can see prehistoric rock carvings and structures. Trans-Siberian Trip One of the famous Russia's gems and mysteries is Siberia land. Siberia is the same distance from Moscow as France, for example. But thanks to the Trans-Siberian railway it's not so inaccessible as it could be. Trans- Siberian railway stretches east from Moscow to Ural, Western Siberia (Novosibirsk), Eastern Siberia (Irkutsk and Baikal lake). Then one branch goes around Mongolia to China and is called Trans-Manchurian railway, and the other branch goes through Mongolia (Ulan-Bataar) to China. The final destination for both is Beijing. Trans-Siberian is the longest railway in the world and probably one of the most interesting and tough: imagine riding in the train for six days seeing various landscapes pass in front of your eyes... Only this way one can see the transformation from West to East (or vice versa) smoothly and feel the distance and the land. Siberia Until recently, Siberia was closed to foreigners and was hard to get into. Now it's all changed: take a train along the Trans-Siberian and hop off where you want along the way. Perhaps, it's not so easy to travel around there, and industrial Siberian cities can by no means be interesting to stay in for more than a few days, but the beautiful and legendary Baikal lake and Altai mountains make the trip there surely worthwhile. Besides, the unique landscape and remoteness of the area provide inexpensive opportunities for the kind of outdoor activities that can't be performed elsewhere. Far East The Far East is the most remote area in Russia, closer to Alaska, than to Moscow. Only a few people went to Kamchatka peninsula, but those who did, came back mesmerized. The land of volanoes, geysers, beautiful view, the ocean, the nature unfolding itself in front of one's eyes is very seducing. Kamchatka was closed for a long time for the travelers, and remoteness of the area was a great obstacle too. Now it is still a very militarized place (there's a border with the US), and the main town - Petropavlovsk - is a typical Soviet concrete and dull place, but just a just few kilometers away there's the untouched volcanoe land stretching far north. But in those days we sacrificed lots--sleeping in train cars and in train stations and staying at fleabag hotels featuring one bathroom every 12 rooms or so. But when you think about it, those memories are priceless. So the Euro is up this year and that vacation you planned is likely to cost you more. The trick is to have a great time without sacrificing anything important. Here are a dozen tips that just might save you money. Tickets: Save Transportation Cost with Open Jaws Want to see a lot of Europe? Plan you trip in one direction, say from London to Rome. Then buy an Open Jaw Ticket, say landing in London and returning from Rome. Plan to Visit the Cheaper Countries Cheapest countries in Western Europe: Portugal and Greece, although the Euro and European monetary policies are tending toward equalizing the price differential in these poorer countries. Transportation: Where to find Cheap(er) Gasoline Last year it was Spain, where gasoline was frequently found at less than 80 Euro cents per liter. Compare this with a cost over 1 Euro for many other destinations. (3.79 liters = 1 gallon, so .80 Euros per liter = 2.99 per gallon.) Gasoline in Europe is expensive, but the automobiles in Europe are generally more efficient, so a balance is achieved. Interesting tidbit: "Compare the price of gasoline ($1.75/gal) with Coca Cola (~$2.50/gal). Gasoline first requires crude oil to be explored and found, than extracted from the ground, shipped to a refinery, refined, then distributed and ultimately pumped into your tank. Meanwhile, Coca Cola is essentially colored, sugared tap water." Cheap Transportation: Train Italy is still known for its extensive rail network and low ticket prices. If you are traveling around Italy, a rail pass may not net you much savings. Just buy your tickets as you need them at the ticket window or the ticketing kiosks. Admissions: Card it! Most large cities in Europe have discount cards that allow you to visit many museums at a discounted price. Check them out when you go to the local tourist information center--and remember that many have a time limit which may make them less useful to folks who don't want to see lots of museums in a couple days. Trains: Trolling for Bargains When you go up to the ticket window in a European train station, be ready to spout off your destination, whether you want a one-way or round trip, and the departure time of the train you've selected. If you're getting your tickets in advance, ask at the window if there are other trains that might be cheaper that day--you never know. I've saved up to 60% of the price of a ticket just by taking a slightly slower train an hour later than the one I'd originally chosen. Renting Cars: Rent or lease a Diesel Specify a Diesel car when you rent or lease. In many countries, diesel fuel is subsidized, and costs far less than gasoline. It is also widely