Nate Johnson (played by Cedric the Entertainer) begins his family vacation by picking up his SUV from the dealer and finding out he now has a "hip-hop mobile" complete with hydraulics and rapper wheels. His son, (Lil' Bow Wow), now of course thinks of his dad as cool. Estranged from his wife (Vanessa Williams), Nate has convinced her to take a ride to his family reunion along with his teenage boy-crazy daughter (Solange Knowles) and his youngest child (Gabby Soleil). All kinds of funny things happen along the road and family issues begin to come to a head. The reunion is hilarious with Nate and his brother (Steve Harvey) competing for their mother's attention....let the competitions begin! Cedric the Entertainer is very funny in his role as the nerdy insurance selling dad; he is a gifted performer and has the chance to show off all his stuff in this role. Vanessa Williams is still beautiful and amazingly good as the serious Johnson mom. Lil Bow Wow shows he is not all hip-hop in his role as the Johnson son. Solange Knowles is perfectly cast as the teenage Johnson daughter with an eye for the boys. And how sweet is little Gabby Soleil as the youngest Johnson. Of course Steve Harvey cannot be denied as the competitive Johnson brother. The best part of this movie is the talent contest at the reunion where we get to see Cedric in all his glory and Harvey doing a "Miss Jackson" routine! This movie is light-hearted and entertaining for the whole family with a heartwarming ending of course so sit back and let the Johnson's do the driving. Was this review helpful to you? The good points: 1) Although Cedric the Entertainer's "Nate Johnson" is estranged from wife "Dorothy" (Vanessa Williams), the couple has reconciled somewhat to take their kids to the annual family reunion. This provides for one of the few times that a "nuclear" black family is represented in film. 2) A killer soundtrack of "old school" favorites enhances the on-screen happenings. 3) Location scenes add to the "realism" of the family's journey. 4) Native Americans are portrayed as savvy entrepreneurs that "humor" the unenlightened tourist. 5) This is not a bad, first-time effort for director Christopher Erkin. The minuses: 1) Some of the vignettes are derivative of other films of the genre, especially the Chevy Chase movies. 2) Nate's daughter "Nikki" (Solange Knowles) perpetuates the stereotype of the oversexed teen nymphet. 3. Bow Wow, definitely not playing against type, is Nate's son, "D.J.", a wannabe-rapper. 4. Jokes are made at the expense of "big-boned" women, continuing the tradition of laughing at FAT folks. 5. A rather disgusting scene involving a bodily function and a drink cup. Even though, they're evenly separated, the "strengths" of the pluses makes this film mildly recommended. It shows how competition, distance, support and the urge to stay connected affects the family. This movie also shows how all races have stereotypes of other races and also of different class structures within the race. The story is told in a humorous way including musical selections. The theme of the movie is family is the nucleus of society and can remain strong through any obstacle. The movie stars Cedric the Entertainer as Nate Johnson who is married to Vanessa Williams. The have two daughters and one son played by Bow Wow. Nate Johnson is a successful insurance company employee living in suburban area of California. His wife is going back to school to become a CPA which has caused them to separate due to Nate's inability to support his wife's dreams. So he moves around the corner from their home. Steve Harvey plays Mack Johnson, Nate's older brother. He is married with one daughter and one son. He still lives in Caruthersville, Missouri their hometown. Competition between the brothers still is ongoing to gain their mother's affection. The family reunion is coming up and the bragging begins on which of the brothers families will win the "Family of the Year" trophy. Most of the movie is the travel Nate and his family take cross country to get to the family reunion in Missouri. Nate's wife agrees to go because it is the youngest daughter's birthday as well. The youngest daughter has created an imaginary friend to deal with the separation of her parents. This is how she is dealing with loss, loss of the family structure. Stereotypes that are portrayed by Nate are his view of rappers that their lifestyle is a waste of time. This is the dream his son has to become a rapper. Also, he thinks Native Americans should be or dress in cultural attire. Society and Nate's perception that a beautiful woman is skinny and that woman should be happy just being a wife and mother. All of his stereotypes change by the end of the movie. Nate and his wife reconciled, the brothers came together, and the daughter no longer needed her imaginary friend all because the family structure survived and still loved each other. I wasn't too sure when i was buying this movie because everyone said it's ****, but after i wached it i know now that it was worth it. Check a variety of vacation travel sites. Rates to London change frequently, and it's important to understand the price range before you purchase your vacation airfare and hotel stay. The airport code for Heathrow Airport in London, England is LHR. Tip: Keep in mind that midweek vacation departures to London and returns are cheaper than weekend ones. As you fare-search, you'll find that the online travel agents don't all return the same flight choices but they do provide a good idea of what's available to London. Before you click a "Buy" button, also check the dedicated site of the airline you prefer to fly on your vacation. 