After working six months in Scotland and England, I realized that my initial financial forecast was too optimistic. I didnt want to leave without touring Europe, but I could not afford to travel by train. So I looked around for alternatives and found two bus passes that I could afford: Eurolines Europass and the Busabout pass . Eurolines Europass is less expensive than Busabout (and offers fewer perks), but both passes cost less than comparable rail passes. For example, here are the current rates for the Europass. The current rates for the Busabout pass are listed here . The main advantage of Busabout versus Europass and Eurail is additional convenience. Busabout will drop you off at hostels and help you book rooms in advance. Eurolines provides an external link for booking accommodations online via their site. Both bus passes let you travel to a few countries that a Eurail pass does not include. For example, with Europass you can visit the following countries . Busabout, does not offer quite as many country destinations, but it lets you visit more smaller destinations, as well as packages to Morocco, Croatia and the Greek Islands. Ultimately, comfort is the main factor to consider when deciding whether to travel more expensively by train or more cheaply by bus. Buses are often crowded and are about as comfortable as they are in the U.S. On the upside, European bus stations are far nicer than in the U.S., and buses are used by more people. Compared with the train travel Ive done in Europe, bus passengers seem to socialize more than rail travelers. Perhaps more importantly, most bus passengers are locals. All of our drivers were locals, and they generally provided interesting bits of information. You can buy a Busabout pass online. Their web site, www.busabout.com , also contains maps and stop information. The Eurolines pass can be bought online as well and a network map is available. An audio interview is available at www.eurolines.com - just click for the Podcast. KOKE MILLER-THOMAS has lived in several countries. Currently she is a social worker for the state of Texas. Incoming tourist receipts will increase in 2004 as a result, up by 12% on 2003. The recovery in 2004 will, however, be partial and, compared to 2002, the number of arrivals will be 5% lower in 2004. The recovery of incoming tourist receipts was weaker due to a fall in average receipts per visitor and, in 2004, total incoming receipts are forecast to be more than 8% lower than in 2002. Similarly, outbound tourism is expected to see a partial recovery in 2004. The number of departures will increase by 16.5%, taking the total to 6.9 million outgoing visitors, 6% fewer than in 2002. Outgoing expenditure will rise by 10% in 2004, bringing the total to NT$333.8 billion, 6.5% less than in 2002. Outgoing tourist expenditure will see a stronger rebound than incoming tourist receipts as average spending per outgoing visitor is expected to fall less in 2004 than incoming receipts per visitor. The introduction of the 2-day weekend and the "Civil Travel Card" continues to push market sales growth in the domestic tourism industry. Food and spas are the two most important elements in domestic tourism for local tourists. Over the 1999-2004 period the internet increased its importance in the overall tourism industry, from an information provider to a comprehensive platform for all travel-related needs, including booking and purchasing, espceially for airline tickets, accomodation, car rental, major attractions and a variety of holiday packages. The combination of price competition for outbound travel and the increasing number of incoming travellers has helped to narrow the balance of tourism payments over the review period. The deficit reached its highest point in 2000 at over NT$226 million, and narrowed to NT$173.5 million in 2003, its lowest point. Political instability, contagious diseases and natural disasters have impacted directly on Taiwan and caused immediate damage to the travel and tourism industry over the review period. The presidential election in early 2004 and the following conflicts between the two leading parties resulted in a sharp decline in the number of domestic trips, with most tourist attractions suffering as a result. The SARS outbreak in 2003 led to huge vacancy levels in hotels and shortfalls in airline bookings. Furthermore, a devastating typhoon in the third quarter of the year resulted in a booking rate of less than 20% in affected areas during the peak season. Private accommodation is the fastest-growing travel accommodation type in Taiwan in both number of outlet terms and value sales terms. The overwhelming popularity of private accommodation over the review period threatened other travel accommodation operators. Such strong competition has led many large players to restructure their business operations and to upgrade facilities in recent years. Themed rail trips and pre-booked packages offered by airline companies are gaining in popularity. The number of trips taken using land transport made what was already the largest area also the fastest growing. Sales generated by bus/coach, however, are growing slowly, due to high car ownership levels and price competition among bus/coach operators. Two leading players in the car rental market, Kaplus Co Ltd and Hotai Leasing & Rental Co, account for over 50% of total market sales. Both companies have adopted aggressive marketing campaigns both in advertising and through forming strategic alliances. Online travel retailers are one of the most