Tokyo Disneyland first opened to the public at Urayasu, just outside Tokyo on 15th April 1983, twelve years after The Magic Kingdom opened at Walt Disney World, and twenty eight years after the original Magic Kingdom theme park opened at Disneyland in Anaheim California. After the considerable success of Disneyland, and later the Walt Disney World resort in Florida, The Disney Company were approached by various countries, all eager to share in the tourist industry the Disney theme parks sparked. In Japan, The Oriental Land Company owned a sufficiently large enough parcel of land that had been reclaimed from Tokyo Bay, which was to be used for recreational purposes. The area also satisfied the other key requirement for Disney, in that it had a large local population within a 30 mile radius. The Japanese were frequent visitors to Disneyland, and subsequently to Walt Disney World, and so it was decided that it would make an ideal location for a third Disney theme park, which would be built along the same lines as the previous two existing Disney theme parks, rather than building a park with a distinct Oriental theme. The weather in the Tokyo Bay area however is far more changable than in Anaheim or Orlando, so the Disney Imagineers planned a glass-roofed World Bazaar area instead of the usual Main Street to greet visitors when they first entered the new park. The attractions were also designed with more covered areas than at the other Disney parks. One of the unique things about Tokyo Disneyland is that the various lands are not accessed by the central hub, but instead by a series of paths that branch off of the Main Street. The one main concession to the fact that it was Disney's first major theme park outside of the USA is the "Meet the World" attraction, that uses Audio Animatronics to deal with Japanese History. The now standard attractions of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Star Tours, and Splash Mountain have all been added to the park since it was initially opened, and as a result Tokyo Disneyland regularly attracts more than 10 million guests each year. Tickets for the park can be bought from several locations, but are probably best bought at the main park entrance. Unlike the original Disneyland in Anaheim, and later Walt Disney World in Florida, Tokyo Disneyland doesn't have it's own Monorail system, however if monorail rumours are to be believed this may soon change. Dresden's cultural treasures were famously and tragically all but destroyed by the February 1945 firebombing and again endangered just last summer by the flood of the century, but every time I go there it seems that there are more jewels to admire. The view of the restored Semper Opera House , palatial museum and gallery complex named the Zwinger , and the Brhl Terrace along the bank of the Elbe is stunning, especially illuminated in the evening. TRAVEL TIPS About The Maldives The Maldives is situated in the heart of the Indian Ocean. There are 1,190 islands within the archipelago-consisting of 26 atolls and spread around a 90,000 m 2 area. The islands are a few metres above sea level and only about 199 islands are inhabited. Marco Polo has called the islands "the flower of the Indies..." There is an abundance of marine flora and fauna, with over 200 species of coral. The ocean-has a great variety of fish, grey reef sharks, dolphins, butterflyfish, parrotfish, surgeonfish, Vermillion rock cod, giant leatherback turtles, moray eels, lionfish, scorpionfish... and the list goes on. There are historical and archaeological records which indicate the Maldives have been inhabited for well over 5,000 years. The Maldives is a free independent country. Getting There Many major airlines fly to the Maldives. It is 11 hours flying time from London, one hour from Colombo and around four hours from Dubai, Karach'i, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Entry All visitors must have a valid passport. For visitors from yellow fever infected areas, an international certificate of inoculation is required. No visa is required in advance. A tourist visa of 30 days will be issued to all visitors with valid travel documents. All Visitors who enter the Maldives should be in possession of a return air ticket and at least US$30 ,per intended day of stay. It is advisable that all visitors have confirmed hotel reservations before arrival. Language Divehi is the official language of the Maldives, and English is the working language used-by the government offices and within the tourism industry. Climate The Maldives enjoys a warm tropical climate all year round with temperatures varying from 33 .3°C to 26.3°C. The annual rainfall is around 29 cm. This is a destination that is always in season. Time The Maldives is five hours ahead, of Greenwich Mean Time, and half an hour behind India and Sri Lanka. Currency The Maldivian currency is Rufiyaa (RF) which is divided into 100 Laari (L). Coins in use are 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50 Laari and one Rufiyaa.
