One must either walk or take an electric mini-car, such as the one sent from our hotel to ferry us and our luggage a few blocks to our accommodations. We stayed the night in Saas-Fee at the sparkling clean, comfortable and quiet Hotel Schweizerh, whose look is typical Swiss chalet. The rooms are modern and there is swimming pool and a restaurant on site. At the restaurant , guests can take pleasure in a full breakfast buffet each morning. Our meal began with an appetizer of lovely, light pumpkin soup, accompanied by a sliver of savory pumpkin tart. Next came a specialty of the house, chicken roasted in straw. The only thing that rivals the food is the restaurant's setting. It perches above Saas-Fee on a thickly wooded hillside and the terrace offers magnificent scenes of the valley below and the surrounding Alps . The hotel rooms here are also beautifully bedecked and boast the same scenic views. The next morning we were up early to get on the cableway to the top of the mountains. For most of the way, the cable car follows a traditional path, suspended high above the valley below. But about five minutes or so of the trip is through the inside of the mountains, aboard the Metro Alpine, the highest underground cableway in the world. Skiing in Saas-Fee is a year-round sport. After leaving the Ice Pavilion and skipping over the Alps via helicopter, we began our tour of Grimentz, located in a French-speaking area of Switzerland known as Val d'Anniviers. After our walk through Grimentz' Old Town , we drove to a nearby camping and picnic area for a cookout, Swiss-styl e. Our trip of this European region was worth seeing. The construction is glorious, there are plentiful gardens, and it's a pedestrian's heaven. The Hofburg Palace was begun in the 13th century, then expanded and altered for centuries, incorporating numerous architectural styles . Like all good European royalty, the Habsburgs also had their summer palace. An irresistible experience of embellishment. The gardens are very stunning, and well matched to a calm wander. Although the directory of places to visit in Vienna is very long, you certainly don't want to miss Maria Theresa Platz. Flanked on two sides by the matching museums of Fine Art and of Natural History, it's an outstanding place to sit and reflect the beauty of Vienna . Both museums are also value losing you in for a while. As a final touch to the day, the Prater Amusement Park is full of traditional delights . The huge ferris wheel in the centre of the park provides a great view of the city at night, and may provide a sense for those who enjoy spy movies. Several people pass through Vienna in a rush on their whistle stop tour of Europe , and neglect on this city's many beauties and allure. Mention the city of Salzburg , in Austria , and it's amazing how many people burst into their favorite song from “The Sound of Music”. Despite this, Salzburg has another claim to musical fame – it was the birthplace of Mozart. With much of its central city relatively untouched for centuries, Salzburg also offers the chance to see magnificent architecture in abundance. No trip to Salzburg would be complete without a visit to Festung Hohensalzburg – the Hohensalzburg Fortress. This old building dominates the old part of Salzburg , sitting on a hill above the city. You can be lively and walk 15 minutes up the hill to reach it. When you reach the top, if you respire hasn't already been taken away by the walk, it will be when you see the stunning views in so many directions. You can pay to visit the interior of the fortress, which includes a charming look at everything. If you have plans to visit Austria , then make sure you include Salzburg on your route. There is so much to enjoy and esteem, and something to suit everybody's experience. Australia, even though very hot most of the time, has some of the finest slopes during the winter. Europe has the most well- known and visited ski slopes, the Alps. Scandinavia is well, Scandinavia. And then there's the United States that boast with the grandest of slopes in the States of Colorado, Nevada and Utah. Let's not forget the Olympics at Salt Lake City, Utah. Going on a ski vacation is a wonderful experience or as the saying goes - let your hair down and have some fun. Skiing is the greatest thing in the world for people who like being out in the cold. Not only can you enjoy skiing, but also enjoy the sport of snowboarding or snowmobiling. Skiing trips are great destinations for a romantic getaway any time of the year; that is why many travel agencies provide them in their honeymoon packages. It can't get any better when you combine a romantic liaison with skiing. Another activity in which you can take part in during a ski vacation is dog sledding or tobogganing. These are some of the most exhilarating activities in the world. There is nothing like the howling of the dogs and their excitement