2. Study London Maps . London was not designed to flummox tourists, but it can confuse first-timers on vacation. Before you go, check out London maps online to acquaint yourself with the various areas of the city and where the major attractions are located. Once in London, don't travel without a map. Tip: Don't waste money or vacation time buying a London map if your hotel can supply one free. You can also pick up maps and other free tourist information at the Britain Visitor Centre, 1 Regent Street, Piccadilly Circus. Tip: If you ever get lost in London, hire a taxi. Drivers study for years to learn every nook and cranny of the system, and it's a matter of pride for one to safely deliver you to your destination. London Tube and double-decker buses that run frequently are, of course, more inexpensive ways to get around on your vacation. 3. Choose a London Hotel in the "Right" Neighborhood. What's your passion? If the monarchy, tradition, and parliamentary system of England fascinate you, select a hotel in Westminster close to Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, and the Houses of Parliament. Hope to see plenty of theater on your London vacation? Find a hotel close to Covent Garden . Are you fashion-focused? Then a Kensington or Knightsbridge hotel nearby Harrods, Harvey Nichols, and the Victoria & Albert decorative arts museum can turn your London vacation into a shopping spree. The best way to see all that London offers is to take a tour on one of its double-decker, open-air, sightseeing buses soon after you arrive on vacation. There are two competing companies in London: The Original Tour and The Big Bus Company . Both have stops all over the city. A ticket is good for 24 hours and unlimited hops on and off the bus are permitted in that period. Both companies also offer River Thames cruises, which are included in the ticket price. Tip: Tour buses operate in one direction. If you're using one for transportation, understand that it may take up to three hours to reach an attraction on the other side of London. 4. Hit the London Museums . London features some of the world's finest museums and it would be a shame to vacation here without visiting a few. The biggest and the best are free to enter. Tops on my list are: The Victoria & Albert Museum, National Gallery, and the British Museum. The Imperial War Museum's Cabinet War Rooms (fee) show you the actual London quarters where Winston Churchill led England through World War II. Tip: Museum shops are great places to find gifts and souvenirs. Best buys include "mummy" cases from the British Museum, bone china from Buckingham Palace, and jewelry and art books from the Victoria & Albert Museum. 5. Pay Half Price for London Theatre Tickets. Tickets are available for a wide selection of West End shows on the day of performance at the Leicester Square TKTS ticket booth. While there are a number of competitors, this is the only official seller. Expect to pay exactly half price plus a 2.50 £ fee. Keep in mind that most theatres are dark on Sunday nights. Tip: Buy a copy of Time Out London to see what's going on during your vacation. Its calendar of events is extensive, and its theatre listings can help you make a choice you'll be happy with. 6. Organize Your Vacation in London. If you want to pack a lot of sight-seeing into a few days, plan an itinerary ahead of time. Use a map to locate attractions, and see those in proximity to one another instead of spending time racing all over London. Certainly allow time to stroll London's beautiful parks and gardens and linger over a pint at one of her many pubs on your vacation. This is a great, confusing, fascinating, crammed, funny country, full of contradictions - not least of which is the mix of ultra high technology with ancient traditions. There are few great 'big' sights, but lots of terrific little sights, from exquisite elevator ladies in department stores to leather-clad rockers in Yoyogi park to funky old wooden restaurants [Akachochin/red lantern] to weird capsule hotels... It's so safe that you'd have to pay someone to mug you , and teach them how to do it, though the current youth attitude is not looking good. The food is superb, varied and not necessarily expensive. Traditional hotels [Ryokan] are relatively cheap and interesting. Domestic travel systems are superb. Try the bullet train if you can afford it. Downside: - It's sometimes expensive, crowded and hectic. - There are plenty of dull, endless suburbs, hideous overhead powercables, concrete, concrete. - Quaint trad clothing like kimonos are rarely seen outside ceremonial occasions. - It's not tourist oriented , so comprehensible signs can be rare and ATMs often don't like foreign credit cards. Where to travel in Japan: 1] ***Tokyo. A huge, busy city with lots of action, big and little. See the Imperial Palace, Asakusa area, Ginza area, Yoyogi park on a Sunday afternoon, Shinkuku at night, Roppongi at night, Shibuya love hotels, Sumo wrestling, Kabuki [at Kabuki-za, Ginza?], Hama Rikyu Japanese garden. Tokyo National Museum? Disneyland? Little known factoid: the set designer for Blade Runner was inspired by Shinjuku. 2] **Nikko. A recreation area, with a sensational temple, a waterfall and some lovely walks. 2hrs by train from Tokyo. 3] *Hakone. Another favourite mountainous, rec and hot spring area, esp. in the autumn, with great views and a superb futuristic museum. 1.5hrs train travel from Tokyo. 4] ***Kyoto/Nara. Hundreds of elaborate temples, buddhas and zen gardens, tho' central Kyoto has the usual urban sprawl apart from the Imperial Palace. Also see a tea ceremony, Geisha, Katsura Imperial Villa [& gardens] and Himeji castle nearby. 5] *Hida-no Takayama. Very old, traditional, rustic town[aka Little Kyoto]. 6] *Nagasaki. A museum and park dedicated to the A-bomb, a fine recreation of old European homes in the south and a full-scale, lived in Dutch town in the north. 7] Hiroshima. The first bomb site, also with an excellent museum and park and Japan's #1 sight [according to locals], the 'floating' Itsuku Shima Shrine, in Miyajima, not far away. 8] Yokohama, Osaka, Kyushu, Hokkaido, Okinawa. Not worth travelling there unless it's for a festival or some special interest or you have lots of time.
