Founded 300 years ago by Peter the Great as a port city on the Baltic Sea, the city was the seat of the tsars until Nicolas II was dethroned in 1917. Located in the northwest corner of Russia (get a map of Russia) (bordering on Finland, several hundred miles northwest of Moscow, St. Petersburg is a traveler’s delight, famous for its summertime White Nights, its famous old city section, beautiful buildings on the banks of the Neva River, and its many churches, museums, gardens, theaters and activities. St. Petersburg is home to the State Hermitage Museum, the Mariinsky Opera and Ballet Theater, St. Isaac’s Cathedral, and the palace of Peter the Great. The city hosts annual art exhibits and music and film festivals, including the Viva Russian Cinema festival. This period is the busiest travel season for Japanese people in the year. Many people are off work from the last weekend of December to the first weekend of January. It's hard to make reservations for transportations and accommodations during this time, so please plan ahead. Traveling around Christmas Day in Japan isn't as bad as in western countries. One thing to remember is that Christmas Eve has become a night for young lovers to go out and spend a romantic time together at fancy restaurants or hotels in Japan. It is almost impossible to make reservations for a restaurant or hotel at the last minute on this day. Also, Christmas is not a Japanese national holiday . Unless it is Sunday, businesses and schools are open on the day. Also, remember that December 23 is a Japanese national holiday, Heisei Emperor's Birthday. New Year's holidays are very important for Japanese people. People usually spend New Year's Eve rather quietly with the family. Most of businesses are closed from the 29th or 30th of December to 3rd or 4th of January, depending on the kind of business and day of week. Be aware that banks and hospitals are closed around this time of the year. Check their operation dates before the holidays begin. In recent years, many restaurants, convenience stores, supermarkets, and department stores are open during holidays. Since many people traveling out of Tokyo during this time, Tokyo is rather quiet than usual, except temples, shrines, and markets. It might be a good choice to stay in Tokyo during this time. You may get good deals for nice hotels. Hot springs and ski resorts throughout Japan are crowded by many visitors. You need to make reservation early to stay at those areas. That's the message of this article from the Christian Science Monitor . Already a coast to coast flight can be had for as little as $180.00 with 14 days advance purchase. A close reading of the situation leaves me with a few concerns, however. First, if the consolidation of hubs and routes occurs this will leadto fewer seats in the air. This means less capacity to bring the hugecrowds to Orlando and Anaheim during the peak vacation seasons.Vacation Destinations had better be looking at alternate ways to getguests to the gates, more dependance on the international and localmarkets, or plan for flatter attendance patterns. Second, less capacity often results in increased demand. After thecurrent shakeout settles down expect to see a corresponding rise inprices, even on the low cost carriers, until some excess capacity isbuilt back into the system. Also expect there to be less flexibility inwhen and where you travel. The days of non-stop to your destination arewaning and the days of two-to-three hour layovers are once again uponus. Personally, the low cost airlines have worked just fine for me in mycoast to coast travel. I can usually find affordable non-stop flights.But they are less efficient going south to north on the west coast.What should be a 2 hour flight turns into a 5 hour ordeal with layovers and a trip on a commuter plane. I don't see the country becoming any less dependant on air travelanytime soon (and neither do the mega-vacation destinations like Las Vegas which keeps building new hotels). High Speed Rail is still a very expensive alternativeand, so far, impractical when large elevation changes exist. Gas pricesand time make driving much more than 6-8 hours in any direction lessefficient than flying and renting a car. Finally, there is one technology that might shift the balance oftravel. The radius at which it becomes less expensive to fly and rent acar could change dramatically with the wide spread use of fuel cells incars and dual hybrid/plug-n-go configurations. The complete economicramifications of this are left to those with more experience than I,but it will make the next five to ten years interesting to watch.