as they anticipate beginning to run. As soon as they are off there is no sound except their feet hitting the packed snow. Or the thrill of the sliding toboggan as it heads down an icy slope. After all this hard work outdoors in the cold you will definitely want to come inside for some rest and relaxation. Many romantic skiing vacation packages include a warm candle light dinner next to a cozy fire and a warm port for afterwards. Playing all day and relaxing in the evening is a great way to spend vacation time no matter what the occasion. The Internet has numerous sites to help you choose a skiing vacation. The best packages for your dollar are the one's that can book everything for you including your air transportation to and from your vacation site, the lift tickets to the slopes, your accommodations and car rental. You can find companies that can offer an all inclusive package. You might even want to include activities off the slopes such as touring local attractions, getting pampered at the nearest health spa or taking skiing lessons while on vacation. Whatever you choose, purchasing packages that include all you desire will make your vacation easier, more affordable with lots of fun for everyone. You'll find that much of it is spread throughout modern life and as well is a strong basis for many of the other myths that can be found in other cultures. Many centuries ago Greek myths were the only religion for the people living in those times. While passage of time have resulted in blurred images and details, the core elements of all these myths have continued to survive in one form or other. In earlier times it was the Olympians that were prayed to and now these have been replaced by gods. Studies have revealed that Homeric Hymns and Homer are the source of origin of many Greek myths. It is safe to assume that since these were the first writings of Greek myths, they travelled from mouth to mouth and different interpretations may have resulted in some twists and turns before actually putting it down to paper. Therefore, most probably some information is missing from what we read today about the written words of Greeks myths and legends. Even though we know these mythical stories aren't exactly the same as they were originally, they still fascinate us. One of the best known creatures of that era is the Cyclops. It was a horrible looking monster who had only one eye, and it was in the middle of his forehead. There were actually three famous Cyclops: Arges, the lightning bolt, Steropes, lightning itself, and Brontes, was thunder. These Cyclops were sons of Uranus and Gaea (Mother Earth), two more Greek mythological creatures. The god of the skies and first king of the Olympians was Uranus. He and his mother Gaea produced the Titans. In Greek mythology it doesn't matter if mothers and sons produce children. Some historians have trouble dealing with this concept. Prometheus, who was the son of Iapetus, was the wisest, most intelligent of all the Titans. His name means "forethought". Because he was able to see into the future, people revered him. He was also the only Titan to battle with Zeus in a war against Cronus. Cronus was one of the most feared Titans, since he was the one that killed his father, Uranus, to gain power. Cronus married Rhea and together they had several children. However, in an attempt to always retain the power that he had, Cronus ate each of his children while they were being born. Eventually Rhea fooled Cronus into eating a stone instead of one of her children. This child became known as Zeus, who in later years would fight against Cronus with Prometheus, banishing Cronus to the underworld. Another Greek mythological creature is Typhoeus. Typhoeus was a dragon who breathed fire with his one hundred heads. This mythical creature has become the basis for much Greek art and sculpture. Typhoeus was eventually slain by Zeus and his resting place is said to be under Mount Etna. The legends of Greek mythology are endless and will keep you reading for hours. On the other side of the coin there is Roman mythology, which has its own heroes and monsters. Each of these cultures has a fascinating history that is brought to life through these myths and legends, highly influencing art and music to this day . The landscape is just as spectacular as the people are welcoming and cooperative. It was bizarre to be footing on the world's most northerly mainland point and we are now looking forward to a fishing cabin holiday. We've seen the Midnight Sun before, but it's a great experience every time. We have experienced something new and thrilling every day, particularly when we've been onto land and experienced something of the indigenous culture. Hope rise as their move toward to the Troll fjord is announced. A 3 kilometer long, 90 meter wide fjord is a strange experience in a large ship. It doesn't matter that it's raining either: the top deck has glass walls and we're warm and dry in our deckchairs as the whole scene is served to us on a gold platter while we're drinking our afternoon coffee. We sense something beautiful, something stimulating, as if we are part of something much larger in this slim fjord. My trip on a cruise can safely be called the world's most striking voyage. In an interview with a Taiwan newspaper, China's Vice Premier Qian Qichen suggested transport links could be described as "cross-strait" rather than "domestic". Verbal distinctions have played an important role in hostilities between Beijing and Taipei, whose leaders say they are heading a sovereign state, the Republic of China. Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian had rejected the use of the word "domestic", saying it would "belittle, provincialise and marginalise" Taiwan. 'Worth encouraging' Taiwan's Cabinet decided last year that it wanted to restore direct transport to the mainland for the first time in more than 50 years. Direct transport links were severed after the Communist victory in China's civil war in 1949. Two high-ranking Taiwanese officials have welcomed Mr Qian's proposal, though the Cabinet-level Mainland Affairs Council has declined to comment. "The change is worth encouraging," said Chiou I-jen,secretary-general of the National Security Council. He told a parliamentary sub-committee that the shift was a goodwill gesture. "But details need to be discussed by both sides," he added. Taiwan's transport minister, Lin Lin-san, also welcomed the proposal: "I think labelling them as cross-strait routes is a positive concept. It is progress." New policy Taiwan's Cabinet is in the midst of an internal discussion on how to re-open direct transport, trade and postal services and is due to complete its review of the issue by November. Taiwan has already lifted a ceiling on mainland investment by Taiwanese firms and allowed them to invest directly in China rather than via a third country. It has also eased curbs on mainland investment by the sensitive semi-conductor industry, which forms the backbone of Taiwan's economy. In the interview with popular Taiwan paper United Daily News, Mr Qian maintained Beijing's insistence on the need for Taiwan to "recognise 'one China' before we can enter into political negotiations". "But the three links does not need political negotiations, it is an economic issue," he added. "Therefore talks can proceed." DVC Main Page DVC Resales Points Calculator Points Chart Rent/Trade Points Rent/Trade FAQ'S DVC FAQ'S DVC Resorts at WDW Room Reports DVC Discussion DVC Frequently Asked Questions Deciding to join the Disney Vacation Club is a big decision. We all went through it, and we had a thousand questions in the process. One of the goals for this web site was to try and answer as many questions as possible here. The DVC bulletin board is also a great source of information (you can reach that board by selecting BOARDS from the menu bar to the left). What are the benefits of membership? How does the point system work? How do I know how many points to purchase? Can I use my points at other resorts? What if I decide not to keep it? What should I know about buying timeshares through a resale company? Still have Questions? What are the benefits of membership? There are a number of benefits to joining the DVC. First, the value of the points that you purchase will never change. The same value you receive today, will be the same value you receive in 30 years. While the cost of staying at a Disney hotel rises by 5-10% per year, this is a great hedge against inflation. Members also receive discounts at Pleasure Island and Disney Water Parks as well as 10% off merchandise at The Disney Store nationwide. DVC offers discounts for a variety of WDW restaurants, recreational programs and tours. A complete list is provided to members when they check in at their resort. Members also receive a 10% discount on Unlimited Park Hopper passes, that allow unlimited admission to all WDW Theme Parks, Water Parks, Pleasure Island and Disney Quest for every day of your stay. These passes must be purchased at a DVC resort during your stay. You also have the benefit of being able to book at your home resort up to 11 months in advance of your check out date. Your home resort is the resort at which you purchased your interest. Current DVC resorts are Old Key West (OKW), Boardwalk Villas (BWV), Vero Beach (VB), Hilton Head Island (HH), Villas at Wilderness Lodge (VWL), Beach Club Villas (BCV) and Disneys Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa is due to open in May, 2004. You can reserve up to 7 months in advance at any DVC location that is not your home resort. Membership in DVC is included with ownership at a DVC Resort. The program is currently scheduled to end on January 31, 2042- for OKW, BWV, VWL and BCV. After that date, the present resorts will