I do not claim to be an expert, but I do know what I am looking for in a travel guide. The Mexico guide is a good, complete guide. Filled with information, history and beautiful pictures about almost every corner of this gorgeous country. Reading the whole book gives you a good update on your history and geography knowledge! (Something to do if you are trekking around by bus like I did!) I have always been satisfied with the LP guides. The information given is good, just what you need to get around. The only negative with this book (and the reason I give it 4 and not 5 stars) is that it was completely outdated on prices etc. Another thing (that goes for most of the travel guides) is that many of the hotels that are listed in the book has gotten so much (too much?) business so that the service is down to a minimum. This we found especially in Isla Mujeres where the price was the double of what the book said, and really lousy customer service, if any. Was this review helpful to you? I just got back from three week road trip driving from Mexico City to Huatulco and back. I brought three books with me: a borrowed copy of LP Mexico, my out-dated copy of Joe Cumming's Mexico Handbook (Avalon / Moon), and Bruce Whipperman's Oaxaca Handbook (Avalon / Moon)... The trip reconfirmed what I have always said about LP: they are over-used, under-researched, and too many people rely on them as if to travel without LP is a sacrilege. Some LP titles might be very good, but LP is now a huge multi-million dollar publishing house with hundreds of titles, not all of which are of equal quality. This is not to say that Avolon's huge, 2 inch thick super Mexico handbook is great either. There is too much brevity in the Mexico Country Handbook... too much editing and cutting. For Mexico I have come to the conclusion that you cannot write a 5 star guidebook and try to cover the whole country. There is simply too much to cover in one book. I live in San Diego and so I appreciate the other reviewer's comment that not including Puerto Nuevo and Rosarito in the LP book is a MAJOR oversight. The best book by far was Bruce Whipperman's Oaxaca book: it was incredibly detailed, covered the entire state, and left practically no stone unturned. I have some criticisms of that book as well (see my review), but if you are going to Mexico, unless you plan on covering the entire country, buy Avalon's Moon Handbooks for specific regions (Oaxaca, Pacific Coast, Mexico City, etc). They are much more accurate, newer, and more complete in terms of the number of attractions covered and the details about each one. Lonely Planet specializes in cheap sleeps (budget hotels & travel hostels), affordable meals, and local customs. There's solid coverage of major attractions, plus off-the-beaten-path ideas for those wishing to skirt the tourist haunts. I particularly liked the vital information on getting to and from airports, city centers, bus and train stations, plus using local busses and the subway in Mexico City. The information in Lonely Planet guides is clear, concise and direct - perfect for travelers needing vital knowledge at their fingertips. This 9th (2004) edition is very good, yet has two weaknesses. First, Mexico is too big for any travel guide to list every pueblo, motel, mountain, beach and sight - even in a large (1,028 pages) yet compact book. Second, places and prices can change, so travelers need to beware. Still, this is an excellent travel guide - visit Mexico and you'll probably see others carrying this book. I've found places that I didn't know that existed, it has not let me down. The maps are accurate and the recommendations always are correct. Sometimes a virulent virus can create enough ripples of panic in passengers that travel plans are changed or canceled, and airlines suffer as people stop flying or stay closer to home. SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) is proving to be an example of a virus that is steering passengers away from flying to certain regions of the world. Part of the reason that SARS is so potentially devastating to certain sectors of air travel is the fact that it remains ill-understood. Could you catch it from a fellow passenger? How easily transmittable is it? How long can the virus survive airborne, or on objects that have been used by someone infected by SARS? As world health authorities grapple with trying to find concrete answers to such questions, less passengers are willing to risk their well-being (and potentially their lives) over a virus that seems to be reaching different countries by infected passengers traveling via international flights. Not knowing all that there is to know about SARS has led to thousands of canceled bookings as many companies and individuals are heeding the advice to not travel to certain parts of the world unless absolutely necessary. Some airlines have had employees invoke work refusals as the fear of contracting the virus, and its rapid worldwide spread are realized. The lake has frozen over and the timber wolves are starting to roam about on the ice. Firewood is stacked by each cabin for a warm toasty evening while you are curled up with a favorite book. The deer have started to come in for their winter handouts and we have about a ton of corn stored, as we plan ahead. The crosscountry ski trails are all open and groomed. The trail groomer is out nearly every day setting tracks and keeping everything perfect for excellent skiing. The sled dogs have arrived for the winter and the mushers have them out on the trails every day getting them in shape for trail rides. Guests that came up on our decorating weekends did a bang up job on the lodge and grounds-- the Christmas trees are up and decorated, garlands hang everywhere around the lodge and on the outside light poles, and strings of white lights illuminate the outside of the lodge come evening. Our chef has an all new winter menu that has some very tasty selections. He is featuring more entrees of the country. Among his new choices are an Elk steak, a big double bone pork chop, new walleye recipes, new pasta selections, new salads, and new breads and desserts. So we opened an Adventure Concierge office to help you plan your activities during your stay. This person will be available to make recommendations on which ski trails to go on depending on your skill level, which days might be better for snowshoeing, or even booking any popular activities for you before you arrive. Winter Specials Everyone loves a deal so here is our best winter offer. If you're the kind of person who always wants a vacation to last just one more day, we can relate! If you arrive on a Sunday or Monday and spend 3 nights with us, the fourth night is on the house. Dog Sledding For guests staying over Monday throughout the winter we are treating you to a taste of dog sledding by offering you complimentary dog sled rides. Bundle up and hop in the sled, and let our musher and team of eager sled dogs introduce you to an exciting way to traverse the snow-covered trails that wind through the woods. This is always popular so reservations are a must! The complimentary dog sled rides are for guests spending Sunday and Monday nights at Gunflint. While we do reserve the whole day for rides, there is limited capacity. Sleigh Rides For guests staying over Tuesday we will be offering complimentary sleigh rides every Tuesday evening. Big Belgian horses pull the sleigh through the woods and alongside a frozen lake on lit trails beneath a star-filled sky. Homemade hot cocoa awaits you upon your return from this classic north woods experience. Just to be clear, the complimentary sleigh rides are for guests spending Monday and Tuesday nights at Gunflint. This activity is particularly limited in capacity due to size of the sleighs and can only hold 12 people. So it is open to the first 12 people who sign up. If you are interested in reserving a sleigh ride for a different night of the week, call us and we can arrange it for you.