important areas in e-commerce and the fastest-growing travel retailer type since 1999. EzTravel is the most dynamic player in the travel and tourism industry with an aggressive approach to forming strategic alliances. Car rental and travel retail are expected to fuel sales growth for Taiwans travel and tourism industry over the forecast period. While internet transactions are forecast to grow healthily into 2009. The Windstar Cruises passenger sees the world from a romantic sailing ship with luxurious accommodations, a casual yet elegant atmosphere, and exquisite service and cuisine. Well known for cruising off the beaten path, throughout 2002 Windstar Cruises celbrated our 15th year of sailing to exotic locales and hidden harbors that larger ships cannot access. These stately vessels turn heads from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean to the Far East. The Windstar Cruise Ships In late 1986, the first commercial sailing vessel built in 60 years slipped out of a French dry-dock in Le Havre. Although the towering sails echoed a bygone era of explorers, the msy Wind Star, with its sleek lines and computerized controls, was revolutionary in concept and design. Windstar''s ships are officially masted-sail-yachts (msy), but the designation belies the vessels unique rigging. Unfurling in two minutes at the push of a button, billowing white sails reach to the sky. All functions are operated from the bridge by computer micro-chips and navigational devices. The unusual "open-bridge" operation allows guests to drop by and acquaint themselves with the veteran captains and officers who demonstrate the ship''s intriguing capabilities to modern day explorers. The 148-passenger Wind Star was joined by sister ships the msy Wind Song in 1987, and msy Wind Spirit in 1988. A new era in luxury cruising was now being pioneered by Windstar Cruises. Nearly a decade later in 1998, the 308-passenger msy Wind Surf was acquired by Windstar. Sailing originally as Club Med I, the Wind Surf was built in 1990 in the same shipyard to strikingly similar specifications as her sister ships, making her a perfect match for the four fleet family. Windstar Cruises Shipboard Life Windstar''s unique concept of sailing has lead the cruise industry in the luxury small ship, casual attire, and alternative dining arenas. Pioneering and refining these concepts has earned Windstar an excellent reputation and market niche, winning the allegiance of a new generation of contemporary cruise vacationers, one-third of whom are first-time cruisers. Teak decking, rich wood interiors, an attentive service staff, intimate surroundings, eclectic artwork, exceptional signature cuisine featuring both light and vegetarian menu selections, and an extensive wine list are some of the extraordinary elements which have become synonymous with Windstar. Features unique to the Wind Surf include 31 deluxe suites, a Business/Internet Center, The Bistro, and the 10,000 square foot WindSpa offering a full array of spa treatments, consultative, health and fitness programs. Windstar Cruises Passengers are cradled in comfort as all staterooms and suites offer ocean views, sitting area, TV, VCR, CD player, safe, mini-bar/refrigerator, international direct- dial phones, bathroom with toiletries, hair dryer, plush robes, and plenty of closet space. The library on board stocks an array of international newspapers, books and games, as well as a multi-media selection of more than 500 video titles and compact discs available for complimentary check-out. Carrying just 148 to 308 guests, Windstar cruise ships exude a private yacht-like atmosphere creating camaraderie and lasting friendships between fellow sailors. Every day aboard Windstar brings the promise of new horizons and harbors to explore. Windstar Cruises Destinations and Activities Newly announced destinations for 2003 include Northern Europe, Baltic, Malta and Tunisia. New itineraries complement tried and true Windstar favorites such as the Greek and Turkish Isles, Mediterranean, Caribbean, Virgin Islands, French Polynesia and Trans-Atlantic crossings. An interesting mix of shore excursions and complimentary water sports activities are available at each destination. Passengers may find themselves slicing through Caribbean waters aboard an actual America''s Cup racing yacht, or exploring archaeological ruins in Greece, the "Cradle of Civilization." Water buffs can enjoy complimentary water-skiing, windsurfing, snorkeling, kayaking and "banana" boat rides from the ship''s aft Water Sports Platform. Windstar's cruise vacations offer a sea-side window on the world, combining the refinement of a luxury hotel with a moveable feast of cultural experiences. Seattle-based Windstar Cruises operates the 308-passenger Wind Surf and 148- passenger Wind Star and Wind Spirit. Like the first, WWII ended in tears for the Germans, as their country came into Allied control, who decided it'd be a good idea to split the country and its capital, Berlin, into the Soviet East and American-British-French West. The division hit the dust in 1989, as the ominous Berlin Wall was torn down. The ensuing decade and a half has seen Germany pick up the remains of a violent century, as it enjoys being a united Germany once again. For travellers, Germany is all the more attractive for its leading role in the last century. But the country's also produced some of the world's most important artists, composers, writers and thinkers, and an abundance of natural beauty makes Germany one of Europe's top picks.
