But with thoughtful preparation, you can ensure a safe and comfortable trip for everyone. The ASPCA urges pet owners to think twice about flying their pets on commercial airlines, especially if they plan on checking them in as cargo. The Air Transport Association has reported that in the past, approximately 5,000 pets—or 1 percent of the companion animals are flown on commercial planes—have been injured, lost or killed during transport. "Unless your animal is small enough to fit under your seat and you can bring him or her in the cabin, the ASPCA recommends pet owners to not fly their animal," says Lisa Weisberg, ASPCA Senior Vice President of Government Affairs and Public Policy. If pet owners have already committed to transporting their pets on commercial airlines, the ASPCA is offering the following top ten tips for safe air travel with your pet: 1. Make an appointment with your pet's veterinarian for a check-up, and make sure all vaccinations are up-to-date. Obtain a health certificate from your veterinarian dated within 10 days of departure. 2. Make sure your pet is wearing a collar and an identification tag. Breakaway collars are best for cats. The collar should also include destination information in case your pet escapes. 3. Book a direct flight whenever possible. This will decrease the chances that your pet is left on the tarmac during extreme weather conditions or mishandled by baggage personnel. 4. Purchase a USDA-approved shipping crate that is large enough for your pet to stand, sit and turn around in comfortably. Shipping crates can be purchased from many pet supply stores and airlines. 5. Write the words "Live Animal" in letters at least one inch tall on top of and at least one side of the crate. Use arrows to prominently indicate the upright position of the crate. On the top of the crate, write the name, address and telephone number of your pet's destination point, and whether you will be accompanying him or if someone else is picking him up. Make sure that the door is securely closed, but not locked, so that airline personnel can open it in case of an emergency. Line the crate bottom with some type of bedding—shredded paper or towels— to absorb accidents. 6. Affix a current photograph of your pet to the top of the crate for identification purposes. Should your pet escape from the carrier, this could be a lifesaver. You should also carry a photograph of your pet. 7. The night before you leave, make sure you’ve frozen a small dish or tray of water for your pet. This way, it can’t spill during loading, and will melt by the time he’s thirsty. Tape a small pouch, preferably cloth, of dried food outside the crate. Airline personnel will be able to feed your pet in case he gets hungry on long-distance flights or a layover. 8. Tranquilizing your pet is generally not recommended, as it could hamper his breathing. Check with your veterinarian first. 9. Tell every airline employee you encounter, on the ground and in the air, that you are traveling with a pet in the cargo hold. This way, they’ll be ready if any additional considerations or attention is needed. 10. If the plane is delayed, or if you have any concerns about the welfare of your pet, insist that airline personnel check the animal whenever feasible. Tuesday December 27, 2005 | permalink 2006 Winter Olympic Update According to Northern Italy's Torino 2006 Blog , the Olympic Village in Turin is complete and ready for the Winter Olympics starting in February. The village has 750 apartments as well as service buildings and will be converted to residential and student housing following the games. Meanwhile, the Olympic torch is spending the Christmas holidays with friends and family in Sicily and will resume its travels on December 26. The travel route will take the torch into southern Italy where it will arrive in Naples on New Year's Eve. Naples has one of the best New Year's Eve fireworks displays in Italy. Sunday December 04, 2005 | permalink Florence Hotel Recommendation I've just returned from Florence where I stayed in a very nice and comfortable 4-star hotel for just a little more than I paid last November for a cramped and smoky 2-star with a terrible bathroom! The Hotel Adler Cavalieri is conveniently located, has a helpful English-speaking staff, and is very quiet. Both the common rooms and bedrooms are attractive and welcoming. I would definitely stay here again! The hotel also gave us a great restaurant recommendation where we enjoyed a wonderful and relaxing dinner. The Club Culinario Toscano da Osvaldo , although centrally located, is a little difficult to find but well worth the search. This was definitely one of the best meals I've had in Florence! Honduras is a small country in Central America bordering the Caribbean Sea, between Guatemala and Nicaragua, and bordering the Gulf of Fonseca (North Pacific Ocean), between El Salvador and Nicaragua. It has a population of approximately 7 million persons. Honduras was once part of the Mayan civilization that spread southwards from the Yucatán peninsula and throughout most of Central America. Christopher Columbus visited Honduras in 1502 on his third voyage to the new world, and the country was subsequently colonized by Spain for several centuries. On independence in 1821, Honduras joined the Central American Federation, but this union did not last long. Honduras severed ties several years later with the Federation and became fully independent. The Honduran people are mainly mestizo, an ethnic mix of native Indian, Spanish and other nationalities. Visitors can expect to be pleasantly surprised by the hospitality extended to them by most Hondurans. The official language is Spanish, although English is widely spoken in the major tourist areas. The climate of Honduras is mostly tropical. It is hot and humid on the Caribbean coast, hot and dry in the interior plains, with cooler temperatures in the central mountain regions. The rainy season extends from June to October. Honduras offers a wide range of different vacation experiences. It offers some great venues for snorkeling and diving, many Mayan archaeological ruins and treasures, some beautiful National Parks and wildlife sanctuaries, pristine uncrowded beaches, and much more. Tegucigalpa Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, became the most important mining center in Central America during colonial times. It got its name from the ancient Nahuatl language which translated means "silver mountain". It is located in a large valley about 1000m (3280ft) above sea level and surrounded by a ring of mountains covered in pine trees. Because of the altitude of the city, the climate is very pleasant. Tegucigalpa has a population of about 800,000 people. The Boulevard Morazán, also known as "la zona viva", is the commercial heart of Tegucigalpa. It is a modern bustling district where you will find many of the very best restaurants, bars and shops in town. The Historical Center of the city is very interesting. Here you will find the domed 18th-century Central Park Cathedral, which features exquisite baroque architecture and fine art treasures. The legislative palace, built on stilts, is also located in this area, as well as the old Presidential Palace, which is now a museum. La Tigra National Park Located near Tegucigalpa is the magnificent La Tigra National Park, one of the most beautiful places in Honduras. Located at an altitude of 2260m, the park covers an area of 230 square kilometers of lush cloud forest that is home to monkeys, ocelots, pumas, and other wildlife. Orchids, arborescent ferns, and over 250 species of birds can also be found in the park. Bay Islands The Bay Islands of Roatan, Utila and Guanaja, located 50km (30mi) off the north coast of Honduras, offer great snorkeling and diving, and some of the most spectacular underwater vistas you will find anywhere in the world, with enormous stands of black coral, brilliantly colored sponges and delicate blue bell tunicates, colorful corals, sponges and tropical marine life. These lush islands are famous for their barrier reef, which is the second largest in the world. Mayan Archaeological Sites Numerous Mayan archaeological sites are scattered throughout Honduras. The most famous is the Copan Ruins, located in the western part of Honduras. Discovered in 1570 by Diego García de Palacio, the Copan Ruins are one of the most important sites of the ancient Mayan civilization, and were not excavated until the 19th century. Visitors to the site can view the many Mayan monuments and buildings, and also get a glimpse of the living areas and life style of the ancient Mayas.
