Astronaut Hall of Fame Kennedy Space Center Seaworld Universal Studios Islands of Adventure Disney's Animal Kingdom The theme parks had several kinds of shows. Most of them about 20 minutes long: 4D Movies These are similar to ordinary movies, but often in 3D. They may include some anamatronic figures around the movie theatre, perhaps a few live performers, smoke, light, flame, water spray, and smell effects, trick seats that prod you in the back or bounce around, etc. Examples include "Terminator 2-3D" at Universal Studios, or "Its Tough to Be a Bug" at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Highly recommended. Simulator Rides These are again mostly film, but you aren't sitting in a regular movie theatre seat. Instead, you sit in a simulator that can tilt up, down, left, and right. When combined with the movies, you think you're really moving. Some examples of simulator rides are the "Back to the Future" ride at Universal, and the "Polar Exploration" ride at Seaworld. Tracked rides In these rides, you are strapped into a car that rides around the show on a track. Things jump out at you, the car spins around, etc. Some also include 3D (like Spider Man), or the ability to shoot back at bad guys (like Men in Black). Others are in water instead of land (like the Jaws tour boat). Another example is the ET the Extraterrestrial ride. The "earthquake" ride at Universal is a cross between this and a simulator. They put you in a subway car, which is really a simulator mounted on tracks. It takes you a short distance down the track to a different stage (although with lighting, sound, and wind effects if feels like you went a lot farther). There the simulator rocks and rolls while the subway suffers an 8.0 earthquake. Real Rides These are the various roller coasters, and other similar rides. Cool coasters are the Twin Dragons and the Hulk at Islands of Adventure, and "kraken" at Seaworld. A variant of these is the "water coasters" where you sit in a boat that goes through artificial river rapids, falls, etc. On these you'll always get soaked (so I didn't try them out). Examples are the Jurassic Park ride and the Popeye ride at Islands of Adventure. Another variant is the "jungle safari" ride at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Here they put you on real 4 wheel drive vehicles, and take you through the Africa part of the zoo, lions, elephants, giraffes, etc. Walkthroughs These are shows where you walk through the stages. Normally there's several separate rooms. You walk into one, get a bit of the show there, then go to the next room, get some more show, etc. Examples of this are the "Twister" show at Universal Studios (where you walk through a town that is experiencing a "twister"), the "Poseiden" show at Islands of Adventure, and the simulated Saturn V launch at the Kennedy Space Centre Apollo exhibit.All of these were great. Live Stage Shows These are typical live shows, sometimes including animals. Some of thecool ones were the "Animal Planet Live" and "Wild Wild Wild Wild West" shows at Universal Studios, the "Pirate Adventure" and "Shamu" shows at Seaworld, and "The Lion King" at Disney's Animal Kingdom.

So Mom, Dad and the kids can enjoy the G-rated attractions in Vegas. Q: Where can I safely drop off my young children in Vegas while I gamble away their college fund? A: Hey, we would never recommend dropping off kids anywhere or gambling away their college fund, especially when there are a number of attractions for the whole family in Vegas, including GameWorks and Circus Circus' Adventuredome . Kids can kill a lot of hours at these places (and considering the prices of some new games, they might kill their own college fund). You also can spend a relaxing hour taking in the IMAX movies at the Luxor. If you do want to gamble, though, there are a handful of hotels that offer child-care facilities on property. Q: My sister and husband are coming to Vegas with their 1-year-old. Will we be allowed in the casinos? Where can I take them? We want to show them at least one casino, but we have baby considerations, such as feeding, napping, strollers, etc. What can you recommend? A: They'll be allowed to bring the baby into the casino if they're just passing through (to get to a restaurant, shopping, etc.) But babies and blackjack don't mix, so don't plan to sit down with a toddler at the tables. Also, the Bellagio does not allow children inside unless they're registered hotel guests, attending a show or dining with the family at one of the restaurants. Take it from us, the best places to take a baby would be shopping or to the many attractions Vegas offers. Try the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay (kids under 4 are free), the Forum Shops at Caesars or gardens at the Flamingo with live African penguins, Chilean flamingos, Mandarin ducks and Koi fish. Youngsters will definitely get a kick out of the Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat at the Mirage. Q: We are coming to Vegas with our 8- and 12-year-olds. What is there to