revert back to Disney ownership. Ownership rights may be transferred to others in a will or by a direct sale, after consult with DVC. DVC can add additional resorts in the future which could have a different end date. This has recently occurred with Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa (SSR), where DVC will offer membership until January 31, 2054. All of the discount programs are subject to change and may be modified at any time, but the DVC resorts and their total points may not be changed. Back to top How does the point system work? When you buy into the DVC, you purchase a certain number of points per year. The current price (retail) is $89 per point, for purchases at SSR -with a 150 point minimum for initial purchase and $84 per point for add-ons at the other DVC resorts-with a 25 point minimum for DVC members. Let's say you purchased 200 points. You would be assigned a "use year" (that is the month of the year in which your points would recycle). For example, my use year is February, and I own 200 points. Every February, 200 points are available for me to use that year. When I decide to book my vacation, I choose the dates I want to visit, and the type of room that I want to stay in. That will determine how many points that visit will cost me. I also have the option of banking my points into the next use year, or borrowing points against next year for this year. Which leads to the next question... Back to top How do I know how many points to purchase? This depends on how often you plan to visit Disney World, what size accommodation you would need, and what times of the year you want to visit. The Disney Information Station maintains a DVC Point Calculator and a DVC Point Chart. I suggest that you enter in some sample information, based on what type of vacation habits you have, to find out how many points would be appropriate for you. Many ask if DVC will change the point requirement for a stay at a DVC resort. While the total number of points sold at the resort is a fixed number and cannot be changed, point needs for stays can be changed. However, if points needed for some nights (or room types) are raised, other nights (or room types) must be lowered, as the total points required to stay at the resort for the year cannot be changed. This has occurred only once, in 1996 at OKW, and is likely to happen only if necessary to keep resort utilization in balance for the benefit of DVC members. At that time some nights were raised a few points, some were lowered a few points and most were not changed at all. Back to top Can I use my points at other resorts? The DVC is part of Interval International (a large, worldwide timeshare organization). Your DVC points can be traded for accommodations at many of the Interval Internationals resorts nationwide. You can also use your points to stay at other Disney resorts, as well as the DVC locations at Vero Beach, FL and Hilton Head, SC. and a number of other vacation opportunities such as the Disney Cruise Line and special Adventure programs. Back to top What if I decide not to keep it? You are free to sell your interest in the DVC just as you would any other real estate property. Many people list their DVC properties with companies such as the Timeshare Store, Inc. The Timeshare Store is a licensed Florida real estate company that acts as the broker for the sale and purchase of timeshare interests. You can get more info on The Timeshare Store by visiting their web site at http://www.timesharesale.com and info on their DVC Resales specifically at http://www.dvc-resales.com Back to top What should I know about buying timeshares through a resale company? There are a couple of points you should keep in mind when purchasing resale. First, watch out for companies who want to charge you any up front fees. You should never pay anything until a sale is final. Second, make sure that the resale agent you are dealing with is a licensed real estate agency. This lends a great deal of credibility to that agency, and gives you direct recourse (through the state board of realtors) should anything go wrong. We recommend The Timeshare Store in Orlando, FL. Many people who have visited this site have purchased DVC through them and have had excellent experiences in doing so. Back to top Once a DVC resort is sold out, if I buy through resale, will there be problems trying to book rooms? Disney Vacation Club resorts are busy places, there is no question about that. However, if you plan far enough in advance, you should be able to get the dates you want without much of a problem. Remember, at your home resort, you can reserve up to 11 months in advance of your check out date and 7 months in advance at other DVC resorts. All members have the same benefits and restrictions regardless how they joined the DVC. There is no negative to a membership purchased through resale. Back to top Still have Questions?
