Germany is becoming ever more attractive to visitors from around the globe, above all because of a plethora of cultural events, which take place throughout the year Music-land Germany is the homeland of many of the world's greatest composers: Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Handel, Mendelssohn, Wagner, to name just a few, were born in Germany. Among Germany's traditional events and happenings, the Christmas Markets are a great attractions for attract visitors from near and far. Munich, Nuremberg, Stuttgart, Dresden, Leipzig, Cologne, Bremen, M?, Frankfurt are but a few of these magical markets, some of which date back to the Middle Ages. All major cities and most towns have Christmas markets during the Advent season. The new and modern Germany, its cities and their beautiful natural surroundings have become a favorite destination for people of all ages and diverse backgrounds. Berlin, the fascinating capital, with its great museums, theaters and restaurants, is one of the most sought-after metropolises in Europe. Great cities such as Munich, Hamburg and Dresden also offer extraordinary cultural and culinary fare. Last but not least, Germany's great tourist routes, among them the Romantic Road, the Castle Road and the Fairy Tale Road, make traveling in Germany an unforgettable, rewarding experience. Germany is historical, modern, busy, lazy, laid-back, quiet, musical, tasteful, dynamic, exhausting, hilly, flat, green, picturesque, sporty, poetic, beer-loving, wunderbar. Germany is a many-sided country. And the opportunities for vacationing in Germany are just as varied. Whether you are underway with family and friends, or on business, are seeking romanticism or planning a city trip, want to actively work out or just be healthily cosseted, take part in courses or seek out culture - all these different wishes can be ideally fulfilled in Germany. Germany's many modern cities stem from the time when it consisted of countless small states. The numerous kings, princes and bishops tried to outshine each other in fields like science, culture and architecture. These power politics were not restricted to the cornerstones for the diverse cityscapes. They were also responsible for the pulsating life in today's Germany. No other European country has as many shopping malls, cultural highlights, opera houses and theaters of world standard, universities, scientific and industrial centers, international airports, congress and trade fair centers distributed so evenly throughout the entire country. There is the old and new capital Berlin, speeding on its way to become a mega-metropolis. The 15 state capitals, the innumerable cultural gems, the business and commercial centers. German cities offer that which makes the whole country so appealing: endless variety. The first associations of Berlin in a nutshell: capital of Prussia, cultural metropolis of the twenties, Reichstag, Berlin wall, reunification, old and new capital. But Berlin is more than that, Today, it is also the gateway to eastern Europe. Berlin is culture. Only Berlin has three opera houses and two concert halls, 35 large and hundreds of independent theaters, numerous variety and musical theaters. Berlin is relaxation. Hardly any other capital has so many parks, forests and recreational lakes and such lovely surroundings for walking, cycling and resting. Berlin is nightlife. In 300 "in" places, 1500 bars and countless clubs and discos one can turn night into day without any threat of closing time. One can dance to techno and to pop and pub crawl from designer bars via beer gardens to quaint backyard pubs. Berlin is a museum. The many big and small galleries display from modern to ancient art. Different epochs of history and fields of interest can be viewed in 130 museums. The streets of Charlottenburg, Kreuzberg, Mitte and Prenzlauerberg invite you to take part in their cultural scene. Berlin is a market. No other city offers so many art, antique and flea markets, and weekly fruit & vegetable markets for culinary shopping pleasure. But despite its many superlatives, Berlin is still a regular city. The subway is sometimes late, the weather occasionally fickle and the people now and then irritable. But that's what makes Berlin sympathetic. Finding your way around Germany is pretty easy. Many Germans speak English and are pleased to help visitors. Still, there are a few things it is helpful to know before arriving here. Select exactly the components you want in your vacation. We stock Spain road atlases and maps by GeoCenter , the Michelin , Freytag&Berndt and Insight Guides , which all go down to minor road detail and often include street plans of major cities and towns. If you are visiting a particular region of Spain, the availability of high quality Provincial Maps produced by the Instituto Geogrfico Nacional makes it more convenient to buy the one sheet you will require. They are a convenient scale and size and carry tourist information. We stock detailed topographic maps for the popular walking areas of Southern Spain, the Pyrenees, the Way of St James and the Picos de Europa produced by Editorial Alpina , Rando Editions , Editorial Penibetica , Instituto de Cartografia de Andalucia and Adrados Ediciones . Catalonia has its own Survey, Institut Cartogrfic de Catalunya , which produces some of the best topographic mapping