Most people get the month of August off in France, meaning you may find some shops are closed. Still, attractions are usually open and it can be a bit quieter than the rest of the year. The South of France tends to be quite packed this year, as many northerners head to the beaches. There is a festive, summer-vacation spirit here, and there are many festivals. Depending on your destination, the weather can be a bit too balmy, but it is surprisingly moderate in most of France. Weather The weather can be a bit extreme in August. There are major variations in climate depending on where you are in France, but here are some major cities: Paris : Average high temperature is 24 degrees celsius/75 degrees farenheit, and the average low is 13.9 celcius, 57 farenheit. Average rainfall is 55.2 millimeters, or 2.2 inches. Nice : Average high temperature is 26.7 degrees celsius/80 degrees farenheit, with the average low at 20 degrees celcius/68 degrees farenheit. Average rainfall is 31.6 millimeters, or 1.2 inches. Bordeaux : Average high temperature is 26.1 degrees celsius, 79 degrees farenheit, and the average low is 15 celcius/59 farenheit. Average rainfall is 59.1 millimeters, or 2.3 inches. Strasbourg : Average high temperature is 24 degrees celsius, or 75 degrees farenheit, and the average low is 14 celcius/55 farenheit. Average rainfall is 70.4 millimeters, or 2.8 inches. What to pack It can be challenging to pack for France, particularly if you will visit multiple cities. For the most part, this is a mild time of year. Be prepared for either hot days or cool nights, however. It's a nice rundown on hip and stylish places that won't cost you as much as a night at the Four Seasons, but for anyone who has traveled to any of The World's Cheapest Destinations , $114 a night for a hotel with a shared bath seems downright warped. Other bargains in the article include a $107 hotel in Paris and a $124 hotel in L.A. with "Moroccan dcor." I won't go into what you can get for that amount of money in Morocco itself. Or how you could get a penthouse suite and all three meals for that price in most of Indonesia. But trust me when I say the price of a "bargain" room in these cities is near the top end of the scale in a few hundred other cities around the globe. I can attest to the fact that anything under $200 a night is definitely a deal in Manhattan, however--I was just there last week. The three of us stayed at Radio City Apartments , right off Times Square. Convenient location, a clean 2-bed room bigger than the one at the W I had last time, a kitchenette, and only $155 a night. (Plus loads of taxes, including a $3 Javitz Center tax. Funny, didn't realize I was there for a convention...) Of course meals cost a bundle, the subway's up to $2, we shared a cab from Newark Airport for $60, my inlaws got two drinks at a hotel bar for $18, going to the top of the Empire State Building is $14, yada yada yada. Before you know it, you've spent an amount of money that would last you weeks in other spots on the globe. But it's a great city, so you suck it up and keep opening the wallet. As New Yorkers will tell you though, the city is not without its deals. My daughter screamed with joy when she saw the carousel in Central Park. It put a big smile on my face too when I saw that it was only $1.25 a ride. Walking through the park was free of course, and beautiful at this time of year, with the leaves still changing colors. Speaking of free, perhaps the greatest bargain of all is the ride on the Staten Island Ferry. We timed it perfectly and saw the city from the water as the sun was going down, then the Statue of Liberty at sunset and when the torch is lit for the evening. I used to live up there and have seen it all before, but it's still magical. Following annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938 and subsequent occupation by the victorious Allies in 1945, Austria's status remained unclear for a decade. A State Treaty signed in 1955 ended the occupation, recognized Austria's independence, and forbade unification with Germany. A constitutional law of that same year declared the country's "perpetual neutrality" as a condition for Soviet military withdrawal. This neutrality, once ingrained as part of the Austrian cultural identity, has been called into question since the Soviet collapse of 1991 and Austria's entry into the European Union in 1995. A prosperous country, Austria entered the European Monetary Union in 1999. Art and Culture Through the centuries, Sicily has been rules by the Greeks, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Swabians and Spanish, who all built cities and changes the people’s habits and traditions each time they were conquered and taken over. Visitors to Sicily’s cities today can still see the ancient Greek-Roman buildings, the easily recognizable Arabic-Norman fortresses, the imposing Baroque style buildings, and the churches with their amazing interiors covered in Byzantine mosaics such as the famous Palatine Chapel in Palermo , and many others too. The Greek-origin cities are mostly on the west side of the island, where we can find Selinunte, Segesta, Siracusa and Agrigento, with its fantastic Valley of Temples. Architecturally speaking, Eastern Sicily is much more influenced by the Sicilian Baroque style, used to build monuments and buildings after the terrible earthquake of 1693. The worst hit area was Val di Noto, which was completely rebuilt at the end of the 17th century. The area includes the cities of Ragusa , Modica , Scicli , Ispica and Noto , wonderful “stone gardens” that are remains of the Sicilian Baroque ear and which are included in UNESCO’S prestigious World Heritage List . The island has some other fabulous towns to visit, such as Taormina , the “pearl of the Ionian Sea”, Enna, “Sicily’s belly button”, Piazza Armerina, Caltagirone “the ceramic town” and Catania , with its Baroque palaces in black and white and its irresistible nightlife. Nature and Relaxation Sicily is fascinating for its thousands of years of history and for its cities of art but also for the countless natural beauties on the island. Nature here changes deeply, from the majestic sight of Etna to the gently sloping hills, full of olive groves, vineyards and citrus fruit groves, from the fine sandy beaches on the Vendicari Reserve , Pozzallo and Isola Bella to the steep cliffs, the amazing Gole dell’Alcantara and the islands, buzzing or quiet, such as Pantelleria, Ustica, Lipari, Stromboli, Favignana, Salina and Panarea. Food and Drink Sicily’s food is similar to its architecture, a meeting point between East and West: this “contamination” from different cultures has produced daring, successful mixes of tastes that make traditional Sicilian cuisine a fascinating, unique experience for the senses. Fish, the main ingredient used, is prepared in a thousand different ways, mixing it with the unusual, strong aromas of herbs and spices such as mint and wild fennel. Sicilian cakes, from cassata to frutta martorana, deserve a special mention, and so does the island’s wines, especially Nero d’Avola, a quality wine that is rapidly becoming famous overseas too.