do for kids this age that will still be fun for us? A: Vegas may be Sin City, but there are still plenty of things that the whole family can enjoy: magician Lance Burton at the Monte Carlo, " Tournament of Kings " dinner theater at the Excalibur, the World's Largest Permanent Circus at Circus Circus, buffets , hiking at Red Rock Canyon , the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay and the IMAX Theater at the Luxor. If you want to get some shopping done, Caesars offers something for the whole family. Stop and shop at the Forum Shops where the kids can enjoy the Fall of Atlantis and Festival Fountain shows and aquarium . Some kids also enjoy seeing the Hoover Dam . Q: What is the best hotel to stay in with our kids? A: Location rules in this category. Check out New York-New York for its Manhattan Express roller coaster , Excalibur ( Merlin's Magic Motion Machines and Fantasy Faire midway),Luxor ( IMAX Theater , arcade), Mandalay Bay ( Shark Reef ) and finally Circus Circus , which has the most kid-centric activities per square foot. Q: What is the best free stuff to do with our kids in Vegas? A: There are so many free attractions in Vegas, it's hard to know where to begin. First, you have the sheer wonder of just wandering around the Strip. There also are the gardens at the Flamingo , the erupting Mirage volcano , the Fountains at Bellagio , the "Masquerade Show in the Sky" in the Masquerade Village at the Rio and the high-flying Circus acts at Circus Circus. You also won't want to miss M&M's World at the Showcase Mall, Mount Charleston , MGM Grand Lion Habitat , Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat (kids under 10 free) and White Tiger Habitat at the Mirage. Staying healthy can make or break any trip, so read on to get some preparatory information about the regions health challenges. Enjoying your trip to its fullest always involves some amount of preparation and knowledge, so to make your planning easier weve put together some basic information outlining the general risks you might face in Central America. Consult the World Health Organization (WHO) or the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for the most up-to-date information on current health risks, and ask your physician about the best courses of vaccinations and malaria prophylaxis for the area youre visiting. Food and Water: Stick with bottled or purified water, and only eat cooked vegetables and peeled fruit, as well as well-cooked meat and seafood--these simple rules can easily be the key to staying healthy during your vacation in Central America. Except in the most established and hygienic of restaurants, ceviche, a regional specialty of raw seafood salad, should be avoided, especially if it has any shellfish in it. Milk is not pasteurized in Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras, so avoid all dairy products. If youre really craving some milk, mix powdered or tinned milk with purified water as a safe alternative. The Elements: When youre in the tropics, youre in prime sunshine territory. Clearly this is a plus for all us sun-worshipping folk, but its important to protect yourself from damaging UV rays. Apply lots of sunscreen throughout the day, try to limit your exposure to the sun when you can, and wear protective clothing. Also, be sure to drink lots of water to stave off dehydration. Drink up even when youre not thirsty, and especially if youre engaging in outdoors activities. Combined with the intensity of the sun, even mild dehydration can really put an unpleasant tinge on your experience. Altitude Sickness: If youre planning on doing some trekking in the mountains or on volcanoes, be prepared for some possible bouts of altitude sickness--something that cannot be prevented, but can definitely be alleviated quite easily. Health Risks: Costa Rica and Panama generally present few risks (other than those pertaining to food and water) if you stick to the big cities, beaches, and main tourist spots. However, these countries rural areas--as well as other surrounding countries--contain maladies that you should know about. Malaria is a year-round risk in Belize, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, and Panama--with the exception of urban areas. If you plan on venturing outside of the cities, consult your doctor several months before your departure to determine the best course of malaria medication for you. Dengue fever has been reported in the above countries, so arm yourself against mosquitoes with strong insect repellent. Rabies is widespread throughout Central America, so abstain from provoking stray dogs or other animals in the wild. If you get bitten, seek medical help immediately. Fluke illnesses (from bacteria transmitted in food), Chagas disease, leptospirosis, and lesihmaniasis have been reported in rural foci throughout the region. Schistosomiasis (bilharzia) occurs in some freshwater sources, so avoid swimming and paddling in freshwater whenever possible (for more information on this matter, read our Take Me to the River tip).