in the world. We regularly keep sheets covering the most popular areas in stock but can provide all on order within a fortnight. Less up-to-date and a bit slower in coming in are the Spanish Military Survey sheets, which cover the whole of the country at 1:25,000. They can come in handy for areas not mapped by other commercial publishers and the popular sheets, mostly covering the Sierra Nevada and Southern Costas region are updated more regularly. You will find grids that will help you choose the sheet covering the area you require. Look out for the coverage images and the samples of cartography we add to the text description of thematic tourist maps as they will provide you with extra information to choose the right map for your needs. All available Time Out Guides to cities are regular stock as well as regional guides by the other major publishers. The popular walking regions are covered by titles from Cicerone and Trailblazer . The Way of St James is covered by various guides, some in its full extent, some dedicated to one of the routes to Santiago de Compostela. Special interests such as gastronomy, cycling and birdwatching are all provided for as well. As mentioned above, we also stock popular walking maps for Spain, ideal for planning your holiday route. Among the accommodation guides we stock, are titles exclusive to Stanfords in the UK, such as the Official Guide to Campsites and the Official Guide to Hotels by the Spanish Tourist Office, Turespaña . Our travel literature selection includes classics such as Gerald Brennan's South From Granada , an affectionate account of life in the Alpujarras after the First World War, Chris Stewart's bestselling Driving Over Lemons , about how he and his family left the UK for life on Andalusian farm and Robert Hughes learned portrait of Barcelona as well as worthy recent titles analizying contemporary Spanish society and culture. But with thoughtful preparation, you can ensure a safe and comfortable trip for everyone. The ASPCA urges pet owners to think twice about flying their pets on commercial airlines, especially if they plan on checking them in as cargo. The Air Transport Association has reported that in the past, approximately 5,000 pets—or 1 percent of the companion animals are flown on commercial planes—have been injured, lost or killed during transport. "Unless your animal is small enough to fit under your seat and you can bring him or her in the cabin, the ASPCA recommends pet owners to not fly their animal," says Lisa Weisberg, ASPCA Senior Vice President of Government Affairs and Public Policy. If pet owners have already committed to transporting their pets on commercial airlines, the ASPCA is offering the following top ten tips for safe air travel with your pet: 1. Make an appointment with your pet's veterinarian for a check-up, and make sure all vaccinations are up-to-date. Obtain a health certificate from your veterinarian dated within 10 days of departure. 2. Make sure your pet is wearing a collar and an identification tag. Breakaway collars are best for cats. The collar should also include destination information in case your pet escapes. 3. Book a direct flight whenever possible. This will decrease the chances that your pet is left on the tarmac during extreme weather conditions or mishandled by baggage personnel. 4. Purchase a USDA-approved shipping crate that is large enough for your pet to stand, sit and turn around in comfortably. Shipping crates can be purchased from many pet supply stores and airlines. 5. Write the words "Live Animal" in letters at least one inch tall on top of and at least one side of the crate. Use arrows to prominently indicate the upright position of the crate. On the top of the crate, write the name, address and telephone number of your pet's destination point, and whether you will be accompanying him or if someone else is picking him up. Make sure that the door is securely closed, but not locked, so that airline personnel can open it in case of an emergency. Line the crate bottom with some type of bedding—shredded paper or towels— to absorb accidents. 6. Affix a current photograph of your pet to the top of the crate for identification purposes. Should your pet escape from the carrier, this could be a lifesaver. You should also carry a photograph of your pet. 7. The night before you leave, make sure you’ve frozen a small dish or tray of water for your pet. This way, it can’t spill during loading, and will melt by the time he’s thirsty. Tape a small pouch, preferably cloth, of dried food outside the crate. Airline personnel will be able to feed your pet in case he gets hungry on long-distance flights or a layover. 8. Tranquilizing your pet is generally not recommended, as it could hamper his breathing. Check with your veterinarian first. 9. Tell every airline employee you encounter, on the ground and in the air, that you are traveling with a pet in the cargo hold. This way, they’ll be ready if any additional considerations or attention is needed. 10. If the plane is delayed, or if you have any concerns about the welfare of your pet, insist that airline personnel check the animal whenever feasible. In certain situations, removing the animal from the cargo hold and deplaneing may be warranted. | Powered By Convio Print | Tell A Friend | Contact | Site Map | Legal Info | Jobs | 2005 The ASPCA
