This is a great, confusing, fascinating, crammed, funny country, full of contradictions - not least of which is the mix of ultra high technology with ancient traditions. There are few great 'big' sights, but lots of terrific little sights, from exquisite elevator ladies in department stores to leather-clad rockers in Yoyogi park to funky old wooden restaurants [Akachochin/red lantern] to weird capsule hotels... It's so safe that you'd have to pay someone to mug you , and teach them how to do it, though the current youth attitude is not looking good. The food is superb, varied and not necessarily expensive. Traditional hotels [Ryokan] are relatively cheap and interesting. Domestic travel systems are superb. Try the bullet train if you can afford it. Downside: - It's sometimes expensive, crowded and hectic. - There are plenty of dull, endless suburbs, hideous overhead powercables, concrete, concrete. - Quaint trad clothing like kimonos are rarely seen outside ceremonial occasions. - It's not tourist oriented , so comprehensible signs can be rare and ATMs often don't like foreign credit cards. Where to travel in Japan: 1] ***Tokyo. A huge, busy city with lots of action, big and little. See the Imperial Palace, Asakusa area, Ginza area, Yoyogi park on a Sunday afternoon, Shinkuku at night, Roppongi at night, Shibuya love hotels, Sumo wrestling, Kabuki [at Kabuki-za, Ginza?], Hama Rikyu Japanese garden. Tokyo National Museum? Disneyland? Little known factoid: the set designer for Blade Runner was inspired by Shinjuku. 2] **Nikko. A recreation area, with a sensational temple, a waterfall and some lovely walks. 2hrs by train from Tokyo. 3] *Hakone. Another favourite mountainous, rec and hot spring area, esp. in the autumn, with great views and a superb futuristic museum. 1.5hrs train travel from Tokyo. 4] ***Kyoto/Nara. Hundreds of elaborate temples, buddhas and zen gardens, tho' central Kyoto has the usual urban sprawl apart from the Imperial Palace. Also see a tea ceremony, Geisha, Katsura Imperial Villa [& gardens] and Himeji castle nearby. 5] *Hida-no Takayama. Very old, traditional, rustic town[aka Little Kyoto]. 6] *Nagasaki. A museum and park dedicated to the A-bomb, a fine recreation of old European homes in the south and a full-scale, lived in Dutch town in the north. 7] Hiroshima. The first bomb site, also with an excellent museum and park and Japan's #1 sight [according to locals], the 'floating' Itsuku Shima Shrine, in Miyajima, not far away. 8] Yokohama, Osaka, Kyushu, Hokkaido, Okinawa. Not worth travelling there unless it's for a festival or some special interest or you have lots of time. Visit a 2000 year old Roman aqueduct, a fairytale castle, a 14th century cathedral and more in this Spanish city 90 km north of Madrid.
A compact town of fewer than 60,000 people, Segovia's charm lies in its setting, its variety of architecture, and its people. It's two hours by scenic train, an hour and a half by bus from Madrid.
Segovia Sights: The Aqueduct
Start your tour of Segovia at the Plaza of the Aqueduct. You'll end up near here if you take either the bus or train. You won't miss this tourist favorite, probably built around the latter half of the first century by Trajan, it's near 30 feet high at its highest point and passes smack through the center of town. It's still in use as a secondary water supply for Segovia and is one of the best-preserved Roman building projects anywhere. Find more about the Aqueduct and its history

The Alcazar of Segovia
Thought to have been built in the late eleventh at the confluence of Segovia's two rivers Eresma and Clamores, this fairytale castle was severely damaged by fire in 1862 but was restored later, and perhaps embellished a bit. (Disney was thought to have copied it, but then he's been thought to have copied many castles in Europe.) This site was probably a fortress from at least Roman times; excavations have revealed granite blocks like the Romans used for the aqueduct in the Alcazar region.
It's still a great place to see and see the countryside from. The museum inside will tell you something about life in the era.
The Cathedral
The first Cathedral in Segovia was out near the Alcazar. Bad choice if you want your cathedral to be safe from the ravages of war. The new one is in the Plaza Major, and dates from 1525, when Architect Juan Gil de Ontañon, responsible also for the Cathedral at Salamanca, started work on it. Ontañon couldn't finish in his lifetime, and the work was carried on by several men until its completion in 1615.

You might be surprised at how affordable a spa visit is in this town whose name is "bath-bath"--we'll tell you how just about anyone can get the treatment . Location of Baden Baden Baden Baden is 60 km northeast of Strasbourg, France in the Black Forest region of Germany, in the German state of Baden-Wurttemberg. Besides Strasbourg, other close by, worthwhile cities to visit are Freiberg, Baden Wurttemberg, Rothenberg, Hiledelberg and perhaps Stuttgart for the Porsche museum or a Factory Tour (the factory is actually in Zuffenhausen, a few miles north of Stuttgart.) How to reach Baden Baden By Train - The Baden Baden train station is a stop for high speed and regional trains. The main lines are Basel (Switzerland)/Hamburg, Basel/Rhineland, Basel/Berlin and Paris/Vienna via Stuttgart and Munich. By Car - Motorway A5 Basle to Frankfurt, A8 when traveling from Munich to Karlsruhe, Federal Highway B3 Kiel/Basle, B500 in France / Black Forest / Switzerland Motorway Exit "Baden-Baden." By Plane - Baden Airpark is 15 km out of the city. There is a daily flight to/from Berlin Templehof as well as charter flights by Eurowings, Hapag Lloyd, Hamburg International, Air Europa, Sun Express. You can take a train from larger airports at Frankfurt, Karlsruhe, and Basel (Switzerland). Airport Shuttle - You can book a seat on a small bus from international Airports at Frankfurt, Stuttgart, and Strasburg, France for 135 Euros round trip. Baden Baden Hotels An oft recommended hotel in Baden Baden that isn't too expensive and is centrally located next to the opera house is the Schweizer Hof , Lange Str. 73, 76530 Baden-Baden. For you luxury buffs, the only place to go to mingle with the rich and famous is the Brenner's Park Hotel and Spa . Heidi Klum loved it. Kelby Carr, your France for Visitors guide, recommends the Hotel Beeg , on Gernsbacher Straße 44-46. which "had all the necessities, nice bed, a small armchair, TV, etc. The best feature was definitely the location, though. You could walk out the front door, walk along a sidewalk and be at the Caracalla spa." (The Hotel Beeg sounds nice, but I usually go for something smaller.) Find these hotels in our Baden-Baden Links. Spas Spas have been famous at Baden Baden since the Roman Era. The two big spas, Caracalla and the Roman-Irish spa, are quite affordable. A three hour visit to Caracalla will cost you 13 Euro, 10 three hour visits will cost you 113 Euros. A single admission ticket excluding soap and brush massage (3 hours) at the Roman-Irish Spa will run you 21 Euros, a three and a half hour visit including soap and brush massage will cost you 29 Euros. At either spa you can park nearby for two hours free, then for a Euro per hour thereafter. The Baden Wine Route will lead you and your car through the best of the region, while the Ortenau Weinpfad (wine trail) running parallel has over 100 kilomters of hiking trails and vantage points. For more on these opportunities, follow the Baden Wine Route link in the box on the right Cuisine There is, of course, the famous Black Forest smoked ham, and the locally made Gansewurst, a sausage made from smoked goose, is worth a try. Lunch is light, there's a coffee and cake break in the afternoon, then a late dinner. Some of the food has French influence here, and the local black forest game is legendary.
