The island is a crossroads for populations who were completely different from one another, who have all left permanent traces of themselves in the island’s culture. Art and Culture Through the centuries, Sicily has been rules by the Greeks, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Swabians and Spanish, who all built cities and changes the people’s habits and traditions each time they were conquered and taken over. Visitors to Sicily’s cities today can still see the ancient Greek-Roman buildings, the easily recognizable Arabic-Norman fortresses, the imposing Baroque style buildings, and the churches with their amazing interiors covered in Byzantine mosaics such as the famous Palatine Chapel in Palermo , and many others too. The Greek-origin cities are mostly on the west side of the island, where we can find Selinunte, Segesta, Siracusa and Agrigento, with its fantastic Valley of Temples. Architecturally speaking, Eastern Sicily is much more influenced by the Sicilian Baroque style, used to build monuments and buildings after the terrible earthquake of 1693. The worst hit area was Val di Noto, which was completely rebuilt at the end of the 17th century. The area includes the cities of Ragusa , Modica , Scicli , Ispica and Noto , wonderful “stone gardens” that are remains of the Sicilian Baroque ear and which are included in UNESCO’S prestigious World Heritage List . The island has some other fabulous towns to visit, such as Taormina , the “pearl of the Ionian Sea”, Enna, “Sicily’s belly button”, Piazza Armerina, Caltagirone “the ceramic town” and Catania , with its Baroque palaces in black and white and its irresistible nightlife. Nature and Relaxation Sicily is fascinating for its thousands of years of history and for its cities of art but also for the countless natural beauties on the island. Nature here changes deeply, from the majestic sight of Etna to the gently sloping hills, full of olive groves, vineyards and citrus fruit groves, from the fine sandy beaches on the Vendicari Reserve , Pozzallo and Isola Bella to the steep cliffs, the amazing Gole dell’Alcantara and the islands, buzzing or quiet, such as Pantelleria, Ustica, Lipari, Stromboli, Favignana, Salina and Panarea. Food and Drink Sicily’s food is similar to its architecture, a meeting point between East and West: this “contamination” from different cultures has produced daring, successful mixes of tastes that make traditional Sicilian cuisine a fascinating, unique experience for the senses. Fish, the main ingredient used, is prepared in a thousand different ways, mixing it with the unusual, strong aromas of herbs and spices such as mint and wild fennel. Sicilian cakes, from cassata to frutta martorana, deserve a special mention, and so does the island’s wines, especially Nero d’Avola, a quality wine that is rapidly becoming famous overseas too. We've found that taking a siesta in the afternoons helps in getting adjusted to the Spanish schedule. Do's and Don'ts Don't be surprised at how rapidly people speak. We found our Spanish skills are severely tested on many occasions. And don't forget to lisp your z's and internal c's. (For example, Ibiza is pronounced Ee-BEETH-a). Don't complain about cigarette smoke in bars—be aware you'll either be laughed at or shown the door. And don't expect to find "No Smoking" sections in restaurants, either. There is no such thing in Spain. Spaniards often tell us that people who complain about such things are "afraid of life". Do carry some small change—you'll need it to use the public bathrooms. Don't wear shorts in churches; wear them only on beaches and at beach resorts. Women may be the object of unwanted attention more than in Northern Europe, particularly if they're traveling alone or visiting Andalusia or the southern Mediterranean coast. The Best response is no response at all—any attention given is likely to be misinterpreted. Do try to see the fastest ball game in the world, pelota (jai alai), played mainly in Bilbao and Guernica. Do be aware that the penalties for drug possession are severe, and convicted offenders can expect jail sentences. Tipping Tipping is a great tradition in Spain. While practically all establishments currently include a surcharge for service it is still common to leave something of a tip. This custom, common in bars and restaurants, has extended to hotel porters, theatre ushers and taxi drivers, though in none of these cases is it obligatory nor will anyone recriminate a client for not tipping. Smoking Smoking is commonplace amongst men and women in Spain, and do not expect to find many non-smoking areas designated in bars and restaurants. Smoking is also common in fast food restaurants, shops and malls. You probably won't get a polite answer if you ask someone to stop smoking a cigarette for whatever reason. For smokers, this will not be a problem, but non-smokers may find this uncomfortable. Cigarettes and cigars are reasonably cheap, and at the moment average about 2€ per packet. St. Gallen History
St. Gallen was founded around 612 AD by a careless monk forging his way through the valley of the river Steinach. Yes, the good but clumsy St. Gallus fell into a briar patch, considered it a sign from God, and, legend has it, built a hermitage there with the help of a bear. The place became St. Gallen, and the bear is still found in the city's standard. From this prickly beginning, St. Gallen developed into a thriving cultural center by the 8th century, and today is Switzerland's seventh largest city.
Getting to St. Gallen
St. Gallen is an hour from Zurich by train. Trains leaving St. Gallen for Zurich also stop at the Zurich airport, which makes it a convenient place to stop in the last leg of a trip when you're flying out of Zurich.

Ok, here's a tip for you. If you like interesting, quirky hotels--boy, do we have one for you. The Hotel Am Ring on Unterer Graben 9, a short walk east from the train station, is crammed with antiques and curiosities throughout. Every one of them has a price tag. Plus, if you choose your room right, you'll see the outside world though a stained glass window. The bathroom fixtures are pretty interesting as well. See the pictures to see what we mean. Rooms 2, 6, and 10 have stained glass windows but face out to the street in front and can be noisy on weekends. A double at the Am Ring goes for a reasonable (for Switzerland) 130 Swiss Francs (CHF) with breakfast (including multicolored boiled eggs), about $90. For a splurge, try the Einstein Hotel, a grand old hotel housed in a former textile factory. Double rooms from 330 - 370 CHF.
St Gallen’s youth hostel is at Jüchstrasse 25 (071/245 47 77, fax 245 49 83; a; open March to mid-Dec) – take the orange Trogenerbahn narrow-gauge train from outside the main station to the Schülerhaus stop and walk up the hill. Dorms are 24 CHF. You can make a reservation online

Attractions - The Cathederal
The present cathedral building was constructed by Peter Thumb between 1755-67. Restoration of the cathederal was done in 1961-1967, in the course of which Josef Wannemacher`s ceiling frescoes were discovered and restored. [see

Attractions - The Abbey Library
is the world's oldest monastic library. The baroque interior filled with ancient tomes and old maps is an awe-inspiring sight, well worth the 7 frank admission fee. You'll have to put on fuzzy felt slippers to protect the floor that'll make you feel like clumsy monk Gallus, but it's all part of the fun. No photos are allowed.