available, no need to worry about finding it. Many turbo diesels get great gas mileage as well, sweetening the deal. Leasing, or buy-back deals, can also save you money if you're renting for more than 17 days. Lodging: Rent a house or Apartment Vacation rentals are becoming more popular. You'll get room to stretch out and a kitchen to cook in, saving tons of cash over eating out all the time. Hotels: Share a bath. No, I don't mean bathe with someone else, although that can save you money too. There are still some one and two star hotels in Europe with bathrooms down the hall. In many countries, especially expensive ones like Switzerland, sharing a bath can cut the price of a room almost in half. Look for small, locally owned, one and two star hotels or a family hostel. Most of them won't have an Internet presence, so you might have to hoof it a bit to find one, or ask at the tourist information point in or near a train station. Eating: Picnic with the help of an Open Air Market At least once a week most towns in Europe feature a traveling market. Even if you don't have cooking facilities, you can usually buy cured meats, olives, cheeses, roast chicken and pork, and bread, enough for a great picnic and a good way to try the local cuisine. Eating: Have your "big" meal at mid day In countries like Spain, restaurants offer full three course meals, often with wine or beer and coffee, for a set price at lunch time, often for less than 10 Euros. You'll see the notice on restaurant windows. And remember, that price is all inclusive; nobody's gonna add tax, and service is included. Eating: Follow the Workers Those guys in the paint-splattered overalls know where to get a bargain. Don't look just for a restaurant, look for these guys wolfing down huge amounts of food--they know where to get it cheap. Travel to St. Petersburg, Russia's Elegant Former Capital City According to U.N. statistics, St. Petersburg, Russia is the eighth most visited tourist site in the world, with several million people visiting the city every year. Why do visitors flock to this former capital of Russia? St. Petersburg is a traveler’s delight, famous for its summertime White Nights, its marvelously designed old city section, beautiful buildings on the banks of the Neva River, and its many churches, museums, gardens, theaters and activities. The city's turbulent history also draws visitors. Key Points about St. Petersburg Tsar Peter the Great established St. Petersburg in 1703, with the founding of the Peter and Paul Fortress on May 27th of that year. While some may have wondered why the tsar chose to put his namesake city in a swamp prone to flooding, Peter delighted in the city's strategic position on the Gulf of Finland as an entry to Europe. By 1712, the city became the capital of Russia. Over the years, the city changed names to Petrograd and Leningrad but now has regained its original name. Young by European terms, the city is architecturally stunning, with many cathedrals, museums, monuments and more than 500 bridges over the river Neva. Nevsky Prospect is where most tourists go, as it is the main thoroughfare through the city’s historic center. St. Petersburg has two high seasons: May through July and the spectacular winter season between the New Year’s holiday through January. St. Petersburg is famous for its White Nights of summer when daylight never really goes away, particularly between June 11 and July 2. St. Petersburg has a deserved reputation for world-class attractions. The city is home to the State Hermitage Museum, the Mariinsky Opera and Ballet Theater, St. Isaac’s Cathedral, and the palace of Peter the Great. The city hosts annual art exhibits and music and film festivals, including the Viva Russian Cinema festival. Entry Russia requires that most foreign visitors obtain a visa. You cannot get a visa at the border so make sure you get one in plenty of time from a Russian embassy or consulate or an authorized travel agency. You will also need an official invitation, best obtained from an authorized travel agency. Major Attractions Nevsky Prospect has been St. Petersburg’s heart since the days of Peter the Great. It’s 4.5 km of shops, hotels, performance venues, and lively activity. Many of the attractive buildings have been recently renovated. The State Heritage Museum contains large collections of art from prehistoric to modern times. One building belonging to the museum is the Winter Palace, former home of the tsars. The State Russian Museum is the world’s largest museum of Russian art. The Peter and Paul Fortress was St. Petersburg’s first structure and today houses a number of museums and the Peter and Paul Cathedral where all Russian tsars since Peter, except Nicholas II, are buried. Peter’s Cabin is the city’s first residence. A wooden structure built for Peter the Great’s use, it contains artifacts from his time. St. Isaac’s Cathedral is the world’s third largest domed cathedrals. Featuring mosaics, red granite columns, loads of precious stones, and a gold-covered cupola, the cathedral is major landmark